Grafting of woody plants
What is a graft?
A graft is produced when a living part of one plant is inserted in another, and both parts meet vegetatively and then coexist.
The base plant that receives the graft is known as a pattern, while the vegetative part is coupled, cutting, grafting or stem. In this article we will discuss some elements of the graft of plants with woody stems, which are the most common.
To be successful at the time of grafting it is very important to put in contact the different parts that form the stems in order to guarantee the functional compatibility of both parts of the graft, the interaction of the respective cells, and with it the transit of the vital substances.
Which plants can be grafted?
There is no method to predict the result of a graft, but in general terms it can be said that the more botanical affinity there is between the species, the greater the chances of success of the graft.
All kinds of plants can not be grafted indistinctly, these can be carried out with great success among plants of the same botanical family, for example, citrus fruits on citrus fruits or fruit trees of one variety on another variety etc.
However there are cases of plants from very different families that can be grafted successfully.
