Grave Talks Episode 5: The Greene Family & Nathanael's Missing Bones

Over 122 years ago, a mystery regarding the bones of founding father, Major General Nathanael Greene, was laid to rest in a ceremony that journeyed from Colonial Park Cemetery to Johnson Square in Historic Downtown Savannah. In September of 2022, we chatted with Greene descendent Kevin George Greene in this very spot about his ancestor's missing bones, the cotton gin, ‪@TheSavannahBananas‬ and more.
As part of our day, we also took the Greene family on a special historical walk mirroring the funeral procession of Major General Nathanael Greene, through Downtown Savannah to Colonial Park Cemetery. Along the way, we came across musician and professor Jamie Keena, historical reenactor Aaron Bradford of Liberty Encounters, and historian and musician Chase Anderson, who delighted with unique presentations honoring the Major General and his family. We didn't want such a lovely day to end, but this episode ensures we can remember it always, and best of all, share the experience with you!

I think history is why I love Savannah so much. Every step you take, every corner you turn, it’s nothing but history. Sad there are many young people that don’t care about history any more. Of course I knew of Nathanial Green, and Eli Whitney but it was still nice to hear some things I didn’t know about. Thank you for continuing to bring interesting videos to us.

Why was Caty buried on Cumberland Island and not with Nathanael originally in Colonial Park?

Great question and while not initimate with say the "paperwork" of those details, one can simply say that Georgia had really become her home, and Cumberland's "Dungeness" very much so. I don't recollect all of the circumstances less to say she was not relieved of being heavily indebt untl quite near the end of her life and Cumberland was perhaps paying some of the bills but not all. Eli Whitney's brother was on the island and Eli himself kept promising his return but was frankly was sort of a flimsy fellow in some respects and think the promises were empty along with seeing more opportunities for himself without her or the phantom of ever getting rightful return on the "their" gin project. The subject is somewhat addressed in The Remains of Greene where there were some family squabbles, some legal about where the remains truly belonged. Georgia being the winner there but I'm less troubled by her on Cumberland than the fact that they aren't buried together but same time love that she's buried near the beach where she and Nathanael really had such blissful times, ever escapist. Cumberland made them feel young again and away from the world's troubles so to me its fitting that Nathanael's "heart" is there even if his literal heart is buried in New England and other parts of him elsewhere but that's another story for another time! To think Caty died never knowing that as she passed from this world The British had just burned The White House to the ground.
