This isn't just affecting seniors, everyone is being affected. Several friends rent up by $300. A $300 increase could be the difference between being able to pay your rent or not pay your rent. Most folks living paycheck to paycheck. You don't find out until it is time to renew your lease that the landlord is doing the okey doke with the new rental rate. If you can't afford the new rate, you have typically 60 days to move..90 days if "lucky"...and you had NO IDEA that having to move was around the corner. Crazy.

So true. I lived in one apartment for about 20 years, rent went up modestly. When the landlord past away his wife raised the rent by 50%. I had to get a second job. It’s happening all over. Here in Tennessee we had two complexes in my town that went from $600 to $800 a month to $1100 to $1480 a month. They were for low income people and they were required to have a job because they didn’t take section 8. A lot of people who lived there were new to the country. We’re very close to Nashville but in a different county so all of the surrounding counties saw increases because of the people moving in. And moving out in rural areas doesn’t help because they’re increasing out there too. Everything‘a increasing fast except pays and the south is notorious for low paying jobs. People are buying little plots of land and building all these cookie cutter homes out here in the middle of nowhere. It looks so out of place. I moved out here to get away from that nonsense. I'd also like to mention that a lot of land here on the plateau is being scalped for more land for massive livestock farms.... Which is much better (visually) than homes being built but it hurts to see it happen because it's really hurting the family farms. The people who own the land out here are apparently very greedy.

Now it’s cluttered with houses just like Brentwood. I moved to Kannapolis North Carolina when I was in first grade. It use to be pretty there too but it’s becoming cluttered with houses there too. I say cluttered because they’re on top of each other and that scares me. A few years ago I lived in a neighborhood in Antioch. A house caught on fire and it jumped from house to house to house because they were so close together. The area I grew up in wasn’t like that but I’m sure it is now. I remember when you bought a house and you had a nice size front and backyard. Now you have this itty-bitty little yard and the realtors claim its huge. It’s only big enough to spit in. You can’t even put a pool in it. You can yell at your spouse and your next-door neighbor’s spouse will say what. I remember how my grandparents had these solid homes. Now you get a house and the walls are so paper thin that you can hear everything the person in the next room do. It’s crazy. I hate how they’re taking away all the green space. I feel bad for her and people her age going thru this. This is why homeownership is so important. For those who like to say you don't actually own because you still have to pay taxes, need to change your perspective. If people buy homes in their younger years, they won't have to worry about how they can afford rent when in their later years because the home would be paid off. The only thing they would need to worry about is the annual property taxes which is much less than any rent payment.

Stop renting people. 2 bedroom apartment in my town here in W. Michigan is 1,600.00. My HOUSE payment, including taxes and insurance is less then 900.00. BUY A HOUSE.

I live in a one bedroom box apartment, not enough room for her and my younger adult brother that's helping her also as her live- in- care worker. If my home was big enough. Do you think I would let her and any family members not stay with me. Besides my mother has always been a independent woman even at the age she is. My father died 6 yrs ago and she always been used to living in homes, not apartments. This is very new to her, wait list for seniors living are long.

Herself could be receiving government rental assistance and they have rules where you can not let other family members live with you if you don’t have enough rooms.

My landlord is trying to do the same to me. Charging a late fee each day and yet I have to work extra to get that money. Shit’s scary out here and it’s like the landlords put it off on one person and then the next and the next. I tried for rental assistance and no one called back. Believe me, I’ve called several times within a 2 day period. People wanna feel bad when they see you struggle as you aren’t working hard enough, but will drive past when they see you living on the streets or in your car. We can’t truly help other countries and neglect our own, sorry not sorry. Prayer helps, but not always from everybody. God bless this lady and I honestly hope she can live out the rest of her life comfortably in her home.

@@dcg590 while I understand that, I just don’t feel it is proper to kick a person while down. They have rights as much as the tenant does, but I’ve never given my landlord reasoning to believe that I would do them dirty. It was a hiccup for me and for them a way to earn more profit. Their earnings were set to increase as my neighbors are both leaving and if I left that would just triple their money. Everyone is out to make bank, just they shouldn’t take advantage of people. I know, I know…it’s just business. Lol business as usual til it’s your or your family going thru it. Yes, I’m doing fine, I work 3 jobs now lol. Not suitable, but necessary to (I hate to say) live rn.

Heart breaking that this happening all over. What’s the solution? Reach out for assistance? 🙄 Red tape, waitlists, unrealistic qualifications. When my terminally Ill mom needed assistance, she didn’t qualify bc she didn’t make ENOUGH!!! These people will be homeless before their application is even processed. You can drive by any highway where I live and their are entire families with all their stuff in bins under tarps. I’ve never seen such homelessness as I have in the past few years.

It is a sad situation for the elderlies especially when they don't own their own homes and have to rent or can not live with one of their children. I am 70 years of age and am buying my home. If I live to be 88 hopefully I will have paid off my mortgage. I feel so sad for her and the look on her face is overwhelming for me. I will keep her in my prayers.
