Once upon a time the best sounds of all were the sound of B-17s safely returning from long and dangerous bombing missions over war-torn Germany.
American historian, Robert Butche's book [ Gunnery Boys ] about the men who flew out of Grafton Underwood air base details the lives of two American lads, both having turned twenty years of age, who served as gunnery crews on the legendary B-17 bomber, Dark Angel.
During two years of in-depth research on Grafton Underwood, and the vast military base constructed beneath the tree canopies of historic Grafton Woods, the excellent drone footage captured by Graham Butlin, 7 decades after the war, revealed the ghost of Grafton Underwood aerodrome in Northamptonshire.
The two Americans, Gordon Shaffer and Kenny Stewart, were shot down near Leipzig and sent to a prison camp known as Stalag VII A. They survived, were freed by General George Patton's 3rd Army, and returned to their hometown, Denver, Colorado.
Pvt. First Class Gordon Shaffer was the last to pass on [ December 26th, 2018 ] the same year the story about The Gunnery Boys was completed.
The commemorative film about Kenny and Gordon's adventures at Grafton Underwood is available on this channel: Gordon and Kenny's Big Adventure.

Thank you for making this article. It is important to remember the brave aircrew's who flew form these now farmers fields, some who never returned home to their families. It is good to see that the basic layout is still visible and that a memorial is i place on the main runway. Pity the iconic control tower didn't survive.

Passed through this area some years ago and if it wasn't for the memorial would never have realised that was once a large air base and standing at the memorial I thought of all the airmen who flew on a one way ticket. Unused airfields make me feel very nostalgic and it's a pity that a least the control towers could not have been saved as a memorial.

My father was born in Geddington 1938 and as a small boy watched the B17s flying off in the morning ,and coming back in the evening ,his dad my grandad was in the RAF as a navigator in India /Burma fighting the Japanese ,great memories with them walking round this place in the 1970s

Your father and grandfather were among the heroes of the 20th century, one for the India campaign and the other a wide eyed youngster who saw the bombers that put the Reich on the defensive even before the Yanks came to give a hand. Thanks for a tip 'o the cap and hello, Rick Davis. The two young boys I wrote about in my book on the Dark Angel B-17 and its crew were 17 year old Denver lads, sent off to war. And long remembering the bicycle shop in Geddington where they purchased 2 bikes the night before Dark Angel was shot down on a mission to Erfurt in February of 1945. They both survived and lived full lives. Robert

My wife was born on the airfield in one of the Nissen huts: after the war there was a tremendous housing shortage and her parents along with many other local people squatted in the disused huts until they were re-housed in one of the new housing estates that sprung up in Kettering. Incidentally it was wonderful to hear an American voice doing the narrative.

Jack Bassman You're wife's story is reflective of so many lives sent careening about in wartime -- when tomorrow seems never to come in a world where the young fly away and fail to return. The voice speaking extemporaneously from long hours of research is mine. But the star of this film is Graham Butlin who secured the images of trees at Parade Rest guarding long gone runways pounding through the darkness to the sound of ten thousand horsepower clawing at the still, night air.

@@transworldmediagroup I agree, all your work is to be applauded and especially Graham for his superb drone and camera work as well as the time it must take to arrange everything. Thank you to Graham and you all.

Great video thank you. The whole area was our playground as kids, digging up shell casings from the gunnery range area!

Thanks for remembering youthful good times playing among the remains of the gunnery range, Gary. This film was not intended to be shared, for it was a spur of the moment undertaking during the research work for a book about two young yanks from Denver Colorado. One of those men was a lifelong friend, Gordon Shaffer, who passed away well into his 90s a few months after this film was shared with the research team.

Thanks very much for posting this. My father was stationed at Grafton Underwood for about two years from 1943-45. I now have a much better understanding of what the airbase looked like.

The years your father was stationed at Grafton Underwood were the same time frame [ 1944-45 ] as researched for my book "Gunnery Boys", in which Gordon Shaffer and Kenny Stewart, two boys from Denver, who ended up on the same B-17 Crew on Dark Angel. Some of the other content on this channel is about the Americans, and life at Grafton Underwood.

So many of these one time airfields in Lincolnshire. The last places so many men stood on the earth . It is good they are now returned to peacetime farming etc., this is what it was for, to bring back a form if peace. But each one should have a memorial and it should be maintained by the people of the area .

The voice is the Author of Darl Angel (un'pulished) Hnoring American gunners who survied 18 missions. I am that Author. This was not made to be shown to public, for this was a review of the footage while I offered notes and observation. No notes at hand, everything was from memory abset script. Thanks to all who caught a Yankee voice was obvious -- well done. Robert Butche, Historian and Author
