Vanessa Feltz talks to family barrister Paula Rhone-Adrien about a Grandfather's decision to leave only £50 in his will to three of his grandchildren because he felt disappointed they didn't visit him.
Veteran Frederick Ward was described in court as a strong willed and independent person, who appeared to have changed his will before dying aged 91 in 2020.
After the grandchildren discovered they had been disinherited, the will was challenged in the high-court, but their case was thrown out by the judge, Master Brightwell.

The five granddaughters are all adult women and their dad ( the eldest son) had predeceased their grandfather by five years. After his elder son's death, the grandfather then changed his will to divide his estate between his two surviving children ( the ":aunt and uncle") leaving his eldest son's children completely out of the will. I believe it may have been the uncle who offered up 50 GBP each to the daughters when it all kicked off at the will reading. A lovely family......

Many grandchildren never show up for their grandparents or even their parents, unless they are dead or about to die. I've seen it time and time again. These old people spend their old age forgotten and abandoned, at a time when they needed support the most. Not a call, not a bit of help and concern, or a simple visit. Then they die and all of a sudden everybody - not just grand children - shows up as if they were always there, trying to get their piece of the pie. Good on him doing that.

@@elitet3359 why??? Why would you leave more than a thought to your Grandchildren? Most people give to their children and then they can give from their part to their children.

@@elitet3359hello. Without a will, the inheritance order is spouse first, then child, then grandchild. Also, I’ve an unmarried daughter with a boyfriend. If she dies the boyfriend does not automatically inherit her share in their property or other assets. Her assets would go first to her parents, then to her children if any, then to her siblings if any. Depending on who’s alive at the time. The same is true in reverse. So they either need to get married or more cheaply make a will leaving assets to each other!

Have made my Will. Strongly feel that my sons are my responsibility not my grandchildren. As a grandmother am always told that their children are Not my children when discussing a better world by naming them. Got a sharp short rebuttal on how dare I question their parents. So for those of you who feel Yes the grandchildren should not be left out, think again. My money can burn it if I like.

I’d have burned every pound. If my grandchildren behaved as such they wouldn’t see a penny either. I’d make sure the money was spent immediately on food for animal shelters etc before it was left to any ungrateful offspring!!

I have always been of the opinion that if you do not reciprocate my love, visits, telephone calls or do not have the decency to say thank you for birthday or Christmas gifts whilst I am alive, you have made it quite clear that you do not want me in your life and deserve absolutely nothing from me when I die. My Grandaughter will get effectively nothing, She's 21, at university, and hasn't bothered to pick up her face from her phone to even say "Hello" in years. I was gradually giving her my jewellery, (some inherited) but after the borderline insulting and definitely ungrateful response when the gift was an expensive, handmade silver and amber bracelet she'd previously admired, that stopped. Obviously, I'm still here and the relationship could improve, but as it stands she's due the modest amount given on birthdays and at Christmas. The small bequest shows she was not overlooked. I reared my children to understand that actions have consequences, if her mother has not instilled that knowledge in her, then so be it.

I have told my children there will be nothing left from me apart from some odds and ends and other family heirlooms I acquired from my grandparents. I have been a stay-at-home, single, mother for most of their life and feel I have already given them so much that what I do have has to get me through my old age as I do not want to be a burden to my children. I work have worked hard to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, as well as the occasional holiday to see their family in the UK. My eldest has married into a wealthy family and doesn't need anything from me, and they will all inherit money/houses from their father. They will just have to see if there is anything left when I go

Yes, he is entitled to do what the hell he wants, it's his money, it's his will. The greed, underhandedness and bald-faced lie/excuse for the claim which showed the immense disrespect of the grandkids was a disgrace - the courts had it right. A will should not be allowed to be contested. Mine won't be - I made sure of that. I made a video (with date recorded) of myself in my living room making it absolutely clear that I made that will without interference, I then got the camera, panned it around the room filming my executors, then down and filmed my will, all pages spread and unsigned on the table, and then set it on a sideboard so it could catch my executors getting up off the couch and and all of us signing it, myself sealing it in the envelope and handing it to them. There is a section in the will that references this video (which was put on a DVD). There is no doubt and no contest as it's not just words on a page. Everything I own goes to my brother and sister, grandkids, great grandkids - nothing. Let them make their own way in life as I did. As for the other examples that Vanessa brought up, and this is a hypothetical response based on what vanessa said by the way, well again, a will is a will so should be adhered to, however, I would not take the chance in any 'so-called questionable' condition as that person would simply not be in the will at all.
