I have Dyspraxia and nuerofibromatosis type 1 and I did my literature GCSE early last year in year 10 because all low sets did it early to get the stress off our backs. I ended up getting a level 4 and my dad had a tear in his eye and was so happy for me. My mum was happy as well they were both chuffed. I did Macbeth and Christmas Carol for paper 1 and Blood Brothers and power and conflict also unseen poetry for paper 2.

I think shame is my favourite theme in the novel. It is a perennial human struggle - the need to shape ourselves to be acceptable to society (so that we can participate) but how this creates so much frustration, un-lived experience, inner conflict and self-disgust. Jung’s idea of ‘the shadow’ is really relevant here.

Hello Mr Salles, I would just like to say that I have my mock exams this week, English Literature being first. And, I would like to say your online videos have helped me out so much. My teacher at my grammar school hardly talks about quotes and only discusses the plot therefore I have to go through the book myself. However, watching your videos has helped me to another level. I recommended my friends to your channel and they said that it benefited them a lot so thank you. I was just wondering if you could mark an essay that I wrote on Jekyll. My exam board is Eduquas and in the exam as well as the analysis, context is equally weighted. Jekyll:  The nominative determinism of Jekyll represents his character. Jekyll is a real name and it comes from the Breton language (old French). In this language, it translates to ‘zadicael’ which is made up of words meaning lord and generous. It was also the name of a 7th century Breton king who was considered to be a saint. Therefore, Jekyll is generous and saint-like. Jekyll is a fitting name for someone who represents all the good things in humanity. This is reinforced by how Jekyll has “every mark of capacity and kindness.” ‘Every mark’ shows that there is nothing evil or cruel things about him. This reminds us of a typical Victorian gentleman who were expected to have strong morals and be particularly kind- especially towards the poor. However, others thought this was a less important part of being a Victorian gentlemen compared to something like keeping a good reputation. Contrasting the kindness, this could link to Jekyll who hid his “pleasures” of evilness and carried them out through Hyde. This again links Jekyll to a Victorian gentleman as they tried to hide their darker side. It also highlights how Jekyll does not just have one side to him; he was a “double dealer” like Edinburgh where Stevenson grew up; it had a sordid Old Town and a prosperous New town.  Jekyll appears to be a good and respectable man like a Victorian gentleman. Jekyll invites Utterson and some other “intelligent reputable” upper class men to one of his dinner parties. The adjectives ‘intelligent’ and ‘reputable’ highlight there importance and it shows the upper circle that Jekyll is involved in. This fits in with him being a Victorian gentleman as an important part of being one is to be from the upper-class. Furthermore, his dinner parties highlight that Jekyll is sociable.  Jekyll’s physiognomy highlight his character, “large, well made, smooth-faced.” His physiognomy gives the reader positive reactions about him and shows him to be a handsome man who cares about his appearance. This contrasts with the other side of Jekyll which is Hyde who was “pale and dwarfish,” “small and very plain dressed,” and a “troglodytic.” This shows how Jekyll has a completely different side to him but he hides it to maintain his reputation. However, Jekyll says that when he is his other side, he feels “younger, happier and lighter.” The evil side of him feels young as it had been repressed, lighter as he is not weighed down by mental worries and happier because as Hyde, he got to do the evil things he desires. This secrecy links to a Victorian gentleman who had to hide their emotions under strict control which meant their desires like sex and alcohol had to be hidden. In Hyde, Jekyll is permitted to fulfil them therefore he feels free.  Before Jekyll created Hyde, he said that he had “a gaiety of disposition” which means that he was always happy. However, he felt he needed to keep his happiness a secret as his happiness was not based on being a Victorian gentleman. The “pleasures” he was up to were not respectable and this lead to him hiding them “a profound duplicity of life.” Furthermore, this is Stevenson’s way in criticising society by saying it is dishonest as they are pretending to be one thing on the surface and having a facade but being something quite different underneath. This refers to Victorian gentleman who hide their unrespectable acts to maintain a good reputation. In Christianity, they take Jekyll’s pleasures and turns them into sins and this leaves him “plunged in shame.” Therefore, it prevents him from enjoying them and he sees this as a “dreadful shipwreck.” Jekyll does not enjoy being himself and it could be said that he prefers Hyde.  Stevenson gives the reader strong clues on to why Jekyll prefers Hyde and also there are hints that he is saying Hyde is a better person than Jekyll. When Jekyll first become Hyde, he said, “I came to myself as if out of a great sickness.” In other words, being Jekyll feels like a ‘great sickness.’ The adjective ‘great’ emphasises the sickness. However, Hyde is seen as a cure and Jekyll says being Hyde is a more genuine existence because he calls him “myself.” Hyde, at the beginning is not someone who goes and commits crimes but is just a pleasure seeker. In addition, Stevenson is suggesting that is Jekyll’s and man’s natural state. Jekyll thinks that Hyde is “natural and human” which Stevenson agrees with. They are saying that going for your desires is a natural thing but to a strict Victorian Christian reader going for your desires without a fear of hell will lead to evil. Stevenson and Jekyll seem to reject English society and this highlighted when Stevenson left England forever a few years after writing the novel.  Jekyll’s experiments in “transcendental medicine” shows what a brilliant scientist he is. However, his research is controversial and he has lost the respect of Dr Lanyon because of his “unscientific balderdash.” Jekyll’s “fanciful” work is not seen as respectable because it crosses the boundary from the science of the material world that Lanyon deals with into the supernatural and mystical. Moreover, scientific discoveries in the eighteen hundreds sometimes challenged religious beliefs. Jekyll uses science to challenge the religious belief that people should try to lead a life free from sin- he splits his side into two and rid the “curse of mankind.” He is motivated by ambition and a selfish desire to be “relieved of all that was unbearable” highlighting a guilty conscience.  After Sir Danvers Carew died, he only feels a sense of “joy.” He says the murder was a “crime, it had been a tragic folly.” In his logical mind, he now sees it as a mistake. However, he sees it as a mistake not because murder is a sin however because he was “overlooked” by the maid. Therefore, he thought about the planning of the killing rather than the brutal act itself. Moreover, the reader would think that after this Hyde would be in power and control but it is not. It is only when Dr Jekyll indulges into one of his secret pleasures as Dr Jekyll instead of Mr Hyde “in my own person” that this occurs. Therefore, once he owns his pleasures, Hyde takes over because he does not feel guilty about them. Hyde can reject Christian morality but Jekyll cannot. This is reinforced by the fact that when Hyde takes over he begins scrawling “blasphemies” in Jekyll’s books and attacks Jekyll’s Christianity, saying that the Christian faith is wrong. This challenges Stevenson’s strict fundamentalist Christian upbringing by his nan, Alison Cunningham.

this is good, i say grade 8/9 worthy but it may not apply now because you won't be sitting the exam due to covid-19. but if u wanted any advice i say develop on your context on why stevenson left britain for good as it is only 1 line. i would give the reason why, it being that he didn't accept the christian morality and values they had going on so he wanted a more primitive society hence why he moved to sumouha

Hi Mr Salles! This video is amazing and honestly your videos on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are really helping me with the analysis and all the hidden messages in the book actually make it really interesting. I watched the whole video and made notes on it and I was just wondering what kind of question they could be used for. Perhaps a question about Jekyll and how Stevenson presents duality in the play? I’m not exactly sure where I could used those points however I really want to because they’re really good and talk a lot about the context. My target is a 5 but in yr 10 mocks I got a 7 and I’m really trying to push myself to get an 8 or maybe even a 9 and I’m hoping I can do so with ur videos ☺️

Could some help grade this mini essay i did based on good and evil as im really struggiling with english lit rn: After the transformation into Hyde it is clear that Jekyll is experiencing a sense of freedom and him being taken away from the rules upheld him. Through his explanation of it; ‘Edward Hyde was so much smaller, slighter and younger than henry Jekyll’ Its clear that despite Jekyll admits to being Hyde already he still presents them with two different ways this duplicitous nature of this explanation shows the level of freedom Jekyll felt for not conforming societal rules any more and to be able to live a life where he could do what he wanted and to act on his impulses and sinful desires. It is interesting seeing this through a Paganist viewpoint which rejects the idea of a single god and the division of god and evil. Jekyll talks about ‘the constellations’ ‘with wonder’ this direct link to the Greeks could show Jekyll's some what change in the way he sees Victorian society as all of the sinful acts were directed from the Christian church and if not you would go to hell this acted as a deterrent for people committing sin as they didn’t want to endure an immortal pain and suffering however paganism takes a different approach in that no matter what you do in society as long as you believe in these gods you would go to the afterlife. It could be argued that Jekyll accepts this viewpoint and he lets go of Victorian society norms and values, he knows he cant change it though and if he does it in his true form (as Jekyll) he will lose all his reputation and any sort of credit he ever had in society as many Victorians especially were heavy Christians who did not challenge the faith in the slightest. This is why Jekyll creates Hyde he knows he doesn’t have the power to change society and to act sinful in his true form but he knows he doesn’t care about his morality and good inside so creates Hyde to act on these impulses with secrecy.

Hey Mr Salles I just wanted to ask about the section where you discuss why "Hyde is not pure evil." Whilst I agree with most of your points, you said that the characters are rejecting Hyde's homosexuality not his physical appearance. However, in chapter 1 there is no indication Hyde is a homosexual but Enfield still detests him. Likewise, in chapter 2 there isn't any indication of Hyde's homosexuality but Utterson still despises him. Therefore, can this be attributed to class divisions or perhaps something else?

@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish Question: How does the speaker present their feelings towards the world they live in? (not a real exam question) The poem: Still Life with Sea Pinks and High Tide - Maura Dooley Thrift grows tenacious at the tide’s reach. What is that reach when the water is rising, rising? Our melting, shifting, liquid world won’t wait for manifesto or mandate, each warning a reckoning. Ice in our gin or vodka chirrups and squeaks dissolving in the hot, still air of talking, talking. My essay: Thank You for reading my essay! In "Still Life with Sea Pink and High Tide" the poet uses the poem as a construct to show the reader the need to stop Global Warming and if we wait for politicians to help stop Global Warming it will be too late. The poem begins with "Thrift grows tenacious at the tide's reach". The verb "thrift" suggests that it is only now at the "tides reach" that there is a careful management and spending of resources. This suggests to the reader that it is only fter sea levels have started "rising" and when Global warming has started that the public realised they need to be careful with their resources, e.g. save energy by turning the lights off; Moreover, the verb "tenacious" further emphasises this as it suggests to the reader that this careful management ("thrift") has only become consistent when the sea levels keep rising tenaciously. Furthermore, this perhaps makes the reader feel anxious as this suggests uncertainty for the future. The poet ends each stanza with present participles which perhaps portrays to the reader the endlessness of what is happening. For example, "rising, rising" suggests how as time goes the sea level will keep "rising" and each "warning" a "reckoning". The "ing" emphasises how the "rising" will keep "warning" to the world and if we keep on "talking" time will run out and the "water" will still be "rising". Dooley perhaps ends the poem with "talking" to perhaps make the reader feel guilty about hoe the general public and the world are always ""talking" about Global Warming yet they are not taking action to tackle global warming and Dooley is perhaps trying to persuade the reader to start taking action. In the second stanza, the poet argues that "our melting, shifting, liquid world won't wait for manifesto or mandate". The noun "manifesto" and "mandate" symbolise politicians and this political reference is perhaps used by the poet to show the reader how we can;t wait for political parties to state in their "manifesto" what they are going to do to tackle global warming. Perhaps, the use of the political reference is to make the reader reflect how nature doesn't wait for politicians and how nature is depending on humanity to save the environment instead of being negligent. This is further emphasised with the use of the personification by stating that the "world" can't "wait". Dooley does this to make the reader feel important and realise that the "liquid world" is dependent on them to tackle global warming. To conclude, Dooley uses this poem to show the reader who represents the general public the need to take action now to tackle global warming before it becomes too late as the sea levels keeps "rising, rising". My first attempt at approaching the unseen poem question. Thank You!

@@nstar3489 Your interpretation of the poem works well. Your language analysis is strong, but your focus on parts of speech is sometimes inaccurate. I'm really upset that teachers teach in this way - it is bogus terminology, and it has led you to ignore the fact that it is a poem. It deals in imagery and sound, repetition and allusion, because it is a poem. You should watch my newest videos on analysing poetry - it gives you a method. sorry for commenting on so many of your videos recently haha but i have another interpretation about Carew (terribly worded sorry) which i want to share :) Stevenson kills Carew off as he is not what he appears on face value (a man with “old world kindness”) and by passing the law criminalising homosexuality in 1885 he is actually displayed as evil, Stevenson therefore suggesting everyone in society is hypocritical in this way by following christian morals which claim to be 'good' but actually discriminate against the minority. Alternatively, we could say Stevenson kills Carew off as he is in fact what he appears on face value and Stevenson is saying that this new law should actually be the “old” way of thinking. He chooses the word “world” to suggest the global issue of believing things without questioning it, yet still presents Carew as “kind” by suggesting that these people are not ill-intentioned as they are brainwashed by society’s christian morals. He says it's wrong repressing our feelings and we should allow ourselves to celebrate our human nature and be ourselves. also... do you think this could be used in an essay about jekyll/hyde or only on one of the themes questions such as duality or the hypocrisy of men?
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use this, but only once you have established plausible reasons why you think the novel's theme is homosexuality. Many English teachers won't have thought about this interpretation, and won't know about the 1885 act.

Both texts must be nominated and submitted to WJEC for approval by the end of September in the year prior to submission." Cloud atlas would be post 2000.

Pink sushi in that case 1984, a clockwork orange as dystopian visions of the future or Dune as Science fiction, or The End of the World in 10 and a half chapters as an experimental novel.

That's so cool. My daughter is dyslexic and became an English teacher this year - dyslexia is a hurdle you can definitely jump. Congratualtions.

If we haven't done anything in class about homosexuality but am still aiming for 9s, is it worth talking about homosexuality or simply talking about the themes that we have gone through in class?
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish

You don’t need the homosexuality, as many teachers and examiners are in denial about this

@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish it was described in a way that wouldn't have made it seem like an accident, using the word 'calmly' and the fact that he didn't seem apologetic. To support your opinion would you say that this is because the story is being told from Enfield's perspective, and that it would evidently be biased?
