The probably most brutal and less elegant part of Bolognese swordsmanship: Alex shows us the first five prese in Marozzo’s book from 1536. We tried to do a comparison of the sparring-friendly version and a more serious way to execute them.
This presentation of historical techniques in a fencing book from 1536 emerged primarily out of historical interest and HEMA-nerdism. We are not self-defence instructors and we do not discuss the effectiveness of this techniques in a modern, life-threatening situation. If you are looking for functional self-defence, go ask Master Ken and follow the path of Ameri-Dō-Te.

I get how people would want to apply their modern knowledge and how so many of us have cross trained in other systems. It really misses the point. Facing an armed attacker without a weapon yourself is always a bad day, and I cannot see an informed position claiming otherwise...So the importance here, to my perspective, is the one of historic context and it is pretty amazing. First, Marozzo goes there, when so many fencing systems avoid grappling or the unarmed condition. He was looking at the widest angle of martial training for his audience, and this gives us to look for the consistencies between these few unarmed techniques and the larger body of his martial advice. In other words, we can look at grappling as a fencer would, measure, tempo, technique, and perception. We can see the stepping in as using the body as a ward against the line of attack. We can also appreciate overlooking strikes and kicks as "goes without saying" to instead respond against lethal attack with only a similar level of lethality. This was a very useful video, and I am glad that you put this out. Thank you.

Always remember if someone says knife defense wont work in the streets (tm). It is always better then trying nothing 😅

All depending on having the knife hand secured first ... makes me rather sceptical

Yeah I know what you mean. Unarmed defense against an armed opponent in life threatening situation is always kinda *meh* But it was still fun trying them on Giovanni!

Trying to defend against a knife WITHOUT securing the knife hand first is suicide. There's a great video on YT showing MMA fighters trying to defend against a knifer. Spoiler: They would be bleeding to death within seconds. Compared to techniques taught in different martial arts, the positive factor is the no-nonsense attitude. No use trying to pamper the attacker, just taking them out fast and hard. But having to fight an armed attacker unarmed is a game of chance in any case.
