Venice may be known as the city of love, the city of canals, but for those who’ve been there, they will know that around every street corner, there’s a shop selling one of those fantastical, traditional Venetian masks… But what’s the meaning behind it? Why do they bring to mind some sort of extraordinary festival of magic, masquerade, and mystery? Because that was indeed the case.
This is the kind of tale that begins with the traditional, “Once upon a time…” when the streets of the city would fill up with people of all circles of life, who would mingle and celebrate, wearing those intricate, often outlandish disguise of masks and coats and costumes, concealing their identity from the rest of the world…
In this new episode of our Journey to Excellence series, Grand Luxury brings you to meet Marilisa Dal Cason, mask maker, and Francesco Briggi, costume maker, two individuals who keep alive the ancient, beautiful traditions of Venice.

Amazing! These masks and costumes really are pieces of art. Can you imagine Venice in the 1700's with people wearing these fabulous dresses and masks? I wonder whether only the rich could afford such dresses? They are really magnificent! Thank you for another great video!!!

Dear Susanne, Many thanks for your delightful comment as always! Through Marilisa and Francesco we can almost dive into the Venice carnival of the past, don't you think? As far as we know, the audience at that time was composed of different social classes. The masks and costumes guarantee anonymity, the festival-goers often chose the opposite class to theirs. However, the more elaborate the costume and mask, the more expensive it was!
