Thanks Matthew! Another great episode. I concur with your taste preferences and tend to like medium bodied Cabernets nowadays. Can’t say I have had a huge amount of Bordeaux and very hard to find Napa cabs here in Western Australia. I do like a great Margaret River Cabernet and I am happy to live close enough to the region!.. Keep up the great job and look forward to more videos 😊

I love Australian Cabernets and I really tried to get some from Margaret River and Coonawarra for this video, I’m not yet as well-connected with Australian producers yet (my channel depends on samples). I’m a big fan of Xanadu down there along with a slew of others including the blends from Yarra Yering.

Hello ! It’s is impressive how Napa has tunned down and it’s now delivering more balance wines . But at the high end , I always found hard to differentiate the older vintages of Bordeaux and Napa, with the tip being the aromas of fruit on the attack on Napa , and the earthiness on the Bordeaux . Nice content again !

Another great video Matthew, fun & informative. TBH, living in Asia (Taiwan) and it's subtropical climate we tend to drink more white wines than red wines, but I do have a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Listrac-Medoc 2018 aging. As far as Napa goes, here all wines are somewhere between double or triple the price from their point of origin, so I haven't drunk hardly any Napa Cabernets in a long time. I have heard that the oaky, alcoholic fruit bomb in Napa is becoming less common, so maybe I will try some Kirkland Signature California/Napa wines if I can. I like the fact that you pointed out that inside Napa there are many sub-regions and the wines vary considerably from site to site. I also generally prefer the cedar, tobacco, minerality, etc of Bordeaux and other cooler climate CS. Surprisingly, my favorite 100% CS that I drank was from Austria, that was an awesome experience. I remember some very pleasant ones from Coonawarra and have been hearing good things about South African CS as well. Keep these videos coming, they're super!

I was surprised to see the Beychevelle go down so early. I have never heard of Star Lane before. Gotta check that one out. If I’m drinking California Cabernet Sauvignon it’s usually Groth, Ridge, and sometimes Austin Hope. As for Bordeaux, I haven’t had one in a long time. I love Pichon Baron though. Chateau Duhart-Milon too. The more wine I drink, the more I want stuff that pairs with a wide range of foods. So that means the wine is White and usually German. 😂

Ohhh Groth and Ridge yummmy. I was also shocked with Beychevelle but to be fair, That is a wine that really needs age - it’s got a lot of Merlot in it and I believe it’s never as complex young. I second with you about German white wines, and I have a lot of Riesling content coming up 😉. In fact, I’m about to shoot a video

Great episode. If I could give one recommendation, when ranking the wines it would be easier to follow along if you identified the wines tasted with letters vs. numbers. That way you aren't saying wine 3 is 2. Easier to follow along when wine C is ranked 2. Keep up the great work.

Very cool video and just what I’ve been tasting! In Cali I tried Ghost Block 2019, Stag’s Leap Artemis 2019 which were both super great and balanced. Now heading back to try Bordeaux and I got some 2016 Margaux for $38 so I doubt it’s a higher level wine. Drinking well though- a ton of plum 👍🏻🙏🏻

Great Wines I love ghost block and I think there Zin is outstanding. I like Artemis but prefer their SLV. 2016 was great in Bordeaux so I bet that Margaux is pretty good

Just this Friday my friend brought over the Robert Mondavi Napa Valley 2018. Stylistically I prefer Bordeaux (also had a Château Batailley a few weeks ago) but I can definitely see the quality of the Mondavi. Great complexity, I was discovering new aromas all the time, even some nice mint to balance it out and then great length, I usually don't count seconds but with this wine I counted to 30 and it was still going. That being said, we didn't finish the bottle so maybe there is a case to be made for lighter wines. I would like to expand my knowledge of Napa and other California cabs with lighter styles, I would also like to try more aged Bordeaux as I feel the younger ones don't capture the full magic of the region.

Bordeaux is a wine that truly needs bottle age to unfurl and show all of its beauty. A lot of people poo poo on Mondavi but the Cabernet Savignon Reserve is outstanding as well as their To Kalon bottling. I always say that I love Bordeaux more, but whenever I do blind tastings this is often the result…

Started to not like California wines du to the over oaked garbage that's out there but not at these price points, like you said when done right they are outstanding; I do have some second growth Bordeaux not quite ready to drink yet.I have.been liking some south Australia wines and my fave Italian reds.Great video can't wait to open the Bordeaux.

Good video - I'll bookmark it for when I circle back to Cabernet Sauvignon. Right now I'm experimenting with Texas wines, and have tried Tempranillo twice (I really liked the first one), and have a Sangiovese and a Sagrantino (!!) on deck. I'd like to try some of your Slovenian and Croatian wines, but they are impossible to find here in Texas.

The best wines in the world come from Bourgogne in France (my region 😇). Try a Richebourg, Romanée Conti or la Tâche : incredible but so expensive.

I’ve had the Château D’issan, though it was a 2017. I’ve since bought two more from 2017 and six from 2019. I really like this wine and think it’s quite good. I haven’t tried any of the others but I’ll look into a few.

Great video! My wife and I have just begun learning more about Bordeaux after focusing heavily on Napa. I also had the 2018 D’Issan in the 93+ range. How do you think it will age? I have second bottle in my cellar I want to wait on opening. I’ll definitely try Star Lane out!

A good Bordeaux 2018, your an age them 10 years at least. Great Bordeaux, high growth, 20 years minimum. With Bordeaux wine you have to be patient. Try to drink vintage that are ready to be drink now and you’ll see the difference. Let it breath and see it evolve. I have some 2016 which are amazing, still early to drink. i would recommend to look on the internet the best vintages. Sometimes the right bank does better than the left and vice versa. Preserving wine. Get a cella. No sounds, vibration, and having hygrometer is better. (60 to 75% humidity). You need to do your homework. But when you open a nice bottle that you have taken care of, with your friends and family, the joy is to see their smile on their faces, their awe, and how much they enjoy the wine. FYI, real wine taster don’t swallow. They spit the wine. Otherwise after 5 wines tasted, they all taste good. :-) I would also watch The Drops of God, amazing AppleTV show about wine. Good luck.

I’m new to the channel, but a great video. My favorites? Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet from California and Chateau Latour from Bordeaux. Honestly, even Les Fortes de Latour. In exceptional years they downgrade the fruit so heavily that the second wine is huge. 2010, and 2015 especially. Yes, still $250 a pop, but damn.

We used to serve a Silverado Demiglace back in the day when I was chef de saucer and sous chef in early 90's 8 bottles of Silverado cabernet mireapoix apple smoked bacon shallotts reduce by 2\3rd then demi Glace reduce bya third strain for the base finish it off with thyme rosemary butter and salt and pepper to order

Quite familiar with the Star Lane wines living in Santa Barbara, low production, generally off the radar. We are more known for our Burgundy and Rhone style vineyards, however, the Bordeaux style are beginning to stand out and they taste very different from Napa.

Grassini is without question my favorite Californian Cab Sav, BUT...with the exception of the 2018 vintage. I'm not sure what the x-factor here was, but I simply did not fully enjoy Santa Barbara 2018's. They weren't outright "bad" or anything so extreme, but there was a flavor profile that was shared across vineyards, varietals, and AVA's, where they all had this twizzler-like candied fruit component that wasn't present in previous years. So far, the 2019's have already been an improvement, thank god! That said, I have to look up Star Lane!

I am a huge fan of Grassini (all their wines). I think that this example in the video would be the favorite wine of most people because of it’s approachability. Nice take on the 2019s. I’ve had several Pinot Noirs from that vintage and have been impressed. Star Lane also has a project called Dierberg which are STELLAR

Not surprised you liked Star Lane if you prefer Bordeaux style. It drinks more like a Washington state cab IMO. What did surprise me is your impression of Silverado. Never had it so I can't comment on it, but it's the lowest budget selection at the duty-free in SFO and I just stayed away from it. I'm curious now.

Great video as always, but need your advice in bourdaux wines, in my country Bolivia, I cannot find old World wines, but I`m in Chile for a bussines trip, here I could find bourdaux wines that are in my budget for 11, 16 and 20 USD, but dont know if a low price bourdaux is worth it, since I'm planning to take them home and I cant carry more than 3 due to the space and I already bought a vino nobile and a cote du rhone, if I can get a better recommendation to take back home, my plan is to buy one and drink it in Chile, thank you

@@drmatthewhorkey in Bolivia I can get most of Chilean wines, so Im trying to focus in wines that I cannot get in my hometown, the Chilean wines I buy them and drink them here, I had a Carmenere Maquis and Errazuriz Max Cabernet Sauvignon, liked better the cab, the prices in Chilean wines are good, the Errazuriz I get it for 25 USD, but here I paid 12.

Didn’t see this in the other comments, but saying “Grand Cru Bordeaux” isn’t really correct for wines outside of St. Emilion or Chateau d’Yquem. “Cru Classe Bordeaux” would probably be more accurate. Good video!

I think 18’ is a vintage you can drink now but I always like good Bordeaux w 10 years on it

Seems to mirror Judgement of Paris as well. Top wines and bottom wines are from CA. BDX wines occupy the middle spots.

Goood observation heheheh. I spoke w Mr Spurrier in person several timed about the Judement of Paris (before he passed away). It’s also noted in that book I recommended. The white wine winner was revealed before the panel tasted the reds. Therefore when the reds came if judges thought that it was from California, they did their best to give lower scores. Which maybe have contributed to the low scoring Cali cabs in that tasting. Mr. Spurrier also noted that one mistake he made was that wines were tasted one by one and people could not go back for comparison. I hope to do a video one day of first growths vs cult cali cabs…

I used to drink some Bordeaux back in the 70s/early 80s. It wasn't the overly tannic, extracted wine that seem to be the standard now. It was charming, drinkable even young, and it wasn't this inky, overpowering stuff. And, btw, it was affordable. I had a glorious bottle of Latour that cost me $27. Am I alone in remembering the more elegant, less heavy Bordeaux?

My dad speaks of buying the first growths for similar amounts, even DRC's were affordable. I bought all five great 2000 Premier Gran Crus upon release for about $100 a bottle, probably in 2004, and now the Chinese have bid them to stupid heights. Hot tip: Costco has Pontet Canet for $85, every bit as good as Mouton, which is right next door in Pauillac. Fantastic wine.

A good Bordeaux is fantastic. The challenge is to find one that is affordable. I’ve had several $50 Bordeaux wines that are plonk. For the same $$, I can find better California wines.

i had Cali wine before. Hard to find good one, or you have to pay the price. Bordeaux wine in France, you can get some great one around 30 euro. France keeps the affordable good wines. You have to shop around. But importing wine cost money so you’ll always pay more. Best thing to do: Go to Bordeaux, especially in June for the festival. 3 days. That’s one of my to do list. (And i’m French, born in France, Anjou region). One once i tasted a CA wine I thought was a Bordeaux. It was $100 a bottle though. Lots of CA wine are overpriced, commercial. Santa Ynes also had some surprises for me. It’s all about exploration, being opened.

Thanks… scores are an imperfect system as wine is always changing. I’ve covered this in previous videos. I use them here to I can organize in my mind what I prefer in the blind tasting but as you see, don’t put a big emphasis on them

I guess I don’t understand blind tastings. Dr. Horkey knows that early on, a specific wine is “the most expensive” or “the highest alcohol “. How does he know that before revealing ALL the wines?🤔🤔🤔🤔

I know what the wines are initially because I have to procure them… I then Coravin them and have somebody mix them up when I am out of the room. It’s not double blind but it’s a good way to asssess by person preference

Young Bordeaux wines shows better from a decanter with two hours or so of aeration.

Personally I find it kind of "unfair" to compare young Bordeaux to young Napa cabernet sauvignon, especially at this price point. I definitely appreciate a young napa cab, but mostly keep my Bordeaux for at least 15 years before opening.

I barely touch US/New World wines so I can't tell you if I like or dislike their wines. I drink Bordeaux and some of my favorites are Brane Cantenac 2016 for good price to quality ratio, though its not cheap either as its second growth from stellar vintage. My favorite Bordeaux wine, the wine reserved for special occasions, is Ducru Beaucaillou 2016. Again, I think 2016 is the best modern vintage across the board, perhaps even better than the 2009.

Good call on 2016! We'll see how 2018 stacks up to it with time. I always say that I prefer Bordeaux... However, every time I do a blind tasting like this, the results are similar to what happens in the video

Man, you’re comparing Bordeaux Wine 2018 with Cali wine. Bordeaux 2018 wines (which was pretty good year) are not ready to drink. I would wait at least another 5 years at least. 10 years minimum. So you are drinking them young and they cannot reveal their potential.

What this guy says about American wine compared to European wines? Something wrong bias involved I think? American wines cannot compete? American got some sorts of additives or chemicals, Hey I been a wine drinker all my life 70 years only ever found one American wine I would buy again?

I always say that I prefer Bordeaux but when I do blind tastings like this, results like this can happen!
