If you are new to shooting film photography, thrifting your first 35mm film camera can be rather challenging. If you don't know what to look for, it's difficult to know whether a camera you are looking at actually works. Granted there is no way to know without a doubt until you develop the first roll of film from it, but these 5 tips will greatly increase your chances of thrifting your first film camera that actually works and works well. what cameras have you all seen while thrifting? let me know in the comments below!
How to load/shoot your first roll of film:

Buying from eBay, I always go for models that have been cleaned, lubricated and calibrated (adjusted) and that have new light seals fitted. They'll cost a bit more, but there's peace of mind. I've recently bought three Ricoh SLRs (KR5, KR10 and KR10 Super). Not the most expensive or desirable even when new, but more than adequate for my needs. Because of the Pentax K mount Ricoh uses, I've got decent Pentax lenses for them too.

Very true. People don’t want to dish out more but it does give a lot of peace of mind. And yes if you know your stuff it doesn’t really matter what body you have just knowing how to use it and having decent glass is more important

I appreciate your work on this channel. Love the quality and FX (wow!) of your videos. Keep going! I just started my journey to analog photography with Canon QL17. Zorki 4 with the Jupiter 3 lens is next on my wish list and the list is growing everyday :) It is so nice to see there are still people loving old cameras.

Kodersky thanks man! Lots to come. The QL is a solid place to start. And those Jupiter lenses can be really cool. Haha careful, it can get out of hand quickly. And yeah it’s good to see it continue to come back

I have been buying cameras from thrift stores for many years and I've literally but hundreds of them. I learned the hard way early on to do exactly what you just covered. These days I have it down to a science and can determine within 5 minutes or less if a camera is worth my time. That being said, this is great advice for anyone looking to pick up a film camera from a thrift shop. There's a lot of broken trash out there, but when you find those gems it is a thing of beauty.

Ha thanks! I’m sure you have a very streamlined process. Like you said they’re is a lot of great stuff and a lot of garbage. Just have to determine what’s what and if it’s worth it.

I have been thrifting cameras for about 2 years. It’s getting harder and hader to find good cameras for a good price these days. A lot of buyers are pushing the price higher. Some of the thrift stores even have an eBay account to try to sell their camera there first. But great video nonetheless.
@graham_white
@graham_white 4 жыл бұрын
completely agree, it is getting harder and harder. that's why I made sure to mention checking eBay prices. A lot of sellers simply throw out the highest price they see listed even if its for a mint model as apposed to one that hasn't even been tested. or just see that its a film camera and jack up the price since the interest is growing. even though they may have a much less desirable model and triple the price. Plus it's just so simple to look up a camera and get prices that it's hard to find bargains or convince people that what they have isn't the same as what they looked up. Thanks for the input!

Sadly we don’t have many thrift stores around my area. So any film camera purchases for me are either Facebook marketplace, Let Go or EBay. I did get my Yashica FX-2 off of Etsy. The only thing I can say about that is the I have get some glue to fix the peeling of the skin. I do think Etsy is expensive.

Etsy is way overpriced. I’ve found a lot of good deals on OfferUp, let go and Facebook market though.

I just love all the eBay listings where the only description the seller gives is "used" and this is from guys selling quite a few cameras. To me this is shady seller code for "not working" or "has issues". Or when I ask a seller about a "working fine" camera and ask about the meter only to be told probably needs a new battery BUT, the battery compartment door is corroded shut and I can even open it....hmm, shouldn't that be in the description? Crap shoot but sometimes I get lucky, or if I ask more than one question get told...."this is probably not the camera, lens, whatever, for you", which is again code for "has issues" or "not working" or please don't bid on my item even though my description said ask questions.
@graham_white
@graham_white 3 жыл бұрын
Lolol so true. Unless the description labels each part as working and is very descriptive or says it just had a complete CLA then assume there is some sort of issue with it to be safe..., even if it does say complete CLA I prepare for the worst. And I usually only buy ones that say you can return it if not satisfied

Damn, wish I’d found this video earlier. Bought an AE-1P with a 50 f1.8 for $295 off of Carousell (my country’s local EBay equivalent). Compared it to EBay, stuff’s sold for ~$100 including shipping. Guess I got ripped off but thanks for the tip! Hope I burn a hole in my pocket next time.

Any ideas what manual setting I should use for photographing someone with smoke bombs on a film camera ?!?
@graham_white
@graham_white 3 жыл бұрын
hmm interesting. I mean its going to vary depending on your surroundings and lighting. I would get a meter reading of the subject before using the smoke bomb just cause Im not sure how the camera will react. but it shouldn't affect the lighting that much. If anything just overexpose 1 stop to make up for whatever darkness/shadows the smoke bomb creates.

in the 12 years of going to my local salvation army at (least 1 day a month) I have seen 2 cameras that were not knockoff point and shoots and I bought both of them. A Sony 8mm camcorder and a Minolta xg-7, I am not exaggerating when I say that. I have never seen anything close to decent, not even ok point and shoots. I don't know if I just have scalpers in my area or if people are smart enough to check ebay before donating.

Who knows. I’ve never had good luck at Salvation Army. One of my local thrift stores gets there stuff from like auctions in nyc so that helps. Another does storage units. Your area and the volume play a big part. Also I go on the days they put out new merchandise otherwise it’s gone quickly
