It WAS 57,000 acres. It includes 8 separate places under one base name, one or more being training ranges, which are wide open spaces because you're doing maneuvers and/or using live ammo.

3:51 You can go and walk around museum ships all over the US. There was a joke about the US having the 1st and 2nd largest navies, because of the museum ships. Possibly the 3rd as well if they counted the mothball fleet.

I was going to recommend naval museums if you wanted to get up close to some ships. There are a few museums near me that have decommissioned ships in their ports that you can walk through and/or get tours. I remember going on a few tours during school field trips and even spending a night on a decommissioned battleship while I was in the boy scouts. It was really cool as a kid. I still remember the awe inspiring feeling while walking up to the 16" triple-gun turrets.

He meant 57,000 acres. I am from San Diego. The bases he was referring to stretch across towns about 20 miles apart from north to south. San Clemente is an entire island off the coast morth of San Diego they use for fighter plane and bobmer target practice.

They seem to be speaking only of Navy presence and with the exchange of airbase Miramar to the Marines means they are only speaking of North Island and not including Miramar or Camp Pendelton. Even though the Navy and Marine Corps work closely with each other.

The soldiers with beards are probably special forces, seals and green berets. They have to go places where beards are common and blend in. Also lots of contractors around there. They are ex military but are allowed beards as well.

I was gonna post the same thing. Contractors (often ex-military) aren't held to the same dress code and you'll see some special forces on base at times.

It was actually encouraged when you get out of a recon unit and go to MRR and MRSG in MARSOC to grow hair and a beard.

I was on an expo force in Bahrain in the mid 90’s we were a afsc (I’m not sure if I can say which one)that flew in helicopters. We had a slim chance of getting shot down, so we were allowed to were beards to better blend in to the indigenous people if we survived the event

I have family in Norfolk VA, the largest base in the US. They even decorate some of the ships during Christmas ❤

The crew "standing around" on deck goes back to when gunnery crews would stand on deck to show their ship was not a threat to another. That has carried on as a tradition among modern navies.

I am in San Diego, CA and we have the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier open as a historical museum. I would have to imagine that other naval bases will also have museums set up like this.

I live in South Carolina . There is a Naval and Air Museum at Patriots Point Mount Pleasant close to Charleston S.C. When I was in the US Navy my first command was a DDG in Charleston S.C. Naval Station . USS Sellers DDG 11 .

I was on the Midway CVA41 but it was in the San Francisco Bay. When in San Diego I was on the USS Ticonderoga CVA14.

Thats called a flightdeck parade. No they don't have a flightdeck parade when leaving or entering port. Its for special occasions only.

It should have been the Tico, but China bought it and now the Tico(the most decorated CVA in the fleet) belongs to china. Sad! Thats Ticonderoga if you didn't know!

If you're interested, on your visit to the US, you can tour a decommissioned WW2 battleship, The U.S.S. North Carolina in Wilmington NC. Today the price is $14 for everyone 12 and older. $10 for children 6-11. Two other prominent US military bases are located in North Carolina. Fort Bragg Army base now named Fort Liberty. 2nd is Camp LeJeune Marine Base.

When I was in the navy, we would have civilians come to our submarine to take a tour all the time so it's not an uncommon thing. You just have to get permission from the base to go out to one of the piers to have a guided tour on the boat.

You can take a boat tour of Norfolk which takes you next to the ships in the water. Getting on the base is tricky....usually you need someone on the base to vouch for you and be responsible for your being there. I can get on any bases due to my job.

Ships returning to Pearl Harbor have all personnel on deck to render honors to the USS Arizona as they pass the memorial.

I lived right outside NASCC for almost 10 years. It is weird after so long, the thought that a MAJOR naval base is miles away from you, doesnt actually cross your mind regularly.

@GrahamFamilyReacts, Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport are both in Jacksonville, Florida. I was born and raised about 40 - 50 miles from these bases as a child during the late 50's and throughout the 60's. This was at the height of the "Cold War" and we had the "Duck and Cover" drills at school 3 - 4 times a month. Even as children we knew that as close as we were to these bases a "Duck and Cover" would do us no good. The amount of atomic firepower that would have been unleashed on the Jacksonville area would most likely wipe the northeast portion of the state of Florida from the map.

I literally live across the street from NAS Oceana which is located in the next city from Norfolk (and the Navy Base). The jets take off and land every day as they are practicing aircraft carrier landings and take offs. They fly so low going back to the base that I have been tempted to paint "Do Not Land Here" on my roof. 😂 They thankfully change their flight patterns often so that no one neighborhood absorbs all the sound. They are so loud when it's my neighborhood's turn that I have to pause videos because I can't hear. Many people have "I ❤ Jet Noise" bumper stickers. Newcomers to the area soon regret saying they can't stand the noise, as they get told (sometimes not too nicely) that it is the sound of freedom. After 15 years living here, I still look to the sky when a jet flies over.

When I was a kid, MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa is only 10mi as the crow flies from my house. Back in the 80's & 90's MacDill had a F--16 training wing. I would always see two F-16's in formation and a third about a mile back headed south east over my house. There was a bomb range around Arcadia, two student about to practice bombing and the instructor watching. I don't know the dates or itinerary for your US visit. You should look into of there is a "Air Show" within travel distance. There are retired naval ships all over the country. Here is a list and their locations. USS Constitution (Charlestown, MA) - A wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate launched in 1797, and the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat. USS Missouri (Honolulu, HI) - A battleship that served in World War II, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm, and famously hosted the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in 1945. USS Alabama (Mobile, AL) - A South Dakota-class battleship that served in World War II and is now a National Historic Landmark. USS Midway (San Diego, CA) - A former aircraft carrier that served from 1945 to 1992 and is now a museum ship and a popular attraction in San Diego. USS Texas (La Porte, TX) - A New York-class battleship that served in both World War I and World War II and is the last remaining dreadnought battleship in the world. USS North Carolina (Wilmington, NC) - A fast battleship that served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and earned 15 battle stars. USS Iowa (Los Angeles, CA) - A battleship that served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War, and is now a museum ship in the Port of Los Angeles. USS New Jersey (Camden, NJ) - A battleship that served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Lebanese Civil War, and is now a museum ship on the Delaware River. USS Wisconsin (Norfolk, VA) - A battleship that served in World War II, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm, and is now a museum ship in Norfolk. I was on the bridge navigation team aboard a US Destroyer based in Pearl Harbor. We trained alot with the Subs based in Pearl playing war games. I totally get the hair standing up on your back thinking about Subs. Every once in awhile we'd get a glimpse of one at periscope depth. Seeing that huge black cigar just under the surface against the bright blue of a calm Pacific Ocean - it was over 50 years ago and it still gives me the willies thinking' about it. . . . . . . . . You can't get on the bases to see the ships unless by special permission/guest since 9/11. But San Diego has an Aircraft Carrier Museum- The Midway. You have to pay for a tour, of course, but you can park nearby and walk up close. Just that alone to see its immense size is awe inspiring. I have been on it, and still can't get over how majestic it is. ❤🇺🇲

I dont know how much you have heard about the US fleet of museum ships, but you can actually go onto different navy vessels throughout the country. I have been on two submarines in the last year myself, one in Groton, Connecticut and another in Baltimore, Maryland. There are even museum aircraft carriers... you should look up museum ships in the area that you come to visit if you want to get up close and personal

San Diego has a great Maritime Museum. Steel hulled sailing ships, ww2 sub, steam powered ferry, pre ww1 Navy pilot boat and tours. They have historic sailing on a ship from the 1500s, or on the oldest Navy Pilot boat in the US around the bay, or a Pirate performance where you get engaged in the activities and so on. Very fun!

If they are interested in battleships they better check ahead, they are most going through repairs and drydocking around now. TX is almost done and NJ is about to go in. MO is in the best shape right now in HI.

When you visit the States, check into attending an air show where they fly many of the planes that you're interested in or visiting an Air and Space Museum or one of the Retired Carrier Museums. Really are incredibly interesting.

Yeah there are plenty of museum ships. I've been on Aircraft Carriers, battleships, destroyers and a submarine. All are so massive, its amazing how large the inside of a submarine is.

Think about the naval bases here but also remember the 80p to 1000 overseas military bases as well. Some are gigantic like the ones in Germany. You should react to "the US military is everywhere by Johnny Harris" it goes over the bases And definitely do the B2 with her!

The people standing on the edges of the deck is called “man the rails”. This is ceremonial and is almost always done when pulling into some foreign ports we are trying to maintain relations with (it is impressive looking) and when the ships return to their homeport. When I deployed aboard the LHA/LHD ships; we would alternate one Marine and one sailor. A few interesting facts about NAS JRB: It is only about five miles from downtown Fort Worth. Lockheed Martin shares the runway with the military and the F-35 stealth aircraft are assembled here in Fort Worth at the production facility on the other side of the runway. The F-16 aircraft are also assembled here. It is common to see C-130s, KC-130s, F/A-18s, F-16s, and F-35s taking off from here. I was stationed here from 2001 to 2006 (when I retired from the Marine Corps) and my first civilian job after the Marine Corps was on the F-35 program at Lockheed. The base population is not that large, but the Fort Worth area surrounding it has over one million people. Come visit Fort Worth Texas and you can see the longhorn cattle, watch a rodeo, eat some great BBQ, and meet some of the friendliest people. Just be prepared to drive fast or to stay in the right most lane. 😁

You might be able to visit some locations on certain bases such as museum ships [i.e. the USS Arizona and Missouri at Pearl Harbor or the USS Nautilus at Groton, Connecticut] and the residential areas where the families live; but the actual military areas of the bases are usually off-limits to non-military personnel. There is, however, no restriction against viewing the ships from a different location in the harbor or from a boat [as long as it doesn't get too close].

When I lived in Charleston South Carolina a buddy took me aboard the Destroyer USS. Waynewright. It was an incredible experience. I think they finally used the ship for target practice.

You can go on the USS Lexington here in Texas which is an aircraft carrier and i recommend going on the badest WW2 battelship, the USS New Jersey which is an iowa class. The battleship is huge compared to any other. Its top tier 👌

I grew up in San Diego (my dad was the Captain of a cargo landing ship (cargo and Marines landing ship). With my dependent ID I could access the base there any time I wanted, but to get to a question you asked earlier, no, you cannot just drive onto the base and walk around looking at the ships. You would have to have special permission and get a pass (not easy for a regular US citizen, nearly impossible for a foreigner). The one thing is, the base is so large you see two, maybe three ships and cannot see anything else due to how massive the ships are when you are close to them. For 18 years I had access to Naval Base San Diego and watched my dad leave for his 6 month to a year tour on the ship. Lining up on the "rails" is a ceremony to say goodbye or hello if they are coming back from the tour. Being a Navy Brat had its perks, but it got lonely for a dad's company when he's always out to sea. It was especially hard on my mom.

I live near the Norfolk Naval Base, though I'm ex-Army (Go Army! Beat Navy!!), before 9/11 you could go on base. As a Vet, I can get on with my Veterans ID for Commissary and Exchange access, but I don't know if civilians can or not, though. I doubt you'll come to Hampton Roads, but if by chance you were in this area, you could do a couple of things like tour a Battle Ship (the USS Wisconsin) and you could take a dinner or lunch cruise past the naval base where you could see all of the ships from the deck of the cruise ship (the Spirit of Norfolk). I've done that 4 or 5 times.

Norfolk has more personnel & ships but San Diego & Coronado should be combined because they are in the same city. Coronado is just across the bay. The combined personnel is 75K but land area blows the others off the ranking w a combo 59K acres. My Father was a career Navy man and was stationed at 4 of these top ten. Including Norfolk. And yes, it's big!😮

When I was in the US Army in the 1980s, no beards at all. You could have a tiny moustache as long as it didn't pass the corners of your lips or touch your upper lip. Today, my son is in the Navy and yes, full facial hair is now authorized.

thanks for your reaction to our Military i'm a Retired Army Veteran 74-96 i was a MP a Tank Cmdr and in a Psyop Unit Tactical you brought up about the unshaven troops those troops are part of the Special Operation Command which is made up of different units as Psyop is one of them we were on the front line sometimes with a security detail

You would need a reason to go on the base and a base pass, for some others you would need clearance.

Growing up in the 70's thats how neighborhoods were here in the US. Kids were always outside in good weather, and they always had some parents watching the kids goofing off and making sure they were safe and if need got a talking to. But now you don't even go near anyone's kid unless it's life or death.

If you visit the US, you can visit battleship museum ships at Boston (USS Massachusetts), Philadelphia (USS New Jersey), Houston (USS Texas), Wilmington NC (USS North Carolina), Mobile (USS Alabama), Los Angeles (USS Iowa), Norfolk (USS Wisconsin), and Honolulu (USS Missouri). The WW2 Essex-class aircraft carriers USS Lexington, USS Hornet, USS Yorktown, and USS Intrepid; and the Midway-class USS Midway are also museum ships in various places

I wonder if they talk about US Navy base Lakehurst in NJ, its next to air force Mcguire and Fort Dix Army base in new jersey. I been on all 3. My grandfather was a captain in Navy and his brother was an admiral. They train tanks, and apache helicopters at Fort Dix and Lakehurst is where the hindenburg went down.

What's funny Naval Station Coranado is located a stones throw from Naval Station San Diego on the side of the harbor. 31 year vet in the Army, Navy and Airforce. Exposed to a wide variety the military had to offer. From aviation (ATC), to submarines(STS), to finally, transitioning to Space Command as I left the Air Nationa Guard(Air Force Reserve). Will always remember dive school at Coranado training with Marine Recon.

Camp Pendleton is a Marine Base in Southern California. And is 125,000 acres. Coronado Naval Base is just up the highway in San Diego California. Anyway, great video. Looking forward to the next one. 🤠👍🇨🇱

I live near NAS Jacksonville...Mayport is also here, we actually had 3 bases here, the other was called Cecil Field but they shut it down in 1999. Jacksonville Florida is actually the largest city in square miles in the lower 48 States.

Naval Base Coronado is across the bay from Naval Base San Diego. I used to live on Coronado "island" (it's not truly an island, but they call it such). All you do is cross a bridge (the Coronado Bay Bridge) and you are in San Diego.

The Aircraft carrier is way way bigger than it looks on camera, I was at the shipyard in Newports News Va. when they finished repair on the front right side after hitting an under water mine, standing in the crowd while they celebrate by breaking a bottle of Champagne front of the ship, they had to use a lift to get a little higher, they people standing on the Aircraft carrier's deck look like ants.

My favorite military aircraft is the AC-130 you should check it. There are decommissioned submarines you can go into. There is still a sub here in Pittsburgh.

Jono, there are fly alongs where you get strapped into the back seat of an appropriate fighter jet, and the pilot just does his thing. Complete with barf bags. Mayport is in my neighborhood as well...

So in october on the first weekend there is Fleet week in San Fransisco and San Diego and you can watch the fleet parade, see ships and watch the blue angels fly over the city and do stunts.

18:00 They used to have tours on the bases and on ships but not since 9/11 they don't do that anymore. But as some say, there are places that act as museums were you can visit different ships. Like New York City has a ship and other of the larger cities may have something.

Some of the soldiers, sailors, and airmen have shaving profiles, and the other ones are in SFOC. If you get to visit the U.S., there is aircraft carrier in NYC inwhich you can go on and the have aircraft on board. The USS INTREPID sea & air museum. If you go south, there is another museum aircraft carrier from WWII at Patriots Point in Charleston, SC. There you will see the USS YORKTOWN. If you make it to the west coast of in San Diego, CA. You can tour the USS MIDWAY aircraft carrier with aircraft and other attractions. There are other museum ships around the country that you can visit throughout the U.S. I hope this helps

If you visit the US in NY you can visit the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier that was decommissioned in 1974. It also has several different types of aircraft you can look at.

Jono, you have remember that many of the towns and cities were built around the bases. And yes those acreage numbers were absolutely correct. Military bases are literally small cities.

You can board the USS Intrepid in New York City. It’s a huge aircraft carrier converted into a museum.

My information is dated when I got out of the USN in 1987. If you drive up to the main gate of the base ask the information on if they have tours, the do have ships you can tour. Please don't fear them they are there to help.

They are ranking these by personnel at the bases, so while they all have a lot of land area, more personnel is not exactly indicative of more size. Especially since some are older and cities have grown around the base limiting expansion in more recent decades, and some have functions like firing ranges or airports that necessitate more land area than others.

Naval station norfolk has tours you can purchase. There is also the USS Wisconsin in down town as a museum

There are 5 aircraft carrier museum ships spread around the US, in Texas, California (2), New York and South Carolina. You can visit them, and walk around inside on guided tours. All but the _USS Midway_ fought in WW2; _Midway_ was the lead ship of a new class, that was launched in 1945...She last fought in Desert Storm, and is the closest thing the _USS Gerald R. Ford_ that you can get aboard.

Also, Coronado really _is_ 57,000 acres (230sqkm, or c.90 sqmi) but it is REALLY spread out. Marine Base Camp Pendleton, to the north, is about 51,000 hectares, but is relatively compact, compared to Coronado.

I lived around 5 miles from NAS Jacksonville for 18 years and the base is huge you can go on some bases if you're with military personnel but its very restricted as to where you can go

You would only get onto the actual base if you have a pass from someone on the base who would have had to get clearance for you.... but even going to Norfolk, you will see the fleet in the water!!

Family members can go on board with some restrictions. There are floating museums of decommissioned ships. Get with the naval (or air force, army, marine) base to see what can be arranged. There is public access to at least some of the bases. Getting onboard involves trip hazards, bell ringers, and other tight space dangers. I would say 'hitting the head' but that is something else completely in the navy. Even an aircraft carrier has confined spaces. The sailing ship USS Constitution is still an commission ship that you can visit anytime they are opened. I was launched 1797 or 98 something like that. And is a Frigate. Most federal museums are free but the Constitution has a small fee.

I live across Sinclair Inlet, part of Puget Sound, from Naval Base Kitsap (Bremerton), which is the command home of the Pacific Northwest fleet and home port of the aircraft carrier Nimitz and three nuclear powered submarines, the Connecticut, Chicago and Key West, the last two are currently in “stand down” or reserve status plus the Puget Sound Intermediate Maintenance Facility and Shipyard. It’s located on the Kitsap Peninsula and you do have to have ID to enter the base. There is a museum ship, the USS Turner Joy near the shipyard. The same with the nearby Bangor Sub base which is currently home to twelve submarines, and Whidbey Island Naval airbase. NAS Whidbey Island is the premier naval aviation installation in the Pacific Northwest and home of all Navy tactical electronic attack squadrons flying the EA-18G Growler. This includes eight Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance squadrons flying the P-3 Orion, P-8 Poseidon and EP-3E Aries. Naval Station Everett, just north of Seattle is the home port of four guided missile destroyers.

When my dad was in the US Navy they gave recruits 2 weeks to attempt to grow a beard if the sailor wanted too, if they couldn't they had to be clean shaven.

No, you cannot access the bases! But if you go to San Diego, CA you can do a SD, CA Harbor tour and see the ships of the Pacific Fleet, from the water, from afar.

And once your in, depedning on how you make it look, i was in Navy and we had officers with mustache and the spec ops dudes had beards. When in training and boot camp, we all had to be clean shaven everyday

I live in Norfolk VA there's a museum where you can see the old carrier but if you go on this bridge tunnel you can see them. But to get up lose and person you need a badge to get on base I have a DOD badge

We have a naval museum here in Pensacola Fla which is also home to the Navy Blue Angels and there is the USS Orleck in Jacksonville Fla.

You are the nicest couple and family! Don't let the nay-sayers concerning military readiness get under your skin. Humans are imperfect beings and no government will ever change that. This means that thugs will ultimately rise to power from time to time, making the necessity to fight them an unfortunate reality. The danger to humanity is not the concentrated force in the hands of a friendly power like the USA but the idea that peace can be achieved without strength. Capitulation to the demands of thugs and concessions do not bring peace but eventual war.

I never liked the Midway, it was built on a battleship hull. It rolled even in port. When I was on the Midway we got emergency sailing orders to Cambodia. The Captain took us back to Alameda first so that the crew could take care of business, such as their cars parked on the pier. I was discharged from the Navy while we were still at sea. So I went up on the Islsnd and watched as we passed under the golden gate. They had to remove 10 ft of the mast to pass under it at low tide.

The ww2 sub USS Batfish is docked in Muskogee Oklahoma. There is also a ship in Houston Texas.

You cannot go on the bases, especially as non-citizens. However, there are several museum ships open to all. For example, we toured the US North Carolina, a WWII full-size battleship operating as a floating museum.

Non citizens are able to get on bases. It depends on the base and command at the time. Usually you just need a DoD escort

The best way to see these super large naval bases is just to take a harbor tour. The tour boats won't get next to the naval ships, for security reasons, but if you are within 200 yards of an aircraft carrier with a 4 acre flight deck....you get it. In addition, there are 11 battleships that are museum ships, as well as 5 aircraft carrier museum ships and an entire flotilla of cruisers, destroyers, submarines and support ships scattered around the country that are museum ships. Finally, there is a German U Boat in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

If you have not already. USS intrepid is an amazing naval museum on the actual carrier. Not as big is the modern ones but it's massive and has lots of amazing stuff. You'll get a scale for how big you everything is. The planes specifically were tough to wrap my head around Edit. It is in new york

In the US a beard is usually going to be special forces or civilian. There are some instances where those of certain religions are allowed to, however this is exceedingly rare. The brother of a buddy I served with is a Norse Pagan and is one of the few allowed to have a beard. Beards are not normally allowed in the military because of professional appearance and concerns of getting a good seal on gas masks in a chemical environment.

There are plenty of decommissioned military ships that you can go on. One, the USS Alabama (battle ship) is in Mobile Alabama. There's also a ww 2 captured German U boat and a B52 bomber. There may be more now, it's been 30 or more years since I've been.

As a military brat who grew up on bases, if you see military personnel unshaven they are most likely part of a special operations group (green beret, navy seals, military intelligence, etc). If they are operating in theatres where facial hair is part of the indigenous culture, then special operations soldiers are allowed to wear facial hair.

The U.S. military will somrtimes give tours of certian vehicles. But they're usually very tight and you dont see too much cause alot of stuff is somewhat classified. So you can see them sometimes. But it ain't easy and it isnt in depth.
