Starring: Ashok Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Mehmood, Rajshree, Nirupa Roy, Lalita Pawar, Shubha Khote, Sudesh Kumar.
Director: Kishore Sahu, Producer: S.S. Vasan
Synopsis: Harishchandra Khanna lives a wealthy lifestyle with his wife, Maya, seven daughters, and one son. His eldest daughter has been married to a young man Gopal. Harish is by profession a motor mechanic and runs his own thriving business left to him by his father-in-law. Harish only comes home on Friday evening, and leaves for work early on Monday morning. His wife, widowed sister, and nephew, Jaggu, are used to his being away for 4 days. He is delighted when he finds out that he is going to be the father of his 9th child. shortly after the birth, Harish finds out that his daughters, Kamini and Kiran, are in love with Ravinder and Mohan respectively. While Ravinder is a college professor, who lives with his station master dad, Ram Swarup; Mohan is the only son of the college principal. Harish also finds out that his nephew, Jaggu, is in love with Rekha, who is Ram's daughter. He decides to finalize all three marriages and invites all young men and woman, along with their respective parents to his house. He is delayed in reaching home but when he does get home he finds the entire Khanna family troubled and anxious. They are in such a state as they have just welcomed in their home a 15 year old lad, Sunder, who claims that Harish is his father, who spends time with them in Delhi from Mondays to Thursdays. With this shattering news, Harish must now come to terms with his hidden second marriage and family, and possibly end losing this family.

Kya movie hai, kya kaam kiya hai sabhi kalakaro ne. Maya ke pita ka wo dard jis tarah se unhone screen per utara hai, next level. इतना जीवंत अभिनय और कितनी प्यारी कहानी। कोई lapse नही है मूवी में. बहुत बहुत उम्दा. अंत में बुआ का कहना की मैं जा रही हूं बच्चो को लेने , बेचारे वहां अकेले है, ये ममता को उच्च शिखर तक ले जाता है, आज लोग अपने सगे भाई बहन के बच्चो को भी उतना प्यार नही कर पाते। क्या लोग थे उस जमाने में, कितना प्यार अपनत्व था। आखिरी में गला रूंध गया, आंखे नम हो गई। मन किया जोर से रोया जाए। उस तड़प को बाहर निकाल जाने दूं, जो आज अंदर तक बस गई है। हम 90's के लोगो ने भी कुछ हद तक उस प्यार और अपनत्व को महसूस किया है। पर आज सब खो गया है खतम हो गया है। वो प्यार ना दे पा रहे है और न किसी से मिल रहा है। मैं, मेरी पत्नी और मेरे बच्चे से ही मतलब बाकी सभी रिश्ते फॉर्मेलिटी के हो गए है। ये एकाकी जीवन हमें कहां ले जाएगा पता नहीं।

Extoling woman (Maya's) sacrifice, which in fact was laden with her love for her sister. Real sacrifice was of Harish (Ashok Kumar). But the film maker seem to have blinded himself from that. Man's sacrifice

Watching almost after 55 years.As a school going ,had to convince mother to give permission to watch it and promoting to score well in exams,which never happened ,but on the plea it being a family movie managed to watch it .Ticket cost a Athanni ! Even today vividly remember it!Glad thought of watching it as have stopped watching tv,stopped twitter.What a relief and what a joy.!

In 1966 this film was remake in Tamil by the same Gemini Production with Nadigar Thilgam Sivaji Ganesan Sowkar Janaki Manimala Nagesh etc.in the name of Motor Sundarampillai which was a master hit of S.S.Vasan on those days.Jayalalitha Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu played as one of a daughters of Sivaji Ganesan in this film which is a remarkable event 👌😃

Got to say this....subtly establishing how capable he can gradually become evident; 55:14, before and beyond! Further, not fuming that 57:05 happened is a learning point! And how the accidental visual tension for the 1:01:29 scenario stems up was also natural, including how they agreed with one another and all those mannerisms, demeanor, and sparkling eyes, which consistently apply to other scenes. Details that effectively signify the characterization of every possible role in the surrounding dynamics of how lives could have us sit through the whole experience! So far, so, all good. But something has to go differently in the storyline, right? It is so different that it flips the whole story we thought was ideal. Honestly, this can go on and on for so many other films back then(also those aligning with this one...I mean, this one is way more before than the films I was familiar with), but for this unexpected try today, that seems promising, here's my take on it! A light-hearted but thoughtful one this could (and will!) be. Good film overall! P.S. Well, sometimes, it will, and yes, it did. Something we may or may not like, something we may or may not experience, and just nothing we may or may not understand. Anyway, 1:35:31 shows that this child, who was more firmly sure then, at least visibly, had a part of her heart wishing all to be together. Soft and real. And here's not to deny that volcano he personified from the start. There's something everyone, including us, the viewers, got to know, and the way he emoted, it couldn't be more intriguing and emotionally gripping. And the final scene, particularly 2:31:38, brings me here again because with everything said and felt so far, he traveled so long and couldn't be more humbling and understanding. And what I thought I couldn't deny turned out to be true. All of it put together, in a sequence, may (and would) not really be "realistic" "enough," but the learning points at every possible instant are MAJOR. Once again, as said before, this is a good, great film-older than what I've known and nothing less promising.

This is the original movie. Initially the script was offered to Shivaji Ganesan, but he rejected it. Then, they went to Ashok Kumar and he accepted it. 'Grahasti', starring legendary Dadamoni Ashok Kumar (my favourite actor), was a superhit. After the success of this movie, Shivaji Ganesan changed up his mind and expressed his willingness to act in its Tamil remake. Thus, 'Motor Sunderam Pillai' was a remake of this movie, with Shivaji Ganesan playing Ashok Kumar's role.

Grahasti was the original, made in 1963. Motor Sundaram Pillai was made in 1966.
