Graham Greene has risen quickly through the ranks of my bookshelves to become one of my favourite authors. My first introduction to Greene's writings was a Penguin paperback copy of *Doctor Fischer of Geneva* from the 80s that I chanced upon in a local market. Since then, I've been building up a Greene collection that I'm quite proud of. Why do I love him? I'm not even totally sure of that myself. He is, of course, a terrific storyteller; his plotting is elegant and perfectly paced; his vivid descriptions of foreign locales are the mark of somebody who really knew those places; each of his characters are deeply, tragically human. But perhaps for me, my love for his novels stems from how personal they are. Before his death, Greene said, "I am my books", and I (arrogantly, perhaps) know what he means by that. By reading his books, I feel I've learned more about this brilliant, troubled man than any 1000-page biography could have told me. As for my favourite? It's difficult to say. I incline more to his later work (The Honorary Consul, The Human Factor, etc.) than his earlier ones, but that's partly due to the fact that I haven't read many of his pre-1950s novels. Excellent video! If I had that collection, I'd be so inclined to read them all, but equally terrified if I damaged one! I've shared this on Reddit with r/GrahamGreene, a new Greene-centered subreddit that I also run. Spread the word!

I have not read any Graham Greene having just discovered the world of vintage paperback but Our Man in Havana would be something I would love to read based on the title alone due to my love of Cuba and their cigars! 😊

Greene has fared relatively well with film adaptations of his works, besides the obvious classics THE THIRD MAN and THE FALLEN IDOL. Though I wouldn’t say they have unconditional praise, I myself think the cinematic adaptations of such novels as OUR MAN IN HAVANA, THE COMEDIANS, THE HUMAN FACTOR and THE QUIET AMERICAN (2002 version) are all worth watching. None may equal their original literary sources, but I find much to enjoy from all of them. Another solid video, Jules, by an author who resides in my Top 5 favorites of all time.

Great video! 3 of those 5 books on offer I've been hunting and those are great editions. The Comedians was one of Alan Moore's inspiration for The Comedian in Watchmen. Thanks for all the great videos!

An interesting read is Tim Butchers' "Chasing the Devil " where he traces Greens steps in West Africa through Journey Without Maps.

Jules, great video and tribute to Greene. I really should read more of his fine books. You fid not show the UK Pocket Book edition of Harry Lime. Quite rare, very cool. I like the Penguin edition with Wells photo cover.

Hi Jules. Are you aware of the existence of the continental paperback editions of Greene's novels, which used Peter Edwards's Library Edition dust jacket illustrations for their covers? Certainly they released The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter - published in 1961 by Heinemann/Nederland N.V. They’re beautiful looking paperbacks.

By all means get ' Doctor Fuscher of Geneva ' Greenne has some " amoral" , characters , yet we see ourselves in them , sometimes . Also get ' Travels With My Aunt ' . I am told ' The Human Factor ' is fine . I have never read it , have you ? Thanks and bye .

No, but most in the UK were published by Albatross and Penguin and I've pretty much got them all. Check those videos out.👍

I like to have a brief synopsis of the story and the Penguin cover blurb is usually pretty decent. I believe it helps viewers who have never read the author to get an idea about the book.
