Granny Dollar looked so much like my Aunt Sarah. Aunt Sarah was half Cherokee. However, Aunt Sarah was a natural platinum blond with blue eyes (even when her hair changed to white, she looked the same). Her skin was dark from working in the sun all her married life. She lived alone after Uncle Elmer died. When she fell (tripped over a rug in her house) and broke a hip, she never walked again (even after surgery to repair the hip). She didn't live long after she was put in a Nursing home. Aunt Sarah was 94 years old when she died. She may have lived many more years, if she had not fallen and broke her hip. I was always told that I look like my Aunt Sarah. I'm only 5 foot 2 inches tall (Aunt Sarah was a lot taller than me, even in old age). My hair is almost all white now. I was a red head. Thank you for telling this story and bringing Aunt Sarah's memory back to me today.

As a fellow almost 6ft woman who is also part Cherokee, but mostly Irish/Scottish, this story was everything. Her middle name is what I named my daughter too ❤️Another reason why I started using a grounding/earthing cord when I sleep! Her practical wisdom of wearing shoes all the time affecting our health is so interesting. What an amazing woman.

My Great Grandmother Cason was 3/4 Cherokee, and lived in Waycross Ga. Her Sister, Aunt Pink, used to conjure away warts, and I learned one way from her, so I never kept 'em. She also taught me how to "steal" your hiccups. There were about seven brothers and sisters, who are buried in Homerville, Ga. They all lived from 99 to 105 yr old. I would give anything to talk to them again, but they all passed on over 40 yrs ago. These memories leave me thankful, but melancholy. Thank You, and Salute!!

It is my pleasure! The Casons somehow escaped the expulsion from Georgia, and were original pioneers of the area around the Okeefenokee Swamp. They helped build Waycross, and some of their kin that didn't assimilate, probably participated in the Wildes Massacre, which started the Second Seminole War. I am also kin to the Wildes, by John Wildes. John was one of the four brothers and one sister that survived by hiding in the Swamp. The soldiers buried the rest of the family wrapped in saddle blankets, with a wagon bed used as a common coffin. The posses caught up to Billy Bowlegs (indian name Alligator) group, and the Battle of Cow Creek ensued, which made headlines up north. One Indian was killed there at Wayfair, Georgia, with the rest escaping to Hamilton Co, Fla, before making their way to the Everglades. I was fortunate enough to be in S. Fla, and attended the 1st and 2nd Reinactment of the 2nd Seminole War in 2011/2012! A tribal officer ask me to speak, but I felt my verified knowledge was inadequate, so I declined. There is a marker in Wayfair by highway 129, and there is a marker at the Wildes massacre sight, but it is now private property. The Wildes family homestead is on the Kings Highway @Laura Walker State Park in Waycross. We went to it's opening and several anniversaries as I was growing up. I regret now, that I didn't gather verifiable evidence of this History while it was available, because it's almost Forgotten History these days. Salute and Thank You again, for Preserving our History for future generations.

How sad none of her siblings children came to her aid. All but forgotten, a true miracle she lived as long as she did. The Catholic church back then helped people and I'm glad she found shelter. Nancy got to die with dignity. When I first moved here in 1995 I met a man as I was walking my dog; he told me he was a WW1 veteran and 100 years old. He was dressed in rags, crusted in dirt and other things and said he was living in the basement of his home. I went home but couldn't stop thinking about him. The next day I went to the VFW just 1 mile away and told them about the old man and his appalling situation. Dozens of veterans came the next day and rescued him. One man put him in his MIL house on his property and was catered too for the last years of his life by the veterans. It's a shame how we warehouse the old and forget them today.

Oh, I really needed a good story like that this evening with all that's going on. Granny Dollar was right about those angels. My favorite job ever was working for hospice care, and I'd ask God to let me be with people when it was time for them to go. I've seen healthy people freak out then, and I couldn't bear the thought of someone scaring the patient b4 they were able to see their escort. A lot of people are nervous just beforehand, and they don't need somebody making them more upset. I used to like to ask people at the edge to take a message to my own departed family, so they knew I knew they were going to be okay. I'll look forward to meeting Granny Dollar myself someday.

I think like she did, just because we get older, doesn’t mean to just give up. Not me, may they haul me off in a hurst. I can’t believe she had a 15 year old chicken 😂. I pray my little dog goes when I go. Can’t see that the Good LORD would separate us 🙏. Anyways, thank you JD. You’re absolutely fabulous! You’re a blessing in my life. Like some in this story, I have Cherokee/Irish blood, my Great grandma on my mom's side was full Cherokee, my gran was full, my grand father on mom's side was full Irish (one of 27). Both Cherokee and Irish were treated horribly by others way back in the day. Now, you don't hear very much of their stories because everyone else is screaming about themselves like they are the only ones that anything happened to. People need to understand and respect: Understand that "today" is "here now", Respect the things that happened in the past and Understand they need to stay in the past, you cant bring them into "today" and use them as a weapon to punish people of "today" who had nothing to do with the past. If you read this, and can Understand and Respect, I say thank you. 😉💛😎

Dang it JD...This one made me tear up... She was such a respectable woman with a big heart, taking in and caring for her husbands' other wife and children speaks to her sense of self worth...she certainly wasn't insecure! I was afraid the owner was going to be evil, and what do you know...he gave her his rocking chair that he was sitting in! 😲 This was a wonderful story to start my Saturday...thanks! 👍👍

Hello JD! That’s such a coincidence, my family had lived on Sand Mountain next to Anawaka post office. I still have family in Stevenson Alabama. My great great grandfather and grandmother lived on Sand Mountain while raising their children. But my Great Great Grandfather passed away as did several children. I took my father to Sand Mountain and to the graves of family members buried there. I have a picture of my Great Grandfather sitting and his pet owl sitting on his knee. Thank you for sharing this story with us. Have a blessed weekend!
