Graphene is an arrangement of carbon atoms in a shell that is only one atom thick. It is highly conductive, which means energy flows more easily. It's also more rigid, which prevents lithium from deforming and makes the battery last longer.
Mixing graphene, or related materials like graphene oxides and reduced graphene oxides, with lithium solves both problems. The extra resistance also makes graphene batteries survive more charge cycles than a conventional one.
This is because it is possible to demand more of them, charging them with a greater electrical current. They will degrade faster than under normal use, but the extra cycles more than offset the problem and make them last longer.
