👉 Learn how to graph exponential functions involving vertical shift. An exponential function is a function that increases rapidly as the value of x increases. To graph an exponential function, it is usually very useful to make the table of values of the function. This is done by choosing a range of values of x and then plug the x-values into the function to get the y-values. We then graph the obtained points.
When a constant is added/subtracted to the exponential function, the function is said to be transformed vertically. Addition of a constant to the function moves the graph of the exponential function upwards while subtraction of a constant to the function moves the graph of the exponential function downwards.

When you talked about walking 3 miles down the x-axis in the negative direction and then climbing up a ladder to place a point, I wondered how high that point would actually be. It seems a supercomputer might be necessary to calculate the distance. According to my calculations, using standard graph paper (4 squares per inch), the y value would be 3 to the 760,320th power + 2 units. I have no idea how many miles that works out to. The calculator I used would only do 3 to the 76th power (obviously a minute fraction of the actual distance.) It still came out to 7.2 x 10 to 30th power miles. This is equivalent to making 9.8 x 10 to 27th round trips to the sun.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in any given exponiential function there will always be no restriction on the domain. The range depends on the value that is outside of the function in this case is 2.
@brianmclogan
@brianmclogan 6 жыл бұрын
that is correct! except if there is a vertical reflection that will affect the range as well, this problem has a reflection about the y axis though which does not affect the domain or the range

when you have a function being multiplied by a negative "inside" the function, it will reflect the y-axis

Why did you put the dotted line there on the graph? Do you just always put it in the middle of the 2 points? It was between 1 and 3 but I don’t know why?
