Ever wonder what the difference is between Grass Fed and Grain Fed beef? Have you ever wondered if they taste different, have different texture and look, and how they are raised different? We wondered the same things so we did a 9 month experiment to see what the differences were. We took some of our own steers and made some grain finished and some grass fed and documented the journey.

Another home-run. Really interesting to see things over time. I had just finished eating, but those steaks made me hungry again. Good to see the family in there too. - E

Hey thanks! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Nothing like a good looking steak to get you hungry again haha. I enjoyed involving the family in this one.

Well done, Bryan. When we raised our beef they were grass finished and without a doubt the best beef we've ever had. I don't know if it was intentional but you discovered the key. You need to let the steers grow long enough. We let ours go 24 months. I think the bad rap that grass finished gets (tough and dry) is because they get processed at 16 to 18 months like you can with a grain finished steer. I've even heard of people that will send them to the butcher at 12 months. That said, the way you finished all your beef is way different than most "grocery store beef". I love the more robust and beefy flavor of good, grass finished beef.

Thanks for the comment Bryan. I had heard that you needed to finish the grass fed beef for longer, I’ve raise 2 or 3 grass fed ones over the years and I’ve always tried to get them to around 2 years old. I was really surprised in how much I liked the grass fed one I don’t know if I can say I liked it more but I would be happy to eat either one of them if they were in front of me haha. How’s your first winter in the south been? You’ve missed a real winner this year haha

@@LuthiRanchWY it's been a good winter. Except for a few days at Christmas time it has never been colder than the mid 20's. We've had a ton of rain but I don't have to shovel it. :). It's very different getting multiple inches of rain in a day and we have to keep an eye on the news for tornado warnings. I've kept an eye on what's been happening in your area and it's certainly been one for the books.

@@LuthiRanchWY There was a stretch when we didn't have anything going on with cows, Life kinda took over for a while but then my daughter and grandson got the cattle showing bug. We had done that for years in the sixties and early seventies so now she brings a few animals up to us for the summer so it's great therapy. LoL, so it's been fairs and showing for five years now and it's been great.

The grass feed beef we buy tastes more like moose to me than grain fed does. And I agree that grain fed may be more tender. But the numbers you showed indicate grass fed is healthier to eat. How do the economics to the rancher compare? How much grain do you have to buy to get 60 lbs more meat? Great video.
@LuthiRanchWY
@LuthiRanchWY Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I had to spend $330 on grain per steer to finish them. They did eat less hay than the grass finished one did but we can put up hay alot cheaper than I can buy grain. I didn’t keep track of exactly how much hay I fed each group but if I were to guess I fed the grass fed steer 1 ton more of hay over 3 months than I fed a grain finished steer. So I would say it cost me around $150 more to finish a grain finished steer than a grass fed.

They're both really appealing on video. You're tasting proved they're both great but that's also because of the impecable feed both got. But time and again, with multiple tests, grain fed proves out to win on flavor and texture.

I raised a steer on pasture down here in San Jose, and had it butchered. It was pure muscle with zero marbling and tasted terrible. He hung out in the freezer for a few years because no one liked him, and I ended up giving it away to a coworker. Both of yours looked pretty good.

I was really happy with our grass fed beef. Thought he looked and tasted really good. I’m not sure how your pastures are down there but we get some really green lush grass up here for a decent amount of time in the summer that seems to fatten them up really nice

One of neighbors built a whole bunch of them back in the 80’s and 90’s and that’s where the one we have came from. I did a video on how we bag hay and turn it into silage. I’ll try and do a better walk through video of the bagger this summer when we use it again. It’s burried in 3’ of snow right now. I’ll put a link for that video of us bagging hay here for you kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMmUppiq0cedn2Q.html

Did you differentiate between the rib cap and below the rib cap on each steak regarding the tenderness? The rib cap I’ve noticed is way more tender and flavorful of all steak, even on a low grade rib steak. I’m not being snarky, honestly wondering. We’ve been trying different grass fed beef the last few years from different ranchers and there’s a huge difference in taste, tenderness and fat, all with being grass fed. The one we got this year was finished up in the mountains and I notice is a bit gamey tasting. Thank you for the testing as it was very interesting!!!!

It’s been about a year since I did this test but I’m pretty sure I took both of my bites from the rib cap. Like you said that’s the best part of the steak in my opinion.

You need to also measure the amounts of omega 6. With grass finished, you are avoiding too much omega 6. Oops... then you pour seed oil into the pan......sigh
