Grapes and raisin toxicity in dogs and cats. Yet another reason why animals are so different from humans! Grapes and raisins are a pretty common toxin we see in pets as emergency veterinarians. Even though some pets do not develop clinical toxicity even after eating concerning amounts, since we do not have a way to predict that it is better to be safe than sorry!
As discussed in the video, another reason why I always error on the side of caution with grapes/raisins is that the amount of tartaric acid in a single grape can change depending on when the grape was picked from the wine in it's growth! There are a lot of subtle little factors we will likely never know when it comes to the grapes/raisins your pet may have eaten.
If your pet does eat grapes and/or raisins, please contact with a pet poison call line or a veterinarian for guidance on what to do next. If you're a super nervous pet owner like me, you can just bring your pet straight to a veterinarian to make them vomit up the grapes/raisins.

Our German shepherd dog loved to eat grapes. She only had them occasionally whenever they were ripe in our garden. She loved the pears from the pear tree, too and also cracked the walnuts open to eat. She lived until the age of 14, was euthanised after her intestines got tangled up repeatedly. Another one of our German shepherds decided once to eat the remains of the mush we used to make grape juice. The remains had been sitting in a bucket in the sun on our patio for several hours before the dog decided to eat quite a lot of it. Of course, with the sun and the oxygen, it had started to ferment and we had a very drunk dog sleeping off her inebriated state. She did not even care about the mailman. She was fine afterwards, though.

We were so lucky that my childhood Golden seemed to be one of the immune ones, because grapes were one of her favorite treats before I went to vet tech school and found out that they tended to be poisonous for dogs. Of course, even if she had no immediate consequences for years of a grape here and there, she did have some form of metastisized liver or kidney cancer at age twelve. No telling if her diet added to that.

Thanks, it's a really useful and informative video, and I bet you saved many pets by uploading it! The only issue is, those viewers that are not from the US likely use metric system, and it would be really nice if you also told us the numbers in grams or milligrams, even if we shouldn't rely on them. (If someone is curious, it's 85 g and 14.5 g, respectively)

I love your videos! This one wasn't paced quite as well as your others, but still love it. Maybe finish the chugging sketch before the rest? It felt like a lot with two separate cutaway gags happening. Great information, regardless. That's the most important part. Thanks for sharing! 🙏🏽

I called the poison hot line once for my Gus pup after he ate over a cup of lard out of my deep fryer... they wanted $95!!! The ER vet told me to call them because they are 2 hours away, it was 11 pm and his regular vet was closed.. needless to say it was a very stressful time.. I ended using peroxide.

I’m pretty sure my Jack Russel was immune to this. Me and my husband were playing with him and we had a few snack boxes of raisins that we were trying to burn through so we were throwing them at him to see how fast and accurately he could snatch them mid air. (Which was super fast btw) And like the idiot, uneducated pet owner I was, I took of video of this new, entertaining game we had so geniusly come up with and I posted it on Facebook. A few minutes later I got a text message from one of my Facebook friends saying that grapes and raisins were toxic for dogs! Whoopsies. I stayed up and monitored him overnight though and he didn’t seem phased. He was kinda upset that we stopped playing the game though and wanted to know why we weren’t giving him anymore of those tasty treats. But this dog had a stomach of steel or something because he would literally eat anything dropped on the floor…whether it was edible or not! Never phased him.

And I don’t know what kilometer is…also I get really confused when you guys complain about the blistering heat of something like 30° and I’m like, wtf that’s like below freezing temperatures! Luckily Alexa and Google exist for these very reasons 👍🏻
