Played with and against Johnny Giles a number of times and was a great player and he was such a tough tackler but also a very nice man off the field. John Dempsey ex Chelsea and Eire player.

Recent interviews with the Sky boys all said Souness had the best career out of them, even Keane said it was hard to argue with. What a footballer he was. Giles, Bremner and Souness would still be of inestimable value nowadays.

I remember many years ago ROI were playing Sweden at Dalymount Park in Dublin and a young Manchester United youth player was winning his 1st cap. The press had a field day on who was this young lad called John Giles . On the Wednesday before the match Sweden had beaten England at Wembley and with our Irish mentality we wanted to beat the team who beat England . So the place was packed and in the 1st few minutes Giles hot the ball and he looked up and hit what must have been a 50 yard cross field pass which landed on Joe Lavertys toe. The place erupted. Sweden took a 2 goal lead but we beat them 3/ 2 . On that day we saw a star being born in the great John Giles

The greatest Irish soccer player there has been is George Best not Johnny Giles. JG was perhaps the greatest to play for the Rep. of Ireland - but difficult to comment as I never saw him play.

As a Leeds fan if I was picking an all time world XI I'd have to pick Souness over Johnny... just. Can't have both in there together. I just think Souness had a bit more of an edge with his shooting and attacking play. Maybe it's because I saw more of him as I grew up in the late 70s and 80s. But Johnny looks great at 80 :)

Souness was born with webbed toes which he always said gave him better control of the ball and that extra spring compared to non mutant human beings

Down the back of your legs. You don't get that now. They are like children now, over protected & tackling crazily is basically outlawed. A great sliding tackle where you get the ball first & the player then tumbles over, that gets you sent off. Football is insipid & sheer greed by so called players. RIP football.

I was there at St James Park when Giles broke George Daltons leg with one of the most cynical fouls I've ever seen. Never liked him after that.
