Peter III was a huge fan of Frederick the Great. That’s the primary reason he sued for peace

You might recognize Potemkin's name because a famous Russian battleship was named after him. The crew of the Potemkin revolted against Czar Nicholas II's rule, which proved one of those nails in the Romanov dynasty's coffin.

They made a movie of that revolt: Battleship Potemkin. It's... very -popular- infamous, here in Italy.

Potempkin Villages (small idyllic villages created out of whole cloth as a propaganda tool to show foreign dignitaries how “prosperous” Russia was) are probably more famous than the battleship named for him.

1:00:11 To answer the person in the chat : Varicellation is for chickenpox (varicella); for smallpox (variola), it's variolation I know that because in French, we commonly use the Latinate names for those diseases (varicelle, variole)

In Italian, too: varicella and vaiolo.

Serfdom was definitely a form of slavery, but in most Western Europe countries it wasn’t chattel slavery-it usually came with some rights, most importantly that your Lord could not buy or sell you, you were a PART of his land, not a separable piece of property. Most their other “rights” (long periods of no work in the off season, freedom to marry any other peasants, no arbitrary punishment etc) were pretty regularly violated, but you couldn’t be told to get up and leave without your consent and oversight from the lords above you in the chain of fealty. They could sell the land you were living on, but you were a part of that property, so you were just giving your taxes to a different taxman. Russia was different though. Their “serfs” were just a prettier name for traditional chattel slavery on a nationwide scale.

serf cannot be traded just for fun, in many aspects serfs was seen AS human being, not a tool, as slaves. You could sell not serfs, but land they entitled to. With all of them. Not separating families. Also, serfs could be richier than they "master" and don`t buy themselves out for tax benefits. And serfs Could sue you or at least try to(look for boyar Morozova case)
