A Grapple Yarder Rescue on The West Coast Of Canada
After a near disaster
A 110 ton Grapple Yarder was left perched on the side of a mountain
being held in place by two cables.
A Team of loggers spent 7 days rigging the machine for this rescue, re-fueling the Grapple Yarder in place three times.

Hats off to the loggers. You guys are physicists and master operators all rolled up in 1.

Excellent work. I helped rescue an American 7220 on rubber. And a 599 on tracks but neither where as precarious as that one. Hats off.👍💪

Not too shabby for a pack of Kanooks! I sure am glad that 1) they kept the yarder on the landing and 2) you were able to get it out of there! I hope you boys patted yourselves on the back after this one!

Just found this video. I fell in that block. The tail hold is on one of my stumps. We airlifted the mechanic out with knee injuries.

Saw your video and thought, that yarder is toast. Then I was recommended this one. Good job by these guys to bring it home.

Early 90s we had Madil 044 crossing a bridge, the outside girder wasn't notched derp enough, the log wasn't strapped, on crossing the log squished out and it fell over on its side, lander on rock Creek walls, first we caught the oil with pads, hooked the vacuum tree on shop truck on fuel, hyd, and it sucked air in instead of oil into creek, we were on QCI Mclinton Bay, Olympic Forest Prod, by the time the Forest Service , Dept of Environment arrived no sign of oil, scolded us a bit about working before they got there, but I just threw my hands up " by the time you get out of the coffee shop we had it under control, no fish hazards, that my concern not seeing you" he looked at me and said, " wish every camp had you there" nice compliment, 1 1/2 days later it was back logging, good thing we had 2 excavators on uphill side, it was a chattering team effort like this, yuppers we are a tough breed.

My dad was a tank-driver/mechanic in WW2. He always made a bit of a deal about not relying on the parking brake on gradients. Parking in such a way that a vehicle didn't have a clear run. Leave it in the opposite gear to slope (reverse/1st.) and if necessary place chocks. I'm a bit surprised that something like this yarder would be left on a slope relying on air pressure alone.I guess the mechanic crew need to do some safety training and maybe the operators too.

It was simply a near horrible accident with a mechanic that was doing a simple repair. He ended up jumping from the machine but he survived. Ironically, a few months after I edited this video, I went to work for the same company, with the same machine, in the exact same part of the setting. This time we parked it differently when we were done.

A bunch of numb nuts could have wrecked the yarder and messed up this companys income stream for who knows how long? Good job all around, what a relief it must have been when on safe ground.

How did it get into that situation? Was it just parked too close to the edge and started sliding down the hill?
@lunchboxfabrications
@lunchboxfabrications 9 жыл бұрын
+Ben Browning It was parked in a sort of level area away from the cliff. A mechanic had come to perform basic maintenance and the air brakes on the tracks let go while he was in the cab and it started running down the hill. Just freak timing for that to happen.

The guy standing between the cat and yarder on the cutbank would have been in a pretty damn bad spot if something did happen and that yarder went off the bank. If it was me i would have been on the other side of that line that's for sure.

Interesting situation.... I guess it could be an argument to get all these backwoods outfits out of the woods and let big corps go in and do their thing. Guys running stuff nonstop from the '80s with a reactive maintenance mindset equals situations like this. Low dollar outfits on a budget running their equipment ragged - not a setup for success.
