I cannot imagine how difficult Joe's life has been. Having a bipolar mother is serious. The mood swings, instability, chemical imbalance, uncontrollable anger, aggression, etc....😢😢😢

I agree that there is no room for racism in this day and she, especially when black people are so amazing, hardworking, supportive, fun and successful, however, the older generation needs help and teaching. Many Korean women are not that affectionate anyway, even with their own children so her not really interacting with the children or even Alena didn't seem off to me. She wasn't lovey lovey with Joe either. The way she looked at and held the baby showed compassion and love for her new grandson. Each one teach one! It is sad that no other ethnic group is easily accepting of black people as black people are at accepting everyone else but, learning one another is the start to decrease racial bias and ignorance. I think Alena didn’t try to embrace her mother in law The visit was awkward 😬🥲 For someone with mental illnesses, the children needed a nudge to embrace grandma. They wanted to but no adult encouraged. Joe asking her thoughts about him and Alena was bang out of order. That was not the time or place. I am not surprised she left. That must have been hard for poor grandma. Mental health is real .

Well you have to understand that us asians arent really that used to being that affectionate, and the fact that the grandma deals with bipolar disorder, which can be very serious and unpredictable, then I can understand that the rest of the family was kind of unsure how to approach her, taking in consideration what she maybe or maybe not comfortable with and respecting her personal space.

No! he doesn't need to be around her. She has other family that can take care of her or a home. His mother doesn't respect him, his wife, or the family. I'm not hanging around my family or in-laws if they act a certain way. Hopefully she has changed her views and got helped. If so I would visit and call from time to time that's it. That's what most families do anyway. Holiday visits, phone calls, and now social media.

He needs then to jungle between mom and wife. She is too old to change. But they young to change. The question in wish. Probably that's also question in culture. Since Korean culture require a respect for parents! That's why she didn't like this woman. Guess she knew her future disrespectful attitude...

Joe's mom was clearly uncomfortable with the camera in her face. He should have asked could he film her. I understand if there is animosity or tension between Alena and her mother-in-law, but Alena could have, at least, asked her how she was doing or something. Also, Joe is gonna have every sick eating those eggs and other stuff. Alena's dad popping up randomly while Joe's mother is there ... (side eye)

Why? Elena knows her mother in law is racist. Why does she have to make her comfortable and she wasn't comforting or welcoming to her marrying her son. I believe it was planned for her family to come and meet Joe's family.

Joe, I heard you. I understand your feelings. I am trying to forgive my mother but sad part she is not acknowledging that she has a mental problem. Mental problem is not the sign of weakness. Alaina did not greet her mother-in-law or show that she was welcome. Joe should not have asked his mother what she thought of him and Alaina when they were getting married. It was not needed for Joe to tell us that his mother has bipolar. That is something that is private and should not be told to everyone. It is important to always show love to our family members whether they have a mental illness or not. You only get one mother.

You are right but i can put myself in her feelings. She knows that they are racist like many korean family in their case. I could be like her, nothing to do more than she did. I lived in Paris and i saw many racist'homeless . Now i can see she gave more grand kids and the situation goes better now. I hope so!

Alaina was respectfully cautious because Asian culture is a very reserved culture. But I agree that some of that personal health info about Joe's mom is too personal and asking his mom (while filming her) about them getting married is very embarassing.

Why did the Korean mom went out ahead?.. it's like as if she switched into another whole new mood..😶👽 In my own assessment/opinion, I think she doesn't want too many people or even "too much" noise because she's not used to it even though they've been living in the West for how many years..one should understand her part, just saying in my end..
