What is it about how he got into the music business that bothers you, Davvy? Just curious. I was under the impression that he was a musical prodigy from an early age , taught by his father and then cut his teeth doing small bluegrass festivals until he blew up. Seems like a humble, hardworking dude in my opinion

Been seeing Billy pretty consistently for about 2.5 years now and one thing I'll say is he has genuinely gotten so much better from the first show I saw until now. He also hasn't done a Dead song since May 2022 after he did a couple nights with Bob Weir at the Ryman. One of my favorite Dead covers (sort of) he does is Me and My Uncle in Port Chester, NY. There's a good video on KZfaq of that one if you wanna check it out!

A few years ago I heard him do a version of Peggy O, and felt like I had to see him play at the Greensboro Coliseum, and it was probably the best bluegrass show I've ever seen. They played a really good version of Samson and Delilah. He does Cassidy, which I enjoy. Super talented, so hot right now. But, I still think Drive is the best bluegrass album of all time.

From what I have gathered, this kid has been playing and grew up around music his whole life. It always seems a bit pompous for a musician to critique another young brilliantly talented from the soul performing musician, covering a Grateful Dead song, specifically Jerry Garcia guitar style especially when the individual critiquing is equally young. Like, it’s Grateful Dead, you have license to play it anyway you feel. Also, he is playing acoustic and you are playing what appears to be a Doug Irwin or Tom Lieber custom with a Garcia pickup configuration while outfitted for MIDI tech lol…. Fun Fact for those who don’t know, “Warf Rat” debuted at the Capitol Theater in Portchester, NY 2/18/71 sandwiched inside a stunningly beautiful Dark Star.

@towlie337

I didn't see anything wrong with his tone, quite frankly it was a very respectful way to look at another artist play one of the songs that (we all love) and that means alot to him and agree or disagree with how it was presented. There's nothing wrong with what he said nor in how he said it. Perhaps you need to fix your perception or just accept that opinions differ "agree to disagree" as it were. I think criticism is all too often mistaken for some kind of insult to the person/artist when that was not the intention.

But they dont get nearly enough attention unless your on the family circuit of dead enablers. Listen to Billy Strings on Theo Von’s podcast. He’s super humbled about his playing and acknowledges there are better players. He said guitar is hard for him and works hard at it.
