Jupiter Inlet is back open and today we had a nice swell creating a lot of angry waves. A big swell on this day led to one boat almost flipping over. It's not just the mouth of the inlet you have to worry about it's also the sandbar that forms just offshore. With the right swell the breaking waves on the sandbar can be a tough match for some boats and captains.
Vessels featured in this video:
Grady White with Twin Yamahas150hp
HCB 42 Siesta with Quad Yamaha 425hp
Robalo R302 with Twin Yamaha 300hp
Pro SPorts 2660 power catamaran with Twin Yamaha 225hp
Skater 28 with Twin Mercury 400R racing outboards
Intrepid 322 Cuddy with Twin Yamaha 300hp
SeaVee 340Z with Twin Mercury 350hp
Jupiter 31 with Twin 300hp Suzuki
SeaVee 340Z with Triple 350hp Mercurys
Pursuit 310 with Twin Yamaha 250hp

So many people aren't from the area here with these boats, or just moved here. PSA for anyone having to traverse jupiter on a rough day. As soon as you get out the inlet, make a hard left or right, the worst water is straight out. Watch the sand bar on the south side, it comes and goes and can get super shallow at times, if you see the waves breaking in the middle of nowhere, there's a reason. When returning do the exact opposite, but be very careful of the shoal just inside the inlet on the north side, stay towards the middle. The south side does not shoal like the north side.

I’ve ALWAYS done the left turn, cruise another couple hundred yards and then head out east! I’m retired from boating now, but I did it this way since 1973, starting out with my 10’ boat, 9.5 Evinrude O/B. Then in the boat I built in 96, 14’ 25 Evinrude tiller, day and night! Nights were kinda tricky, but after so many years of doing it, it just got to be second nature. Always made sure that the moon was out though, and it helps, believe me!

A G W has a great reputation as a solidly built well designed boat. It is scary when folks put their equipment and themselves is such situations. A lot of equipment wouldnt be as forgiving.

The white breaking waves seem to be magnets to these boaters. It did look like there were spots with big (but at least not breaking) waves that would be a far better route choice.

If unfamiliar with an Inlet stay away from breakers and maybe hold back until a commercial boat or fishing boat goes out and just follow their line. Same with coming back in, follow an experienced Captain or your track on your GPS going out.

It is possible that the Grady owner wanted to see what his boat could handle and or was showing someone what a Grady White can take. Boat never rolled or broached. Agree that he should have made a turn at the end of the inlet vs going straight. Lesser boats would not have done what this Grady did.

Monohull have more loading capacity , more closed space under , if un need a bath or a sleeping room you need monohull! Catamarans offer better behaviour and comfort in rough sea! When you fishing at low speed they roll less. If you need a daily boat and dont care to piss hanging CAT are the way

Boats that big, 40+ feet can be tricky to dock even with 4 engines especially if you're trying to "paralell park" at a dock with only a few feet of clearance on each end. I do shake my head when I see the bow thrusters on 30-35 footers with twin engines but not on a 40+ footer.

East wind and outgoing tide. Jupiter is narrow and shallow and the current is very fast moving, when the current meets the wind and waves from the east wind the waves can get big. There's moving shoal on the north side inside the inlet and a sometimes sand bar just outside the inlet to the south. Many people have died here.

@@8180634 gotcha. Very interesting and also very crazy! I wonder why they don't build a break wall just in front of it to possibly help. It's done here on Lake Michigan outside of the harbor mouths to get to the main lake. East winds can kick up 6+ft waves fast. Lake Michigan acts like an ocean in many ways. Thanks for the info
