We have been planning our trip to America some time now and it's good to prepare so we thought we would check out The DON'Ts Of Visiting America to try and guide us in the right direction. Jono is very happy with the no touching one as he gets very edgy when strangers get too close.

Texan here. Dont freak out when we hold the door open for you. Even if you are quite a distance away, a lot of us will still make sure to hold the door open for the person behind us, especially if a lady is amongst the crowd. Dont feel rushed, or weird, a simple thank you will do. Also, if I have the door held open for me and the place we are entering has a line, i always stop to let the person who held the door open for me get in the line first. Its just the gentlemanly thing to do.

Another Texas here, along the border with Mexico, you will find young Hispanic people hold the door, encouraged by their elders. When a man holds a door for me, a 79 yo woman, and there is an inside door, I really enjoy holding the inside door for the man. He is usually so surprised. Yes, many hotels do not have a thirteenth floor, because it is considered bad luck. We all know that the fourteenth floor really is the thirteenth floor, but labeling it with the number fourteen makes many people feel better!🙃 About renting a vehicle here, remember we drive on the right side of the road, and oncoming traffic is on the left side. When I visited England and Scotland many years ago, I drove around Scotland. Luckily, there was little traffic on my first day, but even when I was a bit more comfortable with driving on the wrong side of the road, when my car and an oncoming car met on the frequently one lane “roads,” one of us would have to back up to a siding, where two cars could pass. I found that almost as unnerving as trying to remember to look to my right first, then my left. In America, we look to our left, and then to our right to cross a road. A number of times I was saved by other pedestrians when I looked in the wrong direction first, thought the road was clear, and started to cross. Scary! But mostly, you will find Americans to be glad to help you, often asking if you need help, and then asking where you are from. We are very proud of our country, and most of us are delighted to have folks from other countries visit us, and see just how diverse America is. Hope you can make the trip one day. Happy New Year from the southmost tip of Texas, Brownsville.

I'm from Mississippi and was visiting someone in Maryland when I was 16yo (by myself). I was going to get on the subway and stopped to let the guy next to me open the door and he did, then walked through it and absolutely did not hold it. Lol I was so embarrassed. I was just so used to holding the door for others and having others hold the door for me that it was like a reflex. Damn yankees.

70 yr old Texan here. About RVs, if you get a large one you can expect to get about 7 miles per gallon. RV parks can run about $45 per night. An RV can be an expensive option. I might suggest you rent a van or minivan and sleep in motels. You will also get much better gas mileage. See my next comment.
@katiemcteague
@katiemcteague 5 ай бұрын
I would also add to think about where you’re going and whether an RV is going to be easy to manage on the roads and if you have to park it somewhere. You just can’t park an RV any old place. It’ll be awkward in cities or in congested areas. RVs are best for the wide open spaces and routes that have plenty of RV parks. Don’t forget to check driving rules as they can vary from state to state and make sure you have the right licensing to drive an RV. RV license requirements vary widely. Just a few extra thoughts.

Literally my thoughts as well. Also Texan here, only ever rented RVs to go camping in the wilderness. They are not for major cities and many places will tow if you attempt to park overnight, so you really need routes with dedicated RV parks, which, of course, aren't free. I'd say for the trip these guys seem to be planning, a large SUV and staying at some cheap airbnbs or hotels just outside the major metro areas might do them well.

Definitely stay at a hotel that's not too expensive. Make sure it has free breakfast.. nothing fancy, just rolls, cereal, fruit, juice, coffee.. (as long as you're not rude about it you usually can take a bunch up to the room if you're a family), and I always slip a banana, or yogurt for later.. Coffee!!! Then you can go to the tourist areas to see things and plan on a Late Lunch or early dinner that you really love. For us we always plan on one meal out a day after filling up with the early free breakfast. You save money. If money means nothing to you then go for the expensive breakfasts and try DINERS,,, Diners always have the best breakfast food, good home cooking

Also, I have an additional don't for you. If you go to a national park don't think that you can do just whatever you want. The rules of the park are there for your protection, not just from animals but also from geological features that might be dangerous. So don't try to pet the grizzly bears, don't step off the paths to get a better picture of the geysers, don't club over the fences so you can sit on the edge of the grand canyon, and don't leave trash, graffiti, or anything else that might destroy the beauty of the park.

The biggest don't--don't worry. By-and-large, Americans are very friendly and accommodating. If you happen to commit a faux paus, just identify yourself as a foreigner and you'll likely find you'll not only be forgiven but embraced and questioned about where you're from, and very likely invited to a family dinner so they can learn more about you. Americans love to meet people from other countries and hear of their home and experiences.

Instead of an RV, I'd recommend just renting a huge SUV and staying in hotels. It will probably be cheaper. And it will be 100x easier to get around. RVs are big and unwieldy even for US roads. Many people with RVs in the US tow a car behind them because of how cumbersome the RVs can be. When I was younger, I used to drive from Chicago to Orlando straight through, just stopping for gas, food, and bathrooms. I'm getting too old for that now. I can drive from Oklahoma to Orlando straight through in an emergency now. But I'm so wiped out when I get there that I lose the day sleeping anyway. So we stop half way to spend the night now. I once drove from Los Angeles to Orlando with my mother. Taking turns driving and sleeping at night, it took us five days. Some places charge for things like chips and salsa. They consider it an appetizer. Other places include it for free like he said. It's totally acceptable socially to just ask the waitress what's included and what isn't. They'll hear your accent and know you're foreign. Any educated person in the US is going to be familiar with the metric system. But they'll probably be more comfortable with imperial. Gas here in Oklahoma is $2.39 a gallon at the moment. Most places in the US will be a little higher. In the major cities it could be much more.

I had also warned my family about the illegals and what to watch out for so they will not become victims. I'm not saying all are bad, but you need to know how to spot the bad. I miss going up there to enjoy all the beauty, rain, family time, fishing, seafood, cooking outdoors a lot, and just driving around on the back roads to see the hidden beauty. I wonder if the two houses my Dad & his parents lived in are still there. The last time I was there, some people were restoring the house my grandfather and his brother built in Salmon Creek. I hope your state will get straightened out. May God Bless & Protect you all!

He is crazy. Eating out is very expensive here. And I only tip if the service is good. The better the service the better the tip. I have tipped as much as 50% and as little as nothing. And same time as food prices are going up quality of service seems to be going down.

Hi from New York. I recently seen Exxon mobile gas station selling $3.07 per gallon. Thats 3.79 liters for € 2.81 converted. But some other gas stations go around $3.50 per gallon. So around $3 to - $3.75 per gallon. In New York.

Yes, as he is telling the truth, when you're in. Bigger cities like I'm from New York, so yes, it's not really wise to have a car here because public transportation is key. And you can get around just fine without it. But smaller cities or especially even in the south yes

Canadians regularly go to Florida during the winter. It is a 24 hour drive from Toronto to Orlando. I will usually drive 16 hours to Charlotte then another 8 to Orlando. I regularly drive to Montreal from Toronto , spend the day with my daughter and return home on the same day. 4.5 hours from Toronto to Montreal. Keep in mind Canada 🇨🇦 is larger the U.S. The province I live n makes Texas look like a little boy.

Gas prices also vary from region to region and gas station to gas station. I highly recommend getting an app like gas buddy if you rent a car. I live in Michigan and the last time I got gas it was around like $2.65/a gallon for regular I believe.
