MASTERS OF THE AIR | GRAFTON UNDERWOOD AMERICAN AIRFIELD WW2 |UK
Today I wanted to do something very different to my usual videos. This video has nothing to do with Thailand but I am hoping you will find the video interesting anyway (especially if you are an American.) Grafton Underwood airfield was the first USAAF airbase in the UK and was assigned station 106 of the 8th air force. Grafton Underwood was the first American airfield that undertook bombing missions to Germany with just 12 B17’s flying fortress bombers on the station.

The civilian shown in front of the theater at 22:00 ish is the American comedian, Billy Gilbert. You can see his name on the marquee on the theater in the background of the photo. Fantastic work on the video! I live in the US and have never been able to visit any of the old airfields, though they are a favorite subject. This video made me feel as if I was actually there. Many thanks.

Flew over this disused airfield 3 years ago, once in a G103 Twin Astir from nearby Lyveden Airfield and also in a PA28PIPERCHEROKEE reg G-LIZI from Peterborough Sibson. Respect to those who flew in earlier times in more hazardous times. John.FAI/BGA 52417.

There are some pieces of runway on some sites some buildings still stand some in use ,some are museums, and there are control towers at some which are museums. But most of the runways were broken up and the hardcore used to rebuild roads.

I'm a loyal fan of your Thailand videos, but I was really surprised and happy to see this video on a different but interesting topic. My father was US Army Air Force Captain stationed with the 714th Squadron, 448th Bomb Group, Seething, England - in East Anglia from 1943 to 1945. His Group flew many missions over France and Germany in B-24 Liberators. Most of these heroes are gone now, but I hope they will never be forgotten!

We live very close to Grafton Underwood, my wife and he elder sister were born on the base in 1949 after it was decommissioned; there was an acute shortage of housing and her parents, like many others, either squatted in or rented the huts, I’m not sure which. I had the great honour of meeting some of the brave American airmen there when they visited a few years ago. Thank you so much for the post and the narrative.

Gday mate cheers for all your effort putting this together. I’m also an avid abandoned airfield fan and a history buff.It’s great to see around the world and it’s better when it’s well researched. I woke up in icu four years ago. I’d lost both my legs and laying in bed contemplating my life. A movie came on about a famous bomber and a young fella told a really funny joke about a bloke loosing a few limbs haha it helped me a hell of a lot. It reminded me how like I was. Soldiers and civilians in ww2 went through a lot worse than me and did it tuff on there bare limbs after amputations. Today I have biomechanical prosthetic legs and legs for racing dirtbikes. Even my wheelchair has mud tyres.. that famous plane left a field like this in England flown by some yanks. Good onya mate this is a great documentary.

Thank you so much Peter for such an excellent video. It is , indeed, very important that we retain as much of these WW2 bases as possible, thus allowing our younger generation an insight to what we oldies experienced all those years ago.

Thanks, Peter, for a very worthwhile video showing a real slice of WWII history. Very interesting to see the current photos compared to the actual scenes when the base was active during the war. Appreciate your efforts to research the base, and provide details of the lives of the soldiers and airmen who served there. My father, who is 92, entered the Army when he turned 18 in 1946, so he is just a few years younger than many of the people who were stationed there.

If you plan on doing any more video may I suggest RAF Upper Heyford and RAF Greenham Common nice job on the video Pete I hope things are well keeping the video coming "The "rock-solid" relationship between the United States and Great Britain that President Barack Obama described during his March 2012 meetings with British Prime Minister David Cameron was, in part, forged in the fires of World Wars I and II Despite fervent wishes to remain neutral in both conflicts, the U.S. allied with Great Britain both times. Take care and God bless

Well done Peter. I appreciated the education. In one of your comments, you mentioned exploring the airfield for quite a few years. I was just wondering, have you ever thought about or sought permission from the estate to use a metal detector in the communal areas ? Maybe it's not allowed, but I imagine a lot of interesting things could be found there
@ThailandBound

Hi Randy, I know people who have asked and being turned down so I haven't bothered myself. But I went metal detecting with a friend of mine on another Airfield and we just kept finding unspent 50 calibre bullets

Great video of a new and different subject. Talk about bravery of the young men[3 uncles WW2 USAAF], I had the privilege of looking inside waist gunner position of a B-17 at a stateside airshow, the metal there was no thicker than a razor blade for protection against flak and fighter cannon. Another topic for you could be missile silos when the UK had its own long range missiles.

A really good video for the public to be able to see how Grafton park woods are now. Maybe if you come again you could contact our group ‘Friends of the 384th’ and we can take you round and show you more that you may not have found before and give you more accurate information too. We love this place and have been carrying out a lot of work lately so I imagine it has changed a fair bit since you were there last. Thanks for your video.

Hi Jason, I live very close to the airfield and I know Neil, I think he is in your group, right? You can email me on peter@thailand-bound.com I also have the maps for both the live airfield site and the communal area. I have seen several videos on Grafton Underwood made for KZfaq and I think mine is one of the better ones for detail without blowing my own trumpet.

we have another airfield just north of harborough , i believe they had wellington bombers stationed there again three runways with some of it still visible but rapidly disappearing under a housing estate and industrial park , but some of the peripheral pill boxes etc are still visble , syston of course in northamptonshire was i think a ww 2 airfield , there is another to the east of corby but the name escapes me , the main runway is still intact at this site , take it easy kind regards from harborough
