The one that sticks with me is 土豆 tǔdòu - which potato in mainland China but peanut in Taiwan. Could be a life or death translation issue if you have a peanut allergy...

土豆 and 地瓜 both seem like weird words to me. Potatos are neither beans nor gourds. They should be called 白薯 and 紅薯, because that would be logical.

You’re learning traditional characters. There’s no such thing as “traditional Chinese”.

Taiwanese normally refers to Hokkien which is not mandarin Chinese, you are learning traditional characters but the mandarin Chinese language.

@@mrhappy3699 Hokkien originates from S of Fujian, Province, later to Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia., Philippines, Indonesia. etc. Larger S Fujian, includes other sub dialects like Teochew and Soa, tao, in.Guangdong NE coast, Hainan Province Han s, etc. Subdialects and at least modern musics and songs are similar--- just listen to youtube videos. and listen to on line cds!!-

In English, We also say notebook to mean a book for taking notes and also a laptop. Hahahahah But I think it is falling out of usage.

Yes, that absolutely makes sense! How about pharmacy - say you want to buy aspirin? 藥房 yàofáng versus 毒药商店 dúyào shāngdiàn (poison store). Also, how do you call the police in Taiwan? Or a fire truck? What's the difference between a fire truck and a train?

Actually the fifth one (筆電/笔电) is the shorten version of 筆記型電腦/笔记型电脑, which literally means notebook-type computer. Comparatively, the word for PC(personal computer) in Taiwanese Chinese is 個人電腦/个人电脑, but this one is more formally used. We usually use 桌上型電腦/桌上型电脑 in our daily life in Taiwan, which means desktop-type computer literally, or the abbreviation more frequently, 桌電/桌电.

飯店 is a restaurant in Mainland China, but it’s a hotel in Taiwan. And, the Taiwanese don’t use 飯館. They don’t distinguish between different classes of restaurants; they’re all just 餐廳 to a Taiwanese person.

大陆北方人表示酒店可以是吃饭的也可以是住宿的，当然饭店可以是住宿的，比如北京饭店。感冒几乎就是和否定连用，对...不感冒，I‘m not a big fan of。相比于窝心，更常用的是窝火，窝火就没有什么争议了，必然是贬义。还有桌球，你所展示的是台球，桌球给我感觉是欧洲才有的 table football

在中国大陆，笔记本在语言环境不明的情况下已经很少用来指代laptop。通常直接称电脑。我还想到一个计算机和计算器，计算器在大陆是calculator，计算机是电脑的书面语。教科书和论文里面基本不会有电脑两个字。

I think 感冒 really had just one meaning in China back then, and the alter meaning was made popular by early Taiwanese songs and dramas in the 2000s, and the real interpretation of the phrase got lost in translation somehow, people in mainland china thought 不感冒 = dislike. I'm a millennial born in China, the first time I've ever heard of 感冒 being used in a different way other than the meaning of "flu", was from Jay Chou's song, 她的睫毛.

Hi, Ms. Grace. I have a question. I appreciate your response a lot. Actually, I am learning Taiwanese Mandarin now. However, my family is still uncertain if I will go to Taiwan next year or HongKong. As I've learned that HK uses traditional characters same as in Taiwan. My question is if I learned the traditional characters, would it still be useful and would I understand somehow if I go to HK though they speak cantonese? Thank you. 🧡

People who only speak Mandarin will not be able to understand Cantonese. Not only is the pronunciation different, there is a distinct grammar and they often use different words to say the same things. There are also unique characters in written Cantonese that have no counterpart in written Mandarin.

In many languages there are many words having double meanings or even more. Since Taiwan and Mainland China are separated when it comes to chinese, and the language is alive in both, they change many things throughout the conversations and they aren't as the basic meaning. However, there are words that were 'invented' in Taiwan, but throughout talking also became popular in Mainland China. Like for example 早安 (good morning). It was clearly Taiwanese thing. We use it in China too though, it became very popular to the point that I kept greeting people like this, not even knowing it was a taiwanese intention

Regional differences are something that happens in all languages provided they're widespread enough. Off the top of my head, here are some examples of ambiguous words in English: . "rubber" : In the UK it refers to an eraser, but in the US it refers to a condom. "entree" : In the UK it means the appetizer, but in the US it means the main course "jelly" : In the UK it refers to the dessert (jell-o), but in the US it refers to jam

This sort of thing happens in many langauges. Eg in UK/Australia/NZ English vs USA English you can find some very different meanings eg "pissed" = drunk in UK etc English but angry in USA.

Actually I can think of quite a few other examples not mentioned here. Whenever I went to China the use of the word 同志 utterly does my head in because here it means “gay" in slang that has become so normal to use that it is almost like a formal word. I found myself just reacting naturally like WTF you call me gay for when people said that to me in China even though I know the real meaning there is just a way to address someone... Another word is 土豆 which just means potato in China but in Taiwan usually means peanuts (this seems to change and in the last decade or 2 I saw occasional use to mean potato here). Another example 出租車 in Taiwan is rental car, but in China it is taxi. Many other words are different especially things about new technology that didn't exist much more than 70 years ago because a lot of language is developing separately. Eg the words for extension cord, printer some imported foods like avocado.

I find it kind of sad because China was so closed off from the rest of the world for a time, it developed it's own words or did not adopt newer meanings with other Chinese communities. The lack of logic in naming things like 出租車 and the general ambiguity of Chinese characters along with the limited character set means many identical compound words will develop with entirely different meanings. They really need to be on the same page with the language's lack of flexibility. I bet China has more technical words in common with Japan than it does with Taiwan.

The first thing that comes to mind is that 運動 means both "sport" and "exercise" but the meaning is different in English.

It could mean 1. comrade 2. gay/lesbian (adding 男/女 in front of the word when used to differentiate). There is no difference in the meaning-wise, but maybe a difference in the frequency of usage when it comes to 1. due to political reasons. Just like if you have read some scripts about Soviet Union or Communist Party in English, you would exactly know what I mean.

Same as Chinese and Japanese. In Japanese, 人間 (ningen) means "human". In chinese, 人間 (renjian) means "world" Same script, different pronounciation, different meanings 😅😅😅

They are different languages. Each character has dozens of meanings, especially 間, and it depends too much on personal interpretation. The script has no inherent ties to the language. The same way you can romanize Japanese with the latin alphabet and it still makes sense, up to a point. The Japanese have thought of dropping the Chinese script many times and following a phonetic script like Korea. Vietnam historically used Chinese script as well before switching to a French based one. The point I'm making is most of these other languages borrowed the Chinese script, but it's neither vital to the language, nor even appropriate and conducive.

@@aoikemono6414 but the result of using Chinese characters and borrowing an abundance of words from Chinese throughout more than a thousand years has made it so that Japanese has tons of homophones and or words that are spelt exactly the same where it not for the kanji. Therefore taking away kanji would make Japanese extremely hard to read. Korean doesn't have nearly as many words that sound the same so that is why hangul works.

how much really is mandarin spoken in Taiwan? I've read in many places that the majority of people speak Hokkien, with the rest speaking Hakka or native austronesian languages. But the official language of the country is Mandarin, so... what gives? Is Hokkien really the majoritary native language of the population?

In big cities or towns.. mandarin should still be the Main language. And school teaches in mandarin so of course almost all people can speak mandarin except for some old people who didn't happen to receive education in mandarin.

@@hiimcortana1568 it sounds like an artificial language replacement, forcing the population to speak mandarin by making it the education language. what do you mean with "should be still the Main language"? How is and was mandarin spoken as a native language in Taiwan?

@@ynntari2775 If I have to explain your question.. I suggest reading taiwan's history. Taiwan is actually not really a separate race or nationality. Most people that are living in Taiwan are descendants of people from China's fujian province and Hakka people . So obviously they have their own dialects and things. But just because they have their dialects doesn't mean they don't know how to speak mandarin in china,right? Taiwanese people can speak both mandarin and those dialects(Hokkien and kejia hua). I would say only old people speak pure hokkien .People around 50 or younger would speak mandarin for most of the time unless talking with their family.. And most teenagers don't even know hokkien anymore.

Also many people speaking hokkien would be mostly in countryside... Usually in Taipei where I am studying right now,I only hear Hokkien from pretty old teachers or people.. 99% of the time you will only hear mandarin Chinese.

@@hiimcortana1568 I know people in Taiwan can speak mandarin, that has nothing to do with the question. The question is about why should they speak mandarin in the first place. I recieved conflicting informations. one: mandarin is the country's official language; two: almost the entire population doesn't speak mandarin as a first language, but rather as a second or third language. So why? If Taiwan really isn't a part of China as claimed, then the majoritary first language would normally be the country's official language. There is no problem in learning mandarin at school, as it is an important language in the region, the problem is if it is the country's official language without being the pople's language.
