Bill Schnee is a musician, music, producer, and audio engineer. He started playing music with he was very young, beginning with training in trumpet, saxophone, and piano In his senior year of high school, Schnee started a band called The LA Teens. After graduating, The LA Teens were signed to Decca Records. The band was ultimately dropped when their singles had little success, but Schnee continued to work on music.
He attended California State Polytechnic Institute, while learning his craft, and even when on to start law school at Loyola University. He took a leave of absence his second semester to continue playing and recording music. During that time, he was hired to work in Richie Polodor’s studio to recording two tracks and some overdubs for Thee Dog Night, and that was his big break.
In 1981, he opened Schnee Studio in North Hollywood. He and his fellow engineers built all of the equipment for the studio, including the discrete recording console and custom tube microphone preamps.
Schnee has worked with some truly legendary artists over the course of his career including Steely Dan, Chicago, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Dire Straits, Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye, and so many more! He has been nominated for a Grammy for the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical 11 times, and has won twice. He has also received over 135 gold and platinum records and has recorded/mixed over 50 Top 20 singles!
Bill Schnee is an incredibly talented producer and engineer and it was so great to talk with him and hear about the amazing albums he has worked on!

Hi Warren, I realize I'm watching this two years on but hope you get this comment. It's one of thanks to you and to just observe Bill is a national treasure. Thank you for preserving Bill's thoughts and stories. I bought his book thanks to an earlier interview. Love it when he signed off, "Cheers, mate!" Sweetheart. Cheers, young man.

What an AMAZING interview to come across, with one of the top engineers in the world! I got to meet Bill Schnee when he was starting out, at a tiny, home-built storefront studio in Glendora, Ca., "Mark Records," owned by Marlin Jones. Jones was a music professor at Azusa Pacific College where I went. Later on Mr. Schnee had his own full professional studio in Hollywood where he did all his amazing work. It was a privilege to know Mr. Schnee, and he is an inspiration! I had a studio myself for a short time, and i have recorded for years and worked with other musicians because of this!

When I was younger I met Bill Schnee! He was working for a small studio in Glendora, California, run by Marlin Jones, a professor at Azusa Pacific College (I went to school there). It was a real hole-in-the-wall place that was "chewing gum and baling wire," or their electrical equivalents. A lot of the equipment was home brewed, literally - a homemade 4-track tape deck and small mixer, built by Mr. Jones, among other things.. Bill Schnee did a fantastic job of engineering records of all kinds. I've never forgotten the times I was able to sit and watch the musicians play and have their sounds captured by Mr. Schnee. I later went into professional (mostly live location recording) myself but it was always things like seeing Bill Schnee work that stayed in my memory

Absolutely brilliant. A man with his hands in so many pies. His story on Marvin's Vulnerable album was fascinating. I bought the album without any proper backstory to it but Bill made sense of it. Nobody talks about Marvin's background arrangements enough, the same with Steely Dan's superb BVs Fagen used to cover up his uncomfortable lead vocal which I and millions loved. I'll look for Bill's book if it's out. Thanks Warren.
