I get a lot of questions about how much it costs to go to Columbia, if the cost of grad school is worth it, how much I spend to live in New York, and many more financial questions. So for this video, I finally gathered up all my financial aid info, bill amounts, monthly budgets, and I even tracked my purchases for a month. I talk about student loans, how to budget, how to make sure you're never late on bills, and if I think it's all worth it in this video! Oh thank god for you! This video has lessened my anxiety. My wife and I are planning to do a SMP before applying to med school and we have a child together and I have been stressing on how in the heck we’re going to pull this off financially. Yes I’m aware that you possibly do not know how grad school would effect an couple with a child for that matter, but it gives some sense of clarity that it is possible and budgeting and discipline is the key. I am working on trying to figure out the best way to make a video like the one you suggested, just because everyone is different and I would hate for people to get caught up in a "checklist" type mindset for how to get in. I remember watching this when I was just beginning to consider applying to an MA at Columbia. I thought a) you were an inspiring scholar and b) I could never get in! Now I'm back because I did get in, and I'm trying to actually work out how to pay for it 😂

Thank you for this! I just had an info session with some faculty at Yale and on average for the environmental 2 year masters program it's 60k a year and on average they give 20k in financial aid a year. Yikes! Unless I got a full ride I really cannot commit to paying that amount back on top of my undergrad loans I already have. I liked listening to an actual person discuss their honest experience so thank you for sharing!

Hi thank you so much for this video! Columbia MPH is my top program that I am applying to. I just filled out the FAFSA but I didn’t input my parents info because it said I would be considered as independent. Will this effect need based funding? And if so can I go back and add their info! Thank you again for all the info!

Definitely confirm this with the programs you’re applying to, but I’m pretty sure that you will not be considered for need based funding unless you enter your parents info (at least at Columbia). But I am 99% sure you can go back in to FAFSA and add it. You’ll also receive updated info with timelines/deadlines once you’re accepted 😊

wait, where is your expense for food? Do you cook your everyday meals? Your expenses are actually less than I expected. It seems to me that you didn't spend a lot on food. I finished my undergrad at the University of Toronto and are choosing between Columbia and Hopkins for MPH right now. During my undergrad, I spent almost all of my monthly budget on rent and food takeouts(1200cad for rent and 1000 for takeouts TT) 'cause I suck at cooking. So I don't know how much it gonna cost me if I eat out everyday in New York City. I notice Mailman students actually got to choose to live in on-campus housing and dormitories. I was wondering why didn't you choose the on-campus housing? Thanks for sharing this☺️

So food is part of my "variable" budget from this video. I do try to cook the majority of my meals so you can see my grocery spending from Trader Joes in the "what I spent in a month" section. I don't think that you have to be good at cooking necessarily (I'm certainly no gourmet chef lol) but what I usually do is cook a really big batch of something that will last me all week and that seems to be the most financially responsible way to feed myself. I do occasionally succumb to getting take out/fast food and my first semester here, I ate out a lot but like you point out, that can get really expensive and it just wasn't sustainable so I try to limit that as much as possible now but I still make the occasional trip to Chipotle or McDonald's (; As for housing, I have never liked the idea of dorm living (personal preference) plus Columbia's dorms are very competitive. Thank you so much for this information!! I really need this rn ( I am a newly admitted MPH student at Columbia). May I ask how hard is it to find a TA job? I am an international student and I really want to find some source to fund my partial living expenses.

So glad the videos are helpful! At Mailman, you can't TA until 2nd year (to my knowledge) but at the end of your first year, you can apply to be a TA for the CORE classes and I think most people that apply get a position. I would definitely double check with the school about the specifics of working as an international student because I know there are some rules around that but I do not know the specifics. im curious how did you afford to move into an apartment and how can you get an apartment since your not making ts a certain amount of money above the rent?

I ended up in a unique situation. But long story short, I paid the year up front but many people get guarantors and/or multiple roommates!

So financial aid is thru Fafsa.gov? which only provide you with student loan? is there grants like federal grants which you don't have to pay back beside student loan? for private university does it mean you only have student loan choice instead of federal grants?

FAFSA gives your university the info that it needs to determine your eligibility for grants, scholarships, and loans. In undergrad, you will often receive grants and loans but in grad school, you typically will only receive loans. You can search for and apply to some grad school scholarships but they are fewer than undergrad scholarships.

34k you are talking about is the loan got or aid given by University.? Explain plz

Both. So the majority of the financial aid that I received was via Federal loans which still come through the university. I also received some money as a scholarship through the university. So not all of that $34k is loans but most of it is. I hope that answers your question!

How many credits does the $21,828 tuition per semester cover? Does that include all fees for the semester? Is the MPH tuition pretty similar to the MHA tuition? Thank you!

In the MPH program at Columbia, that is a flat rate per semester (I.e., it doesn’t matter how many credits you take). And that number should include fees, yes. Im unsure about the MHA tuition but should be an easy Google search 😊

During my master’s program, I worked two “service” type jobs that didn’t require a bachelor’s and one internship that I got through the school.

You have to pay back anything called a loan but do not have to pay back anything called a scholarship or grant. So in this video, yes, I will have to pay back the majority of my financial aid (the loans) but won’t have to pay back the small scholarship I got each semester.

Did your landlord take your loans as proof of income? I'm hoping that won't cause any conflicts

Some landlords do and some don't so it really depends. I went through a very unique process for my apartment so it isn't really generalizable but many students will find roommates and/or have a guarantor sign on the lease with them.
