Loram Shoulder Ballast Cleaner working on the CE&D sub south of Vincennes, IN. This machine cleans the dirt out of the ballast on the shoulder of the roadbed to allow for good water drainage away from the roadbed. This also helps extend the life of the crossties and the condition of the roadbed to extend the period of time between tamping & regulating the track.

I was wondering what that was and how it worked. That is an interesting concept on how it digs up the ballast with all the dirt and contaminents included, sorts that crap out, and spits its out. It gives the ballast a new life as it is returned to its rightful place and purpose. Very educational. Thank you for providing it.

How do they handle grade crossings? Does one whole train length on either side go uncleaned, or can different components be switched on and off independently?

John Franklin Yes, all railroads use this service to help the roadbed & track stay in good shape. It’s likely to be several years before this track gets the shoulder cleaned again.

If the ballast gets full of mud and other debris is doesn't drain water very well and then the crossties rot and that shortens the life of the ties and makes the rail bumpy.
