The best movie I never want to watch again

People seem to think that the ending is the sad part of the movie but the entire movie is a tragedy because we already know that seita dies in the beginning and seeing as he's alone, we can predict that setsuko died before him. That's why the saddest moments are when you see the 2 innocent children playing and having a short but beautiful childhood because it's all going to end. Everytime you saw them happy, your heart broke because you wished that their happiness could last forever, but unfortunately it was short-lived. This movie is probably the most important movie ever made. It is an encyclopedia that teaches us that innocence and playfulness can still exist but wars and conflicts kill all hope and beauty.

this movie made me realise how lucky i am to have the things i currently do. a proper shelter, enough food, and so many other things. I can only imagine how hard it would have been for these kids to survive in those conditions. its best to always be grateful to what you have. there are people in places like africa, india living in poverty for many years. cant afford food or basic health facilities. just try to imagine what they must go through every day just in order to survive.

My body was completly dehydrated after watching this movie. 😥

you know what's more sad than the movie itself ? thousands of kids are having the same situation around the world . I swear when i have enough money I'll pay so much of it to charity to help war children

I've only watched this film once and once was enough. I felt numb after. I wont be able to watch this film again, it was too sad. Knowing its based on real life events and that this is the reality of children of war, it makes you cry :'(

The first time I watched this, I felt extremely depressed and hopeless. I didn't know how to deal with the absolute lack of any kind of happy ending. It basically left me in an avoidant, slightly confused mood, whilst at the same time, somewhat sad. This was at age 16, a young teenager full of insecurity and with much bigger concerns than really thinking about why a film was made, or what it meant. Fast forward to last night. I am age 23, and live at home with my mother and father who are foster carers; they are looking after a 4 year old girl. I was browsing through the DVD rack, and stumbled upon "Grave of the Fireflies". After reading over the back again, I decided that it was worth a re-watch, as my memory was somewhat hazy, and the blurb and reviews intrigued me. This time, the movie completely emotionally destroyed me. I cried throughout, and had a constant feeling of utter sadness. Over the past month, I have really bonded with the young girl that my parents are fostering, so much so that she almost feels like a little sister of mine. It's funny how, as an adult, truly devoting your time to the care of a young child can build up the knowledge within yourself of just how pure and important a child is. They are non-judgmental, happy, creative and unbelievably strong and positive in some of the post painful human conditions. She has gone through so much in her short life, and yet she can wake up every morning and smile. She has lost her biological parents, and yet she is so much stronger than so many adults. I realised that this film really hits that message home; children are the reason we should strive to make this world better. We must fight every day to make this world, with all of its hardship and all of its grief, a safer, happier place for the children of the world. That is why, the death of the little girl in this film, is the greatest of criminal acts committed by us adults. Whether we are the instigators of war, or the people who show reluctance and selfishness when it comes to shouldering the responsibility to look after the most vulnerable children, we are committing an enourmous crime. We can not let the children down.

I used to watch this movie in my grandpa house with my sister. We were young when you watched it, around 9 years old. We cried a lot all along. This movie may have shocked us, but I'm grateful it did. This movie and princess mononoke have taugh us humility and to be grateful for everything we have. Now you're gone grandpa. I hope that paradise exists so you can rest in peace with no suffering.

Older brothers will have the most critical damage from this movie.

Why must the fireflies die so young? WHY?!

I hope anyone who considers starting another war watches this movie, I will strap them down to a seat and make them watch it if they haven't. So many people hear the word 'War' and think "soldiers, guns, tanks, death, BANG BANG!" When there is so much more to it, this movie shows the truth of it and I hope any war starter dies if they go through with it. Anyone who doesn't even feel the slightest pang of misery isn't human. i related so much to this movie being an older sister the same age as Seita and my younger brother is about the same age as Setsuko so I was crying from start to finish. Consider watching this movie, please.

I think sometime in a child's high school life should they watch this during their lesson on World War II because we portray them to be totally evil in our schools. This war taught Japan that fighting is not the answer and that is why they will never raise arms in hate ever again.

Every time I hear the music that starts at 1:46, it makes me weep heavily and I know why. It's not just because of the part when Seita had to cremate Setsuko's dead body. It's truly all about feeling a great sadness, loss, and failure.

instant I hear the first note, I start tearing up. Living in Japan, nobody wanted to talk about the war. But they didn't need to, for this movie was enough to tell anyone war is bad.

i once tried to share this masterpiece with an ex-girlfriend, so i adviced her to give it a try, she did but she surprised me with her total indifference after watching it, she said it was boring and that she felt nothing special. i was shocked cause i always thought she was a delicate and emotional girl... no she wasn't , so i started to think there's something wrong with her but forgot about it easily... few days after i discovered bad things about her, she was definitely not a person i can trust or rely on and we brooke up. since that day, i use the "Grave Of The Fireflies Test" in every serious relationship: if you don't tear! then u're a feelingless person! :D

This is a movie that teacher should show to is student, and I mean EVERY teacher in this world,And maybe fot the futures generations, we shall have a better world. Im dead serious here, Obama have to watch this movie. This can be a "weapon" of peace in the world.

I watched this movie with my 9 year old sister and 4 year old brother. They really appreciated it despite how tragic and depressing it is

didn't cry watching the movie, but it made my heart feel so heavy..

I was about 5-6 years old, when my parents got me the collection of anime on one DVD. I watched it constantly, basically every day. And when I watched Grave of the fireflies, I didn't understand the thing. Sure, I realized that it was sad, and what the thing was about. But I just didn't understand why my parents cried so much. I continued watching it over and over, but when I started school, I just forgot about it for a while. Then, when I was a bit more mature (about 12) and remembered about DVD's existence, I watched it again. I realized what it was all about, and why it was so sad. I felt sad and broken, but still didn't cry. I was always sensitive when someone talked about war, especially WWII, since I am Russian and had relatives who fought for my country back then. As I grew up, I became more and more sensitive about it. Now I'm 14, and I bet that I would cry my soul out if I watched it again, since only listening to this, made me cry really hard. The same thing, in fact, happened to Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku Hen and Harry Potter and the deathly hallows: part two (the scene where Snape's past is shown... god). When the violin part had begun, I thought about learning it on my violin and playing it for money in my town's main street. A few seconds later, I realized that I couldn't do that, as I would start crying.

Seriously, stop with the "manliness" business. If you don't cry to this movie, you're no man, barely even human. 3/24/20 - I normally dislike editing my own comments, but I made this comment over 6 years ago when I had just seen the movie for the first time. It left a major impression me. I don't mean to declare you inhumane for not crying, but I what I meant was that in the context of its incredibly humane message, it never talked about who was at fault, "us" vs "them" between countries, just invited viewers to see and understand what it was like for fellow human beings to go through such harsh circumstances. My grandmother's village was bombed during this time, and she also had to take care of all of her younger siblings at a young age after losing her mother years prior. I was born in the U.S., but I personally hate the boasting some people in my country have made about dropping the atom bombs. I understand that some had fought and died to enemy troops, saying they deserved it for attacking us first, etc. This movie invited us to remember that these many people were human beings who had nothing to do with the actions of their government. I eventually married my wonderful wife who is also from Japan, which since this time has helped me grow in more understanding of how little our differences in ethnicity really matter. I felt this film was about humanity, the common struggles we go through, and how petty our differences really are in the end. It focused on the part of war that most films never touch on, the common people. That's why I feel it does surprise me if you are not in the least moved by it, but in the end, it might not be a movie for everyone.

this movie opened my eyes to how I see the world properly and always be thankful and grateful for what I have grave of the fireflies isn’t just a movie it’s a piece of reality.

I watched this film like 3 times and just thinking about it makes me cry. This is the most emotional film I've ever watched and there won't be any film which has touched me like this

Now this part really messed me up....at least Seita and Setsuko found each other again as spirits....may they fly on with the fireflies. Oh god, now I'm crying..... I hate to see Seita take little Setsuko and hold her there like that on that stormy night....and then the next day.....the next day I can't even bear to put this in words its so sad. Poor Setsuko...when she offers the rocks and dirt, thinking she made rice balls.... :"(

In the beginning of the film, after the bombing, when Setsuko said: "The black rain after bombs." I assumed they were going to die due to radiation, but thats was not the case. The fact that they died due to malnutrition made it even more sad. seeing these two kids slowly die of starvation, while being treated like filth by everyone around them was heart wrenching.

This movie totally broke my heart...:( The song is a masterpiece...broke my heart again....

It's an anime movie from Studio Ghibli (year 1989). I watched it with tears all over my face! T_T This movie is very haunting and obsessing, if you're not ready you can't even watch till the end. The most touching and meaningful anime movie I've ever seen. T_T

last time I watched this movie was like 3 years ago. Decided to come back and just listen to the THEME song. That was enough to make me cry and feel depressed all over again... What a powerful movie!

I feel the whole "sad" thing is detracting from how impressive this film actually is. Yes it's sad, but there are so many reasons this film is fantastic and deserves to be watched by everyone.

This is one of those movies that i need to re watch once a year at least. So good yet so sad. This movie is based on a book with the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka and it's even more ruthless than the movie.

I lost my baby brother. He wasn't a baby when he died. He had just turned 18. But he was never not my baby brother - I was 29 at the time. But I held him as an infant. And he took his own life on my watch. Some wounds never heal and perhaps are never meant to. It gives me solace, that there are others, who have translated that profound pain into something that is beautiful in its sorrow. I pretend in front of people, act like I'm ok, and I'm terribly convincing. But the truth is, I'm a ghost. I've already died as well, because how can I ever allow something good in my life, when he hasn't gotten a chance to experience any of it.

I was so messed up after I watched this movie that I had to take off work the next day. I couldn't even deal dude.

It gets so real at 4:19 ! Then the flute just sealed it! This is so beautiful.......

The more you rewatch it, the more beautiful it gets...that's how good movies always are. Too bad too many people are like "It's too sad, I can't rewatch it...". Make me think you just barely scratched the surface of it and immediately jumped to comment.

I never cried so much watching a movie in my life......This movie touched my heart to the very core..... It shows how innocent children becomes the victim of war..... This movie made me realize how lucky I am to have a family, food and shelter....I pray for all the innocent souls who suffered and died because of war...

I just watched the movie. Everybody knows Schindler’s List or Saving Private Ryan as examples of sad and powerful war movies but this one, in my opinion, surpassed them.

Many people are saying that they cried but I can bet you all that I cried the most,like 6 times for 4 minutes or more. It just touched me right in the feelings and I thought that my heart is going to pop...

I don't know why but I think showing this anime movie to the countries who are going forward for war will stop the war and their people will not have to suffer🙂 I feel sad for Ukraine people,I don't want to see another hiroshima nagasaki kind of destruction.War does no good to the common people,I can't imagine the anime movie situation is going to happen again.I don't want many real setszuko to die because of the war.How can a child see so much hatred,violence he will spend his life in trauma.After watching the movie I took an oath to not waste a single bite of food.I pray to god that no wars happen in the world again.Rest in peace all the people who died in war.I'm literally crying while typing all this+the bgm and dialogues are making me shed more tears.....

The movie is something special to me. But everyone I play it, I cry uncontrollably. The tears flow very fast. Studio Ghibli at its very best. As an English fan of their work, I define anyone to watch the film, whether it is with English subtitles or the English Dub version, to not cry. I bet none of you can. This film is just Brilliant!!

That was just so touching for me, i seriously didn't believe it could end like the way it ended (i wont spoil anything..), so i watched it again.. i was like "oh damn, why it has to end like this :'( i can't believe it.." I suggest it to adults mostly.

Oddly, I only cried once, and almost instantaneously after "Why must the fireflies die so young?". I only teared up during the other sad scenes.

Recently watched this movie. Im 16 and man it's been a while since I've cried pretty hard. I didn't believe my sister when she said that this movie would make me cry. A movie hasn't had me at the edge of my seat in a while but this movie had my complete attention. I felt torn and I think of things far differently. I feel as if recently the world lacks movies like this or really anything similar to any of the movies from this studio. Ive started to watch many others and I'm hooked. The youth of today need movies like these that really build character. Hope all is well.

Life is a gift. Our emotions are being stirred. If we can feel these emotions then it means your heart and feelings inside are grand and special.many people take life for granted and don't care about themselves when we are standing strong and filled with that intense fun spirit we have forgotten about what has happened to the people that are victims dying with no food or parents or anything we are cheap and childish when I and many many others see and expirience that feeling we know inside that life is even harder and more depressing for those victims.

Idk I actually did not cry the first time I watched. But just today, my sister asked me to watch this movie. So finally years after, I finally rewatched the movie and boi, I did not cry the first time right, but in just 5 mins of the movie, I was bawling in tears. I did not expect it. Especially when this ost was played the first time. I say that this movie gets sadder and sadder everytime u watch it. If you ddnt feel much at first watch like me, u shoudl rewatch it and ull get hit by the reality of how tragic this is.

I watched this movie last night. It is all I have thought since then.

Hey we shouldn’t feel bad for seita and setsuko they’re living it up in heaven doing anything they could imagine, from eating five course meals to flying around the heavens with each other and their family!

This movie hit different because its so real, this worldly life does not always have a happy ending

So far I have watched only 4 studio ghibli movies; grave of the fireflies, spirited away, howl's moving castle and princess mononoke. Strangely, it has a bittersweet feeling watching those, I have never ever felt those emotions watching Disney. Studio Ghibli is like as a whole a genre that never makes me depressed but never makes me happy too. I just always end up crying and everything else around me just seems a studio ghibli setting.

Like some others have said before, I also think that this movie should be shown to all high school students at least once. Aside from the insanely rich and powerful, there were probably hundreds of normal civilians like Seita and Setsuko who had to suffer through the mess that their own leaders created. This happens in all wars; you just have to dig deeper into what happened within those countries on both sides during those times other than viewing them from the general viewpoints of good and evil

The world evolves into a fairyland and paints itself from the ruins of so many Seitas and Setsukos who were seemingly a bother. Who were tossed into cruel currents of fate without even taking a glimpse at their age and innocence. How can two fireflies be too much to care for; why would anyone call them pests. Remember the scene where the box in which are ashes of their mother glows to red and then comes two fluttering fireflies flying almost carelessly. Fireflies are shortlived. How much longer would it take for me to accept this fact. :(
