I love these videos. Today I really liked the part about what you should not expect your 6 yr old to do. That is the kind of information I think is lacking or at least I haven’t found it. As you said we only get a glimpse of your lives. My 6 about to be 7 yr old boy and my five year old girl old are totally different about schooling. He takes something that is a 5 minutes paper and can turn into an hour or more, more days than not. So I like to hear what is possibly “normal” or not for boys or girls or age. What might expect from them at ages. I love everything you put out, but today I felt like you gave me a little more of the stuff I needed👍🏻

Honestly this is so good- I just had this on and I could tell my kids were listening every once in a while. I like when they hear when other families operate similarly to us. Having generally really awesome kids, I sometimes just assume that they know my expectations, so it’s such a good reminder to set them up for success but laying things out ahead of time

I've replayed this about ten times and taken so many notes. I've always had a rough time building character with my boys and helping them to become disciplined. When I married almost three years ago, my husband and I began creating rules for our family family of six. Two of our four boys are gifted with ADHD, and I am also High IQ with ADHD, so things were not going very well in our home. By God's grace and my loving husband's patience, we are finally making progress and this video is like a cherry on top! Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing what works for your family.

Also for a "normal" 7 yr old boy, we put a mini-trampoline next to our homeschool table! We did spelling while jumping etc. :-)

I think so many issues come from unrealistic expectations and starting “traditional learning” at too young an age for too long a time. Littles learn so much through play and us reading to them.

I enjoyed this video. As a homeschool mom and piano teacher, I really appreciate parents that set healthy boundaries for their children. My oldest adult child that was homeschooled needed an abundance of physical activity to be able to concentrate on schoolwork. Even now he runs 10-15 miles early each morning before going to work. This was so good and helpful! One of the best things to happen to me since starting to homeschool after pulling my kids from public school is getting the opportunity to really learn who they are and their personalities! One of my favorite how do I videos so far. Know your child, set expectations and consequences if not met, and FOLLOW THROUGH. Consistency is absolutely key and I feel can be the most difficult and therefore overlooked component! I struggle still, but I look to the Lord for strength and grace as I keep trying!!!

Great video AGAIN. I also want to mention that if you have started to homeschool slightly older children who have been in public school, give them and yourself grace. Many of them have been bullied or picked on by peers and staff or in our case just ignored because they are very quiet. Some kids will have an aversion to or trauma relating to certain subjects and act out. Exactly as you said consistency and GRACE

we have VERY similar styles of approach and handling these things ... I also have sticker reward program where my 7 year old earns 5 stickers (one a day) for a ‘free day’ adventure (unschooling) , or treat or small reward. He gets 3 warnings (strikes) and looses the sticker. I make it hard so that when he looses a sticker he restarts at sticker 1. It works well. He knows he needs to focus , best effort and have positive learning attitude. We start with ‘God’s Truth’ (prayer/biblical time) as a foundation to help remind him before we start.

What have you found is a good amount of time for a break during your school day. Like how long is snack time, how long is free play time and how long is lunch? I have boys and they can be outside for a hour and they never feel like their breaks are long enough.

Yes I decided years ago to always look at my children’s behavior, and decide is it childlike behavior or disobedience, and correct the behavior accordingly.

I feel completely overwhelmed as a homeschool mom in the middle of the Indian ocean away from family and friends. It is our 2nd year but nothing seems to work this year. I am constantly doubting myself. We are doing Grade 0 and Grade 2 ( RSA ). Seyschelles has been in lockdown for most of the year so a lot of the expat families have returned home. I know one or two moms who are doing online school with their kids via the private schools but no other homeschooling families. Homeschooling is a complete different lifestyle and people do not seem to understand that so I rely alot on youtube moms for guidance. Your channel has been a life line! I love the expectations talk. I expect you to act respectful and have a good attitude. Not everything we do in life is going to be fun, but being grumpy or angry does not make it more enjoyable--it makes it worse. We all have bad days and giving our kids grace is important, but they also need to learn in our homes how to function when they have bad days as adults. 💕💕 Way to go!

I believe in preparing my son for the real world, and we have straight-forward, graceful, come-to-Jesus talks ALL the time…lol. Enjoy your videos so much. This last year was my first year homeschooling my 12 year old grandson. Yes I’m old! Lol. I pieced it together but I want to get more precise with my curriculum. We did an online curriculum for Math, LA and reading. The Math and LA worked pretty good especially the Math. I need that extra help in Math since I hate it! Lol. How do you handle their writing or journaling? I feel like I failed at that. I’m planning on doing science and history with the G and the B. Thanks for all your advise.

Would love to see a how you handle kids choosing library books as far as making sure content is ok. There has been a lot of talk in the homeschool world about making sure we know the content of what our kids are reading. And I completely agree. Very important to us to make sure our kids are reading things we are ok with. But how do you make sure book is ok? I feel like it’s impossible to pre-read all books. I do check TGATB book lists, but of course not every book has been reviewed to see TGATB thoughts on the book. When going to library, kids are randomly picking books that look good to them to read. How do you know on those library trips if these books are ok to bring home and let them read?

I feel like I didn’t establish a good system or respect as much in my kids especially my son as I should have. My daughter has autism so that’s been a lot of navigating but my son is 11 now and I find it hard to get him to do things when we ask. I haven’t stayed consistent. I have had health and mood issues as well. I feel like it’s almost too late but I am going to start having more consequences and working through this.

We try to always bring their behavior and attitudes back to God just like you. “Not honoring me and not honoring the Lord…” when you said that, i felt at home! Those exact words are said often here! God said to honor your father and mother so whenever our kids act up, they aren’t just disobeying us, but God. If you leave out God, then you’re training them to be humanists, which in the end has no transforming power . Anyway….AMEN!!

Same here! People are often amazed at how disciplined my kids are with their school work. I tell them that they are disciplined because I expect them to be. I leave no doubt about what my expectations are. I think if people halfway expect their children to do a lousy job, that is what they will do.

I need examples of consequences you apply! I know each situation and child will be different but I need ideas and examples - if you can :)
