Wow, colour me surprised, but Gran Turismo turned out to be a really solid, entertaining sports drama with great performances and cinematography. Who knew?

Right? Now can we please get a really great adaptation of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, or Tekken? There have been a few that were ok, but none of them really got it, and it would be so painfully easy. Just fight. That's all. Talk less, fight more. Nobody plays any of those games for the cut scenes, I don't understand why every movie tries to make some intriguing plot.

I work at a small theatre which is part of a bigger chain, and despite playing trailers for Gran Turismo our location didn’t end up playing the film. I didn’t even know the film had released until a few days ago. However, the director of the film Neil Blomkamp decided to pay a visit to our theatre and schedule a private screening of his film during his stay in our town. He ended up inviting a few of us employees who had just finished our shifts to watch the movie with him, and I’m definitely glad he did. It‘s a solid underdog story with fast cars and emotional scenes, and having the opportunity to experience it with the man who created the film made it all the more special.

Saw it today with my wife and 2 of our 3 daughters. We enjoyed the hell out of it. The audience cheered at the end scene and gave the movie an excellent round of applause when it was over. So simple, so easy, and yet Hollywood refuses to do these movies. A real shame.

🤔 Hmmm maybe it will be an advantage instead of a setback. People were starting to get tired of going to the cinema and paying that much for boring movies that were all the same since almost a decade. Less and less watchers actually wanted to watch movies on the big screen and prefered to wait for the streaming release. Now that they saw that cinema as such isn't dead and there is a new high coming where it finally pays off again to take in the experience (spiderverse, super mario, puss in boots... all of those turned out to be suprisingly good) maybe they're interested in watching more cinema- movies again in general and GT could benefit from this momentum since the reviews are overwhelmingly positive so far...

There are moments of track drama that is completely unreal and would result in the revoking of some of the drivers licenses. As a GT and Motorsport fan, it was definitely better than I expected it to be - video games are at best a mixed bag when adapted to film. They took some Hollywood license with changing some of Jann's story and even some of the big events in the movie and tracks were morphed or borrowed from elsewhere for the sake of the narrative. Kaz had a nice cameo as well which will be a nice moment for eagle eyed fans - might have been good to see some of the online racing community like Super GT or Jimmy Broadbent featured (perhaps they could have been participating in the virtual races or something). My only criticism of the film is they missed a chance to hit those nostalgia vibes with some of the music from the games. Would have been special to hear 'Just a day' or something played on the big screen with cinema sound!

No preachy political messages, no girlbosses, no tearing down of male characters, no over-use of crap CGI (it was used sparingly in just the right moments), just a good wholesome story that genuinely got me in the feels. My heart started racing at some of the tense moments, I laughed at the jokes and the final conversation with the dad just before the final race legitimately made me tear up (being a father myself I could totally relate to the situation). I really enjoyed the movie, and at one point got a good, genuinely deserved applause from us. That was an unexpected hit

just watched this. I'm blown away. Phenomenal movie. Great acting, intense action and attention to detail. Everything seemed realistic, and they featured so many cars and brands. Even the sponsorship signage at the races was legit. I'm very impressed. Way better than expected.

Saw an advanced screening of this a few weeks ago. Your thoughts are spot on. I was shocked that it had as much drama and seriousness as it did. The "Sonyness" was really heavy handed, and the love plot doesn't really add anything since the real person he is trying to please is his father. Definitely WAY better than I was expecting, which was a shitshow. Sony appears to be leaning on word of mouth for marketing. They have been doing a lot of advanced screenings.

I watched it last week and I was expecting it to be like every other movie in recent years, boring and with some stupidly pushed agenda, but it wasnt, yeah it has Sony and Nissan all over it but it was very enjoyable and the story had flow, it was a very refreshing movie to watch.

Hopefully this opens the door further for Neill blomkamp. He's made many great movies and has some cool concept ideas I think many would enjoy! Wish I could come see you at anime matsuri but had plans to be out of town this weekend. Enjoy Houston Drinker! Well as best as you can in this heat wave lol.

Loved this movie. The story moves along fast. You don’t get a lot of unnecessary scenes. Every actor was perfect for their role. Racing scenes remind me of fast n furious how we see the engines working and the quick gear shifting.

I’d honestly have never experienced a feel good movie like this since Top Gun Maverick. I’d honestly thought that GT would be a like a typical video game movie, trying hard to be like the video game it’s adapted from but ends up falling short. But at the end of the movie, everyone in the theatre I was watching in stood up and gave it a round of applause. My friend even said that they don’t make feel good movies like this anymore. Long may movies like this continue 💪🏼

best part is it 100% based on a true story and the real life story is actually more insane if you can believe it, the movie paints him as the underdog but in real life he was crushing records

Finally a Neil Blompamp movie. I subjectively consider him modern day Paul Verhoeven. Hopefully we will see some more of him

Funny thing is racing teams in real life have already sort of recruited online racers. William Byron who is now winning races in Nascar every season was originally a really good player on iracing and he managed to use the extra exposure to find himself at Hendricks Motorsports one of the winningest teams in Nascar as of today.

I really enjoyed Gran Turismo - I’ve not played it but have wracked up the hours on Forza, F1 and other karting games etc. It was a solid underdog film that has a likeable cast, some pretty genuine romantic scenes and a great bit of heart. The racing scenes are awesome and I had a load of fun with it at the end. Music was great too. Pleasantly surprised and would happily see it again in cinemas
