I’m a vector artist myself. I totally understand how challenging it can be to clean up low res images for clients. I’ve vectorized tons of low res images as well and the final results are so satisfying. 👍🏼

This helped me transform a pixelated jpg image of a radio schematic into a vector AI image that I could take to a DIY shop for laser-engraving onto plywood. Your method was clear enough for me to understand even though you were using AI on a Mac and I was using Inkscape on a PC, and all that despite my having no experience using either software package. Pretty good teaching, I'd say! Thanks for uploading such a clear video!

You're welcome! For logos, I almost always redraw them with the pen tool, since they have to be fairly exact. But if they're high-res enough, they *may* work.

Thank you for a very helpful tutorial, Anne - I learned a lot! I wonder: Could you have avoided the B&W→RGB protocol (~7:37, ~7:53) with the rose image if you had used either the Auto-Color or High Color options in the Image Trace panel (2:58), rather than the B&W option?

Yes, that's probably the best way to go about it - start out with one of the color presets, and then change # of colors to the lowest possible, 2. That way you don't have to worry about the grayscale aspect, but you also don't have tons of colors to work with/reduce! Thank you - I hadn't thought of doing it that way!

Brilliantly done. I have such POOR experience with illustrator it's almost embarrassing. I've spent nearly all my time strictly using the pen tool in photoshop and going from there. I know illustrator is just as powerful, with the proper know-how. Thank you for your tutorials. I hope to grasp it a bit more using your tutorials.

If you know how to use the pen tool, that's a great starting point! That's one of the hardest parts of learning Illustrator - just getting the hang of that tool. Hopefully my tutorials will help! If you want perfectly clean vectors, the pen tool (not pencil) is the way to go! But image trace is a good workaround if the starting image is already very clean.

Thanks for uploading this video. Any suggestion on how to trace quickly a digital photo of a chair to put in a user manual? The vector image should be just the outline of the product.

Unfortunately, that's not really possible with Illustrator's capabilities. The vector drawings you see in user manuals are drawn by hand, usually with the pen tool.

Hi. Great video. Thank you for sharing. May i please make a request? I would like to see how and what the finial image would look like in order to engrave a picture with a laser engraver. If possible maybe like a check list of things that need to be done before engraving an image onto a item. I apologize that I don’t know the correct terminology to frame the question. Also, is it possible to show how we can add more fonts to AI? Thank you in advance.

I've never done laser engraving, so I don't think I would be much help there. But I can show how to add fonts to AI - I'll add it to the list. Thank you for the suggestions!

Great tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to explain it clearly and thoroughly! It just shows me that Illustrator's Image Trace function is really not as good as tracing by hand with the pen tool. As designers, we all learned that the cleanest curves were made with the least number of points. Illustrator's Image Trace uses way too many points to make curves that don't look very good. I trace with the pen tool. The curves are clean, it's good practice for my pen tool skills and doesn't take that long to make a sharp image that's right forever after that.

Thank you! Yes, it's true that the pen tool is usually better. But in my opinion, if you can have someone examine one tracing made with the pen tool, and one made with image trace, and they can't tell them apart, there really is no reason to use the pen tool. The time it takes just isn't worth it to get nearly the exact result (I'm talking about image tracing a very high res, clean image, which gives a very good image trace outcome).
