The Grand Seiko SBGA231 Spring Drive Diver's watch is the BEST all around sport watch ever made. This is true because of the unique design of the Spring Drive movement that makes it more durable than a typical mechanical movement like those found in a Rolex or Omega. The Spring Drive is very accurate. Mine has gained about .5 seconds in 30 days. That's correct one half second! Unlike a typical quartz movement the Spring Drive does not have a battery or any other components that are likely to fail over time. It's estimated that a Spring Drive will run accurately for 35 to 50 years before any servicing is needed.

I have really enjoyed your videos on the rolex and grand seikos and your history with them. what i like the most is that i think your videos are literally the only videos i've found on youtube where the watch actually looks like its been in use, and used for its intended purpose.. because if its just a collectible thats great, but without use, you can't really know it does what it claims well. very much appreciate the time you've taken

I'm not hating on the watch but anyone who calls it the 'best watch period' is insane. For starters it's a BIG watch in both it's length and diameter. I have subjective complaints about the aesthetics (I don't like the hands or holes in the case. I don't like the font of the numbers on the bezel and I think the dial is too busy with the date and the power reserve). It's a high quality watch, no doubt, but the 'best watch period'? Come on. And let me be clear, I have much respect for your channel and your reviews. I personally prefer the snow flake to this model and prefer other divers to this one too. I also love your gold datejust. Just my opinion is all.

Jean, I couldnt agree with you more about the fine craftsmanship of the Grand Seiko, however when you say its "better" than Rolex I think that may be a subjective comment. Better? Really? In the event that one day you decide to sell your Grand Seiko, assuming you already bought one, do you think it could hold its "resale value" as strong as a Rolex Submariner with Date? Again I agree the GS is a fine time piece but at 6K its pretty steep unless you just plan to use and discard. It's hard to beat certain Rolex models in terms of resale.

Speedracer do you think the Rolex date hold there money better than the no date sub?
@Javadabadooo
@Javadabadooo 2 жыл бұрын
@@speedracer2111 It is sad to read about Rolex in context of "resale value" so often. That is not the only one attribute. In fact for real watch enthusiast (or real user) that shouldn't be any attribute at all. If you would say "Rolex is very high quality watch and they are able to hold quality at that level for very long time", that would be another story. But "resale value"? When you buy the watch that is reasonable good why you should consider to resale it? Watches are ment to be used. You should have better investment vehicle than your watch. Watch is for everyday pleasure, passion, practicality.

@MidAtlanticTV
@MidAtlanticTV 5 жыл бұрын
You are wasting your money if you service a Rolex or Grand Seiko watch every five years. Rolex, for example, generally will charge the same fee to service a watch after twenty years that they would charge after five years. For those who compare a watch to a car they are clearly apples and oranges. If you go twenty years without servicing your vehicle you will have major costly failures. Not so with a Rolex. Rolex “services” twenty year old watches that were never opened everyday and generally will charge the same fee as any other service. In fact they quote the service cost before they examine all the parts for wear. Generally the only additional fees they will charge are for items like crystals, hands, dials, etc. Those are often optional and should be turned down if you want to maintain your watches original status. Once the watchmaker gets into the service they will replace any worn parts as part of the service at NO ADDITIONAL cost. These are the parts that wear as a result of dried up lubricants. Rolex builds these costs into the service. It's routine to replace such parts as needed. So, the moral of the story is wait until your watch is not running properly and then have it serviced. Hey Craig great job on your videos. I recently purchased the grand Seiko diver homage from San Martin. It has a pt5000 movement that has been averaging Less Than 3 seconds fast per day period which I find to be incredible. None of my other seiko's are doing that. This watch is so stunning on my wrist I get compliments all the time. I did not want to have to pay $6,000 for the original. So I bought this for $355. Please check it out I wanted to get your thoughts on it because I respect your opinion. I know the Spring Drive is an incredible movement but I think I got lucky on my 3 seconds fast per day. Once a month I hacked the movement for 2 minutes and I'm back to perfect time period again please check it out and tell me what you think. Ray usa

are the watch parts lubricated? If so, I don't believe there is any lubricant that will perform effectively for that length of time, nobody is saying the watch won't tick over after 30-40 years but it might not be great for the components... ya gotta lube it up!

That's what they recommend to maintain accuracy, limit wear, etc. I've got a cheap mechanical swiss watch 45 years old that's never been serviced, that still works fine and still use it and accuracy from what I remember was not much different then. Maybe auto watches need more service because of the force on the bearing... not sure.

If you're not regularly opening your divers to apply a bit of silicone grease to both the caseback and crown gaskets, you're running a higher risk of water damage than opening either the crown or the caseback. A screw down crown and caseback are designed to be opened. Gaskets should be replaced every few years regardless.

I have never understood the point of “hacking” capabilities that allow automatic and mechanical movements to be set with to-the-second accuracy when they cannot long maintain that accuracy. We share a lack of appreciation for mechanical and automatic watches. I would love to own this watch, but I find the price resistible, preferring the overall value of a good quartz watch.
