"When we were working on selecting the Bonus Material for the Grateful Dead Movie DVD, we looked at Jerry's long list of songs that he considered including in the original movie, and this Scarlet Begonias was one of them. It features some wonderful vocal improvisation by Donna Jean during the instrumental section at the end of the song." - David Lemieux

We've got music from every single studio album and a bevy of live albums, to boot. There are celebrated live performances from the 70s and 80s and official videos with more skeletons than you can shake your bones at, an exclusive seaside series on what's to come from the band's rich catalog and details on meet-ups all across the promised land. If it's community you’re after, try your hand at our yearly DEAD COVERS PROJECT competition and connect with fellow Dead Heads around the world. Heck, keep your eyes peeled you might even catch a glimpse of Pigpen on keys, Jerry in a GROOVE, Bobby tellin' tales, Mickey talkin' space, Phil and friends, Bill on the beach, or anyone from our extended family.

It's all happenin' right here. Subscribe and you won't miss a thing.

@@LibertyLynch The band always had an idea of what they'd play for a given show, but their improvisational style, & their tendency to wander into their vast repertoire of songs (be it their own or others) on a whim... All things considered, it's a feat they were able to recall the lyrics as well as they did 😉. The music actually did sometimes "play the band", a kind of phenomenon between band & audience no other band ever took as far as they did & something that, when it occurred. could never be reproduced in recordings regardless of sound quality & the main reason most didn't care if the lyrics weren't always correct, methinks.

@@George_D777 I completely agree, but I think when it came to a project like this, which Jerry poured his heart out into, me thinks he wanted to show the band to the world without any swing and misses. Thank goodness for the outtakes!!!

I was able to be privileged to see this movie when it was first released in movie theaters around the country and I believe it is not too hasty to say that the Grateful Dead and the Beatles were the best of all time. @@williamcolmer4184 i think the top mic was for the voice and the bottom mic was picking up all the other onstage sound and then that mic's signal phase was flipped so that when you combine both mics you get only the voice and none of the onstage sound. This design came about because originally i think the Dead wanted to hear the same PA that the crowd was hearing, so the PA system was BEHIND the band, which is pretty unusual.

The small smile when Mr. Garcia hears the chorus come back is priceless. The essence of the band playing for the beauty of music. Brother John saying, Listen, just listen. The only time he was right. Commercialized and pigeonholed later for freaks and Deadheads. I always liked them. Like a painting someone insists that you look at and declare your love it for what they see. It's beautiful. For sure. But I see it differently. Thank God they recorded this. 50 years gone by.

Then, now and eternally fond of the band As we all get Older in the way, of Dead and Company, we must remember Jerry Garcia's been recorded more than any other artist which means that there is 500 thousands ton of steal your face music put there at your fingertips. Hugely underrated. He had a ridiculously keen sense of improvisational melody, in so many flavors. Like the greatest jazz musicians. Jerry packed more tasty fretboard turns in one damn song, from one damn concert, than most guitarists ever come close to laying down. An absolute icon.

Ahh, 1974, the year I finally saw the Dead, I bought tickets in December 1968, but the Promoter was fake & then I got tickets for the weekend of my 18th birthday in 73, but that show got canceled. In May of 1974, my Bay Area cousins came down and we had a family picnic & of course a bunch of us cousins snuck up to the bushes to smoke my uncles pot & my cousins invited me up in a month to go to see New Riders Of The Purple Sage & The Grateful Dead!! What a show, and a year later I moved to the Bay Area, and saw them constantly, as well as seeing JGB in Berkeley at the Keystone. Yay!!

I've heard of this band all my life, knowing little. I know that it has a reputation for being on the road. I know the one guy's name is Garcia, and I know an 80's Mtv video hit ("Touch of Grey") rounds out the sounds of that particular decade (but doesn't begin to represent the band's legacy). There's also something about ice cream. I found the album version of this song on someone else's playlist at work four days ago. That brought me here. This (video's) recording was about a month before I was born.
