Honestly really needed this rn... I am about to start my MPH at Mailman in Epi and I really related to the going to a state school and feeling the imposter’s syndrome

Taylor-belated congrats! I love that you remembered the lighting on roads example! As a Mailman professor, I don’t always know what an introduction in class feels like, although in the last year we received training on this issue, so people are more aware (perhaps because of your video?!). For anyone reading this: I’m sad anyone would ever worry about “belonging” at Mailman based on their undergraduate school. We look for students who work hard, are curious and have an open mind, learn from feedback and suggestions, and challenge themselves-while supporting others in the Mailman community. And you exemplify that. : )

Thank you so much, Prof. Laugesen! I hope that all reading this will see that they don’t need a fancy academic pedigree for a career at Mailman ☺️

"You don't need to have a job title in mind like 'This is what I wanna do with my degree.' You don't have to have an organization in mind like 'This is where I wanna work.' All you have to do is know what you love and know what you're passionate about, and know what you're good at doing." I almost cried because of how badly I needed to hear this!! Before undergrad, I thought that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher, but in undergrad, I had amazing experiences in a course, internship, and research opportunity that made me realize that I was passionate about sexual health education. But I applied to Education PhD programs last fall, because all of my previous experience had been within education and that was all I really knew. I thought my specific passion of engaging with students and facilitating discussions on sexual health was maybe a bit specific for education programs, but that I would figure something out along the way. I ended up being rejected from the programs I applied to, and in a deep, teary-eyed web search, I realized that my interests were much more tailored to MPH programs instead. While it was refreshing to find programs (like Mailman's!) that excite me to my core, it's sooo nerve-wracking because I realized that unlike during high school and early undergrad, I don't know exactly what I want to do yet. And I'm scared to admit that in my applications, because I think that everyone else around me has clear visions and goals and is accepted based off of how well they can articulate how their past experiences and the program will help them achieve them. This video reminded me that that is NOT the case, and I'm so thankful to have heard it :') Sorry for the long message, but thank you so much for this!!

Thank you so much for your comment! While the road might have been tough, I am so glad that you found something you are passionate about! As long as you show your interests and passions, schools typically don't need (or want) you to layout an exact plan (partly because that is not realistic!). Wishing you all the best in this next chapter

You really nailed it in this video. I'll be graduating with my MPH in June 2021, and you put everything I felt throughout my program into words. Now I'm deciding if I want to go on and get my DrPH.

Hi! Thank you for your videos and the wonderful insight of your MPH experience at columbia. I am in the process of deciding which program to enroll in, and your videos have been really valuable in addressing the questions and reservations that I have about the program at columbia. One thing that I want to hear from the perspective of a mailman student is life and living in nyc. Specifically, what it's like to live and adapt in a city like new york (I am an outsider), what neighborhoods are trustworthy and popular for mailman students to live in, commuting, living on a budget, etc. It would be great if you could consider making a video that addresses some of these. Once again, thank you, your videos have been very helpful :)

This video is all about costs and budgeting: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbCfptNz0qnGY6c.html This video is about the moving process: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7l6qLp735_Km4k.html Most Mailman students live between W 150th & Dyckman Street but there are also a decent number of students who live near main campus (W 100th-W 125th)

Thanks a lot for your Videos!!! Very helpful. I got the offer from Mailman MPH in the dept of Biostat. I heard that the six core studios in the first semester are very labor-intensive and exhausting. Is that true?

Hi! What was your undergraduate major and what did you specialize in for your MPH? Are there specific classes you took as an undergrad that you need before applying for MPH school?
@MomentsInMed
@MomentsInMed 3 жыл бұрын
You can check the required prerequisites for the programs you’re applying to but none of the programs I applied to had anything other than basic stats (and maybe a few others you’ll likely take naturally). I have two undergrad degrees. One in biomedical sciences. One in public health with a psych minor. And my MPH specialization was Health Policy & Management. Be sure to check out some of my other public health videos where I talk about my concentration, my certificate, and the experience in general!

Hi Is the School of General Studies as prestigious and Columbia College and SEAS? Thank you!

I don’t know much about it but I would see why not! However, I will caution that you should pick a school based on your fit with that program, not the prestige.
