Video idea: Your kids Top 10 favorite books (not school related but that they read for fun). Either a list from each kiddo or a mix of all ages. I’m having a hard time finding quality books for my almost 8th grader girl and almost 4th grader.

Do you still do your morning basket in the summer? What about Missionary stories and other read aloud? Or just during the school year? What about bible reading during the summer. I think it’s important to do bible every day, even in the summer, but not sure I want to do a full morning basket all summer. It’s our first school year with a morning basket so just trying to figure out what we should do for summer and how another homeschool mama handles that!

I just thought of a topic for you to add that I'm curious about. How do you homeschool child-lead/delight directed/ interest base subjects/activities. I probably know the answer to this already as I have been here from the beginning and watched just about every video, but for those who haven't it would be great info to know and have in their tool belts.

We use Sonlight and love all their recommended books. We’ll probably use their lists from now on whether we’re using their program or not. I also have been interested in TGATB Library. My daughter is going in to 2nd grade, but we haven’t gotten into them much yet. I also like to reference The Read Aloud Revival’s book lists, especially for holidays and genres. 😀

Thank you for that helpful video. Reading is my homeschool passion. My girls are young (8,6,4) so we do lots of read alouds for morning basket. I love the Read Aloud Revival family book clubs so I use those lists for our picture and chapter books but we also do a lot of anthologies and I’ll read a story a day from 1-2. Right now we are reading 50 Women Who Love Science, Girls Who Choose God, Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black history (can you tell I have all girls?), A Year Full of Stories and The Wondrous Workings of Planet Earth and our chapter book is book 1 in The Wingfeather Saga. I tend to alternate between classics like Trumpet of the Swan, Charlotte’s Web and Chronicles of Narnia and newer books like Clementine, Adventures with Waffles and Gooney Bird Greene (although that’s not super new). They really like it if there’s been a movie made of it so we can compare and contrast them. For my oldest, she’s an advanced reader who likes to read on her own and I assign books similarly to your method, by giving her a couple options. I like for her to read at least 2-3 chapters in a book and if she isn’t enjoying it, I let her switch to something else. With my middle daughter, she is just starting to take off with reading so we do a lot of shared reading and I give her books that are at or slightly below her reading level to practice on her own. For both my oldest girls this coming school year, I plan to have a list of books for them to read and report on (simple one page reports like yours), just to start them thinking about the books a little more formally. With my youngest, she really wants to learn to read like her sisters so we are going to work through the TGTB PreK and Primer levels this summer (my oldest learned to read at 3 of her own volition and my youngest seems similar in her skill and determination level). We like to use the BOB books for practice but I also have all the TGTB beginner boxes. One fun thing I’ll mention that we’ve been doing is using a book called Stories We Shared, where I track the chapter books we read together (there’s room for notes or a picture, which is fun). In the back are a bunch of reading quests (like read a book from 10 different countries or read a book published in the birth year of each family member). We are going to start with the quests this summer as a way of broadening our reading horizons. We will have a family prize (like a sundae party or going to the aquarium) for each quest we finish.

Memoria Press is a great resource for book lists. They have books in each of their grade level packages as well as supplementary grade level packages. I refer to them a lot for book ideas! I was wondering if you would consider doing a follow-up video review of the books you’ve read over the years as family read alouds? I know you’ve done video reviews on what your kids have read, but I’d love to hear which missionary stories and chapter books have been hits or misses in your family morning time read alouds! Or even just sharing a list?

I would like to know how do you set-up everyone for their independent subjects so that they don't get distracted by the others. I have a 4th grader, a 2nd grader and a prek and I find that to be challenging if they do these subjects in the same room, but on the other hand is more convenient for me to be there for them.

I would love to know: how do you do field trips? I have a rising 1st grader/age 6 this July and a 3rd grader/age 8. We have used Sonlight/Bookshark (since we are with a charter school) since my son was in 1st and my daughter was 4. When my son (the oldest) was little, I would go to garage sales, free little libraries, and thrift stores to get books for him. We still find a lot of books that way. I also subscribed both kids to the free Dolly Pardon Imagination Library and we got a free book every month until they turned 5! We also have tried out different picture book/early reader series from the library and then bought them at Costco, Target or used bookstores. I love reading so we have so many books! My 8 year old can read on his own now, so I have him read most of the book on his own and then I ask him about it after he finished a few chapters or so. I used to read aloud to him and his sister, but now he prefers to read alone and then I read to my daughter what she wants. We are going to try out My Father's World (Adventures in US History) this summer and I hope that they can both participate in the read-alouds. We love getting recommendations from friends too. Since my daughter is not reading yet, we have also downloaded audiobooks for them to listen to together like the Boxcar Children series.

Hey! What about writing? I have a daughter who is going into level 5 for tgatb. I’d like her to be challenged with writing more. The last 2 levels haven’t given a lot of chance to write. I did purchase the creative writing from tgatb for this upcoming year. I’m just not really sure what her writing she look like or how to challenge her more with it. I do have her do a writing prompt each day in addition to handwriting and her LA. Just wondering what you think?

Thank you for all of your homeschool help! You have been so helpful as this school year is my first year homeschooling my 7th grade daughter! I purchased the Character Cards that you use, but how do you implement them in your Morning Basket time? Do you use the Character Cards every single homeschool day? I only have one child (my youngest and only one still at home) that I am homeschooling so it is just the two of us discussing things. Sometimes my husband will chime in if he happens to be home, but not consistently involved in our discussions. Any insight you can provide in regards to these Character Cards would be greatly appreciated! Again, THANK YOU, ASHLEE, you help even more than you realize!🥰

My son is 9 in fourth grade. He was in public school in until last year. He is struggling with reading and can’t even spell a lot of words I think he should know. The school really held him back and I’m trying to figure out how to help him. I feel like we are starting from the beginning with him. My 7 year old was in public school up to kindergarten and he isn’t reading either. He is harder cause he has no interest in learning to read witch makes language arts hard to do with him. If you have any tips it would be great!

I would definitely recommend going and looking back at her older videos when her kiddos were in that stage. It was so helpful in this regard when we first started last year. I know she used all about spelling which is what we are using starting this fall. ( we will use that in addition to explode the code and the good and the beautiful). There are also some great homeschooling groups on MeWe ( I don’t have FB or Instagram) A couple things that helped with getting into self discipline and learning for us was “way of the warrior kid” by Jocko Willink. Sounds silly but my son really related to the character in a way he finally wanted to be self disciplined and learn more. Perhaps Ashlee will touch on this more since I love her videos too and I’m sure she’s got even more amazing tips.

how do you go through all the various read alouds in your morning "basket"/cart? Do you just cycle through each one (doing like 1-2 chapters in each book- so 1-2 chapters of each book per week)? Or do you read a little from each one? or read one all the way through?
