I’ve always wondered about the difference between 視頻/视频 and 影片. This reminds me of the differences in American, British, and Australian English, or even Standard and Kansai Japanese. It’s really interesting how a single language can vary so much depending on the region. And I always love collaboration videos. :) Big thanks to both Grace and Xiaolu!

視頻/视频 are the same word, the first one is written in Simplified Chinese and the other one is written in Traditional way. In Mainland China, you can use them all but 视频/视频 are more referred to the videos and 影片 is a replacement for 电影(movie). In Taiwan, 影片 is often translated to Video. But again, if you are in China, feel free to not distinguish them, because China is very very diverse, people from different regions have different ways of expression, and your 'weird' expression might sound very CUTE to people from other areas. Also in this video, some of the 'Taiwan versions of vocabulary are also used in some regions of China, so, feel free to use any! Again, thanks for being interested in Chinese Culture, hope my comment helps you and hope you are enjoying these channels.

In the the Unites States, most of our Chinese teachers/professors are from the 大陆 ( mostly from Shanghai in my personal experience), So when I first learned Chinese, I learned Chinese Mandarin. However, I did a intensive immersion language in Taiwan, which gave me a solid foundation of my Chinese. So when I speak Chinese I interchangeably use 影片 or 跑面 and U 盤 or 出租车. A lot of native speakers are curious of the mix of Chinese words, which I find interesting. Regardless great video!

I lived in Taiwan for a year back in 2018-2019. I've tried to make it a big priority since to make sure my Chinese matches that used in Taiwan. I was told 品質 and 冰淇淋 are preferred over 質量 and 冰激凌 in Taiwan. And then there's the tone change on 質 also. Since Pleco keeps defaulting to Mainland Chinese, I've been accidentally learning half the words with the wrong tones and words. If in Taiwan, is it better to just be all Mainland pronunciation and vocab, or if I'm inconsistent, would it at least be endearing to the locals?

No worries, in this channel, most of the videos/movies clips used for example are from the mainland. Even if you are learning Taiwanese Mandarin, I don't think you will find any trouble in the mainland because people not saying in that way but will understand what you are saying. Also, some of the so-called Taiwanese Mandarian is widely used in South China. Hope this comment helps and you can enjoy this channel

the fact that when you speak it says "Taiwan" and when she speaks it says "China" makes me think you root for independence? so could that get you in trouble? Although I am 100% ignorant about this issue so I am probably saying something really stupid cause I'm brainwashed but US sided news. In any case, I don't really care. I am from Argentina and I loooooooooooove your channel very much. thank you and your friend for this video

That's just the common misuse of the term " Taiwan independence" nowadays. There are two Chinese governments, ROC and PROC. In Taiwan ,when we say "independence" , we mean separation form ROC, the current exiled Chinese government in Taiwan. This is the original meaning of "Taiwan independence". It meant "Decolonization" So in Taiwan ,when the local say "Taiwan is a country", it is not really connected to the "Taiwan independence" idea. The PROC in China also supported the independence of Taiwan before. They wanted Taiwan to get rid of their enemy ROC, and become a member of Communist International. But things have changed a lot in the past 70 years. ROC become a democratic government in Taiwan, not a dictatorship colonized exiled Chinese government anymore. "Taiwan independence" become a internal affair of political debate like should we vote to change our name to Republic of Taiwan or not. And Communist International is gone forever. So PROC aka. China totally changed their plan toward Taiwan. They buried all the history about they supported Taiwan before, AND just ignore the fact that ROC exist in Taiwan. Pretending that Taiwan is just a province of PROC as other province in China They also accuse Taiwan of being a "Rebellion Province" of PROC. Claim the new definition of "Taiwan independence" "Taiwanese separatism invoked by the evil west try to separate China"
