Three simple rules will help you in a few hours to learn how to properly sharpen a twist drill for metal on an emery wheel by hand without any additional devices in 1-2 minutes. You don't need special skills and talents for this, you just need to follow these rules and practice a little.

First, thank you so much for sharing and guiding. You're the first guide to explain exactly how to sharpen a drill. And after trying with the sharpening according to your explanation everything worked out and succeeded. After watching a lot of videos I could not figure out exactly how to get the right result. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

As some one who as been sharpening drills for 40 years this is best video I have seen on here. Most are amateurs with not much idea.Only thing I find is that as some one who is left handed i find grinding drills easier than most but difficult to show people as i hold the drill differently to right handers

no, it is not the correct way in fact, it is a terrible way to sharpen your bits to only 50% efficiency and have to regrind them very regularly you might as well buy new bits every time if you are going to sharpen them like this, since you are such an amateur

CONGRADULATION SIR. From all the videos on YOU TUBE on how to sharpen drill bits (I,have watched maybe 50 or more) you are the only one that have the moves that will come only with experience . All the others , have , I would say , beginners ways to sharpen drills . It still does the job " ok" but nothing like the real thing. I'have worked 45 years as a maintenance machinist and ground lots of drill bits. And all the beginners watching , keep on grinding, you will get better. No need to buy expensive machine to do that job.

Thank you! You may not believe me, but I made this video right after I learned how to sharpen drills. And I learned in just half a day after watching a video of an old Russian master from a tool shop (he transferred his videos to Russian KZfaq - Rutub). His name is Viktor Leontyev. Probably later I improved my skill a little more by sharpening a box with fifty dull old drills; I had it lying around since Soviet times.

This is the standard sharpening of drills, as do ordinary workers in the tool shop, plain and simple, just a couple of hours of practice. I am glad that it benefits many people. Manufacturers and youtubers take advantage of their people's ignorance, invent and sell various gadgets (from which there is no sense) to people far from this business. I watched a video of one device (about 50-60 euros), an ordinary person was trying to sharpen a drill. When he showed the result in close-up, I realized: point 3 is not fulfilled there, as in my video, there is no bevel for cutting into the metal. Of course, such a drill will not sharpen, but only warm up, which was shown by the person in his video. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I saved this link. Yes, magnifying glasses are desirable, especially if the drills are of small diameter, I also use that.

As a Fitter and Turner in Oz its how we start to learn but if you look at that lovely demonstration at 5 min which tells a bigger story. If you look behind the cutting face their is a big gap, this needs to be filled but not higher that cutting face, this is what the drill "rests" on in the hole, it stops it from shaking and drilling of center and more importantly biting like a tiger when it breaks through the other side. + their is no need to thin the web on a small drill especially as small as 5mm, look at a new drill they don't come thinned. But for DIY its a great video to get you to start to re sharpen your drills and understand the basic's.

Of all the sharpening method , I like your method most. First , you are the only one who said tip angle is not so important as long as it is symmetrical, and you proved it . Second, without worrying about the tip angle, the rest becomes simple . I had tried your method, and I can get the drill bit to drill again in less than 5 minutes . Thanks .

Finally a good video that speaks from my heart. You don't need any equipment, just a little knowledge and practice. I learned it properly in 1955 and can happily confirm what is shown here. Unfortunately, it is not easy to see that when grinding, a slight rotary movement is carried out in addition to the tilting movement. As already mentioned, the point angle of 118° is not that important. However, chip removal is only more difficult in the case of larger deviations and deeper bores.
@grain8314
@grain8314 3 ай бұрын
No, I don’t do any rotation at all, it’s an unnecessary action. It may have seemed that way in the video, to be honest, it’s very difficult to show in a high-quality manner when shooting a video - the horizontalness of the drill, the edge, maintaining the angle, etc. Yes, I saw in other videos some people rotate, but this is unnecessary - the back surface is naturally rounded in the process of raising the top of the drill.

Good video for beginners! As a machinist/tool and die maker you could not drill D2,A2 or stainless with a 90° angle lol. 118° which is the standard angle struggles and dulls quickly. Anything above stainless is 135° split point. You also peck drill through almost all metal with a HSS drill. I run both HSS and carbide drills.

For whom it may concern. The top of a drill is mostly (or best) 118°. So that when one use a centerdrill or NC drill (for centering) (which has a top angle of 120°) makes that the dril doesn't go full contact on the full lenght of the cutting lip, but does this gradually from center to exterior diameter. Use a sharper top angle when you want to drill plate. Use a larger angle for example for stainless steel. When drilling stainless steel, drag the freshly sharpened lips lightly over the concrete floor, this will deburr the lips, and make it more gentle to cut with.
