A lecture on Questionnaire Design by Graham R Gibbs taken from a series on research methods and research design given to masters (graduate) students at the University of Huddersfield. This is part 3 of three, and looks at a selection of ways of collecting information about ratings and then examines some of the key ways that scales are constructed and used.

Guttman scale: *survey items have binary answers (YES, NO) *are ranked in order *individual who agrees with one item also agrees with all the items ranked lower Thurstone scale: *3 different methods of constructing scale values: method of equal-appearing intervals, method of successive intervals and method of paired comparisons *based on a large set of candidate statements (100+) *participants (judges) rate each statement on a 1-to-11 scale (1-least favorable to the concept; 11-most favorable) (method: EAI) *analysing the data (median, interquartile range) and selecting items that have medians 1-11 and have small interquartile ranges *items have binary answers Likert scale

Mojca, thanks for these further details of the Guttman and Thurstone scales. I did skate over them rather quickly in the lecture - trying to make up time. The book I've always used as a reference on this is Oppenheim, A.N. (2000). Questionnaire Design, Interviewing and Attitude Measurement. London: Continuum International Publishing Group.
