Graham Norton has been named Attitude’s Person of the Year, and leader of this year’s Attitude 101, empowered by Bentley.
Speaking at an event at London’s Rosewood Hotel on Friday 16 February, the Drag Race UK host referenced his long-standing relationship with Attitude, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. He also commented on how the media's LGBTQ+ narrative and the way the community is treated hasn't necessarily improved over the years.
Attitude is the UK and Europe's biggest-selling LGBTQ magazine.

Growing up, there were 2 types of gay representation on tv- the ridiculous & the conformist. Then along came Graham Norton, Russell T Davies, Pride, then later athletes & pop stars (more than one! How exciting). The needle has moved. The arc of history is long, as they say, but it bends towards justice. Thanks for being part of what bent it, Graham 😜

I mean, look at The Last of Us. the whole third episode as an in depth gay love story is a response to the very hidden and codified queerness in the OG video game which was shunted to the background so as not to trigger the straight male Gamer audience. I think it's brilliant that there are so many creators out there outwardly, openly saying "ay enough is enough, you can't deny these peoples' right to be represented anymore."

@@Novarcharesk Yes, as if I expected them to just magically change. Obviously my predication was wrong, but given the attitude of the time, it seemed reasonable that we would be further along than we are. I fail to see what arrogance has to do with it. As if I claimed "I will fix this issue!" More like overestimating the society I live in. Though, in fairness, I never thought in 2024 people would worship a goat with a human face as a god, but that's a reality too.

The situation is completely different now from what it was thirty years ago. Thirty years ago, people were, quite rightly, fighting for same-sex relationships to be accepted and supported in the same way that opposite-sex relationships were. In the intervening thirty years, people fought for an equalisation of the age of consent. This battle was won in the year 2001. People fought for same-sex marriage, and they received civil partnerships in 2005 and actual marriage in 2014. In between, the Equality Act 2010 enshrined in law that people could not be discriminated against in the provision of services and public functions on the grounds of their sexual orientation. So by about ten years ago, the major legal battles for legal recognition for same-sex relationships between consenting adults had been won. Of course, there was still prejudice and discrimination, but this was no longer supported by the state, and if we'd left it there, people would have just got used to things and things would have just continued to get better for people in such relationships. Instead, many activists took a bizarre, 120° turn (not a typo), repurposing the organisations that had helped to propel the successes of the gay rights movement for and hijacking the good will of their supporters, tacking on unrelated and even opposing ideas and using the device of an ever-expanding initialism to mislead people into thinking that this was all really just a continuation of the same sort of thing. It was no longer enough to recognise that an effeminate boy might be a nascent homosexual and to accept and support him for what he was. We now had to pretend that he might actually be a girl, and maybe put him on hormone blockers. It was no longer enough to recognise that an adolescent girl who liked girls but was uncomfortable with her developing body was a lesbian who needed mental health support. We now had to pretend that she was actually a straight boy, and off with her breasts! _Nobody_ should be surprised that there has been a huge backlash against this. It has almost _nothing_ to do with old-school homophobia, and almost everything to do with the hijacking of a decent movement to push for something retrogressive and deeply harmful.

I’m a 50+ yo Doctor in the US and part of LGBTQ community. Recently invited to a virtual “Personal story telling” of LGBTQ physicians by the head of DEI one of a largest US Physicians Organization. I heard stories from beautiful, intelligent young & gay, lesbian doctors about how they were “doing ok but still often still in the closet”, or be secretive. Scared but resilient. How they couldn’t see themselves working in so many American states because of the anti LGBTQ legislation. I was the last to speak. Through tears I paused and said, “I’m probably the oldest one here…and as I look out at all the bright, successful, beautiful faces out there, I am saddened by the fact that now…in 2024…we are still having this discussion.”

Great speech. As he spoke, I thought of the recent story in The Atlantic magazine titled "America's Long Campaign to Erase Gay People Is Itself Being Forgotten." Although some people live by the thought that the past is the past so just forget about it, for this issue it's so important to hold tight to the saying that those who forget history are condemned to repeat it. Some of my fellow countrypeople here in the U.S. are already talking as if some of the country's queer-related history, especially that which is part of the Anglosphere, is a "myth." OUCH! yeah Graham, a list of every Gay in the world would help , straight people have been asking for this for years and are always called homphobic, but it would be nice to know who is Gay and not hiding their identity in the real world., it also says a lot about this lgbtqwatever community who lurk about in the shadows refusing to reveal themselves, what a role model for the younger generation.

It’s the growing lists of letters that go with g and l that push my boundaries a bit. Lists are kind of crucial really? Then you get to see who wrote them too.❤❤ Back in the day, I did feel I fitted and belonged, even though I didn’t have a letter of my own. Now I have got a letter, somehow I still feel more judged and marginalised from within my own list makers? Hard to know even how to have a friendly chat about it in an open forum? Hard now to have a happy chat even at a many lettered event?

Great work Graham - you're awesome. But i wonder if we've muddied the waters too much between gender and sexuality? As a cis gay male - oh lucky me - most of what I see from news outlets these days about our community are stories of trans and non-binary people and (often) their struggles. I'm a strong ally of these people but I don't feel part of this community - is it just me?

The gay community would not exist without the trans community. Who were the most outspoken at pride when the movement was in its infancy? We have the same struggle; bigots hate us for who we are, they won't care which exact flavour of queer we are. Also don't forget that trans ppl are often also gay or bi on top of being trans. Or we think we're homos BEFORE we come out as trans. We have a lot of love & respect for our cis queer counterparts and we need you to be on our side. United we stand, divided the tories win, so to speak. Yes we are not exactly on the same paths in life, but we should all understand that our experiences of bullying, self-doubt and loathing, discrimination, fear for our lives, refusal to hide our true selves - these are things we all share.
@Unknown-ov2kz

@@joycelinlgbtq Beautifully put! I'm just going to add, the arguments are being recycled, so standing with all marginalised communities is how we win. The argument was "gay people could be dangerous to straight people, so they should be excluded or vilified", now it's "trans people could be dangerous to cis people, so they should be excluded or vilified". Obviously they weren't as explicit with the vilified aspect, but the intent was there.

And what about the hate thrown at those who CHOOSE not to live a gay life but choose to identify differently because their core convictions are not defined by sexual desire? So much legislative bullying and vitriol cast at those who experienced a gay life and but then choose differently. Tolerance is not an LGBTQ virtue after all.

So, someone whose conviction is to hide away their true self, lie to themselves, their family, their friends, their (potential) partner and children, because they are ashamed to be honest with themselves - while simultaneously telling the LGBTQIA+ community that being queer is something to be ashamed of...? I have pity for them; not hate. I can only hope they can overcome the social expectations they have conformed to, learn about religious trauma and the damage it does to closeted queer people, and learn to be free of that and be themselves.
@seanswart8102

and there it is - that old hubris - how is it YOU get to decide that i am lying... how do YOU get to decide what is TRUE and most valuable to or about me, whose choice and story is different to your own? I am not lying to anyone, I am quite open and honest about what I experience and what I used to do vs what I do now - I am free to make choices, to choose my actions and behaviors and associations. But you label me deceitful (a liar) and pitiable... Am I allowed to believe that the Creator GOD has the right to define what is fitting or not, and not queer ideology or even a sinner's heart? Do I even have a right to be religious if it contradicts what you believe and want to be true? Do I have the right to believe that not every impulse and desire is good or right or fitting, even if it feels good and easy? It doesn't really matter what set of impulses might have developed in my life after I was born, Jesus did say we must be born again... am I free to choose that or am I still a pitiable liar?@@traceyadixon

@@seanswart8102 Well because most ex-gays contribute to queer oppression by preaching about the sinful lifestyle of homosexuality, while actually just being bisexuals who simply choose to ignore their attraction to one gender. Because your straight peers parade you around as some success story proving the inherent immorality of queerness, rather than proving the effectiveness of their brainwashing and psychological torture. Because no I don't think it's right or normal to be poisoned by man-made religion into suppressing your natural and harmless orientation. Just yesterday my East German colleagues were talking about how LGBTQ stuff is pushed everywhere in the media as if it was this great burden to bear and they are sick of it. 'It's so forced and annoying' I had to speak up and say it's a pretty small inconvenience for them to see a couple of Netflix shows (THEY DON'T HAVE TO WATCH) depicting gay and trans people, in comparison to the hatred, abuse and violence the community used to meet or the sky high levels of suicide. If some more media coverage helps people feel more welcome to the point that others become bored of the whole topic...good. That's definitely an improvement over hate and division.

I'm gonna be that guy. I love Graham, he's a great man, but I think it's a bit disingenuous to think that the needle hasn't moved at all these last 3 decades. It has. Overwhelmingly. But there's a bit of a survival bias going on. If you're LGBT and happen to have lead a life with no discrimination and full love and acceptance of your friends and family, then there's not much reason to share your story, is there? Even if you did, it's not like most people would care. It sounds cold, but people don't like stories with no drama. So the people who still suffer from bullying and discrimination will naturally be the stories most will comment on. That being said, I do also think that the needle has been moving in the opposite direction these last 5 or so years, and the LGBT movement itself partially responsible for it. For a very simple reason: The LGBT movement of today is completely ANTI-THETICAL to the one that proceeded it in the 20th century. The old message was clear: "We're not monsters, we don't want to corrupt anyone's kids, we don't want to invade every space, we don't want to impose our lifestyle on anyone else, we don't want to push for legislation other than gay marriage, we just want to be left alone and live in peace without fear of persecution." Can we say with confidence that this is still the message? Because I don't think it is. The LGBT movement of today IS trying to influence people's kids, the LGBT movement of today IS trying to invade every space (from education, entertainment, politics, business and everything in between), the LGBT movement of today IS trying to push legislation that enforces arbitrary language, the LGBT movement of today IS trying to make excuses for boys being in girls' locker rooms. I could go on. When you attack people's children, their free speech, when you make excuses for biological men destroying the careers of female athletes... yeah, you're going to attract people's ire. To be clear, none of the above justify any physical or mental abuse against LGBT people, but the recent pushback doesn't stem from nothing. Either the movement starts taking responsibility, or this is just going to get worse, and I'd rather it doesn't.
