Maybe boondocking isn't in the cards for the Glampers. Once you add two kids, a dog, and two cats due to some major fails while boondocking at the EAA Airventure Show in Oshkosh, WI this year. And if Airventure is on your travel bucket list, there are some MUST-know things we talk about in this video.

I first went to Airventure in 1978 as a newly licensed private pilot. First time was a one day fly-in, fly-out. After that started flying in and tent camping under the wing. Took my then girlfriend. Remember getting ate alive by the Wisconsin state bird that year‼️🤣🤣🤣. Fast forward several years and we were tent camping with our kids…tent collapsing in storms and all…then we upgraded to a pop-up. Boys were in scouting so they had personal hiking tents for themselves for privacy…again, baaad storms. But we survived and thrived. Now, we’ve got a travel trailer & kids are grown & on their own. Haven’t been able to attend in over 10 years as I’ve always had my recurrent training (yes, airline pilot) fall right around the show. Miss it. Just so everyone knows; the true joy and meaning of the event is NOT Boeing or Airbus or even the big general aviation manufacturers. It’s the experimental builders, antique/classic enthusiasts, light sport, ultralights, warbirds, etc. go out and meet the people that make up the EAA. THIS & these people are the heart and soul of the event.

EAA Airventure has always been my "happy place" where I tent camped for years. After last year my wife encouraged me to get a travel trailer so we can have a more comfortable experience in Oshkosh. We recently got our trailer and have been so excited and doing research to make our lives easier. This research led us to your pages where I stumble across y'all at AirVenutre. It really is a full circle world! I hope you enjoyed the EAA community and Aviation in general we always love new people to come!

This was my 30th year going to Oshkosh, I camp for 11 days and I still don't see everything. I stay in a small private campground on the south end of the airport between the ultralight runway and the red barn. There is nothing like Oshkosh, it's a very special place.

Oshkosh EEA is the best. My son is a huge airplane fan, so I got him an EEA membership and took him when he was in highschool. Several year later he is a A&P Mechanic (airplane mechanic). He has volunteered for several year there. He tent camps, dont underestimate the value of the facilities at the show. The showerhouse at the south side entrance to Camp Scholler is the BEST. Private rooms, no depleting supplies or filling grey tanks. I do have a photo from Camp Shloshkosh, where he had to camp in the receiving area and there was no place to put the camper because of the mud.

We have a travel trailer and use a 4.5 kw lp generator. Bought a 20 gallon ish pba free water bag and a drill pump. Enjoy Airventure more everytime we go!

Oshkosh is fabulous. I went there as a teenager and convinced my husband to go last summer. Needless to say it has grown substantially over the years. We use our "Remove Before Flight" on our side access storage door keys on our pop up. It helps us to remember to pull the keys out when we are done using that door. Glad you were able to work through the problems and the kiddo is feeling well. PS.we have a Great Dane, we know slobber well. 😂😊

This was my first year to attend Oshkosh. I started camping in January at age 68 when I picked up a 4x8 ft squareback Tiny Camper. Had made about 6 trips with it before Oshkosh. I knew there was no power or water in the general campground at Oshkosh but I was not as prepared as I could have been. Will be better prepared next time. Awesome week long event. The night airshows are traditionally Wed and Sat nights. Be prepared to walk a lot, but its worth it. Not only was this the biggest and most attended Air Venture, of course it was the hottest/ most humid weather wise. Awesome show and friendly local people. Save a few bucks to get a flight on the Ford Tri Motor and/or a Bell 47 (MASH show). The two Tri Motors owned by EAA are meticulously maintained and well worth the price. There are showers and small grocery markets throughout the campground. There are porta potties galore that are cleaned and serviced at least daily. Come on and enjoy the biggest week in aviation in the world. Always the last week of July.

What a neat experience for your son. I was telling my husband about your motto of experiences over things and how that has to be so good for your children. So sorry you all had some not so fun things happen. Maybe if you go back someday, what you have learned will make it a better trip. I haven't been to the Oshkosh show since the 70's and it was so much smaller back then. I always wanted to fly in and camp but life happened and I never found the time. Thanks for sharing, always love following your sweet little family.

They do have generator area to park in for those that don’t have a great deal of solar available They also have a service available to have your black and gray tanks emptied and that will also provide fresh potable water The thing I wish they have but don’t, at least in 2021, was diesel delivery. We could have used that rather than leaving the campground to fill tanks

We enjoy watching your videos. Wish I knew you were there! We Love Oshkosh (this was our 5yr)! We usually boondock for 10days with our 7 youngest! Did you make it to any of the nightly movies or the museum area? If you are looking for cheap eats, there are good food options just outside the gate area. This year had the most campers ever! Always room to ride shuttle bus from show grnds to campgrnd. However, to catch the bus in the morning you need to be ready before 8am, especially if you are at the last pickup spots. Now that you've been to the largest airshow, you need to go to the largest steam show in the US....in MN!!

The last time I was at Oshkosh with the motorhome there had been epic storms in the area and the fields were saturated. No ono was allowed to enter. Try to imagine all those RVs parked absolutely everywhere in the area. Parking lots full and streets lined with RVs. It was 48 hours before I could enter and I was first one to enter a field they had just opened. The 40ft motorhome and 20ft trsiler made it o ly because I was first and able to stay to the drier area even though i was leaving serious ruts. Later on several motorhomes had to be pulled out with tractors.

Great video and perspective as non aviation geeks. This year was more stormy and hot & humid than usual. Why not just take your RV to the RV station to get water?

Your RV does not have an emergency start button that jumps house to chassis battery? If not, you should add one.

Battery issues, yes, never charge your mobile batteries off the chassis battery, as it can eliminate the chance to start your engine or generator. Also, your RV should have a battery switch that connects the house battery circuit with the power of your chassis battery, so you can start your engine off with support from your house batteries.
@GratefulGlamper
@GratefulGlamper 11 ай бұрын
It did have the switch to use the house batteries to start the engine. However when we re-did the electrical system with the lithium set up, that particular part had to be eliminated- hence a pair of jump cables do the trick.
@martyh4777
@martyh4777 11 ай бұрын
@@GratefulGlamper That is odd that the switch had to be eliminated. We have a Class A gas and I installed Li-Ion (LifePO4) batteries in place for the lead-acid house batteries. Only thing I changed out was the converter (don't have an inverter) for a model specifically for Li-Ion battery charging (yes, I installed a Li-Ion solar charge controller). Everything else stayed the same and the solutions works very well. So, yes, I still have the magic battery switch I can use to juice up my chassis batteries for a few seconds, so I can start the engine in an emergency. I am a Cert. Auto.-Mechanic, Engineer, and also worked in the Li-Ion (or modern battery industry), so - no- I don't think it wasn't necessary to remove this switch. The switch connects the house battery bank and chassis battery circuit for a few seconds only (that's why it is a rocker-switch) to add power and help with starting the engine. Yes, normally, you don't want to connect lead-acid and lithium battery circuits longer term (but this is only for a few .... like 10 seconds).
