A lot of us formerly dark brunette types wonder if using Overtone would help blend the demarcation line and make it less noticeable. At 7 months into my gray hair transition, I decided to give it a try!

I use Extreme Silver but I leave it on much longer...at least an hour. I don’t have a line though. With your hairstyle you could easily get rid of the demarcation line with a few foils of bleach highlights done before using the extreme silver.

I just went through this. Took me 2 years to fully grow out. I was SOOOOO WORTH IT. I love my silver/white hair. I was a hair dresser for 20 years. At the point you are in growth, as long as there is no blaech on your ends or colored part, you could do a highlight to blend the demarcation line . Then use a blue or purple shampoo.The product yiu used in this video has some sort of die in it. Even if no proxide is use it will still deposit... which means it can get darker on the ends if the ends are poriss. I personally didnt bother. My hair at the time was long and i put it in a MESSY bun EVERYDAY. LOL. How ever you get there it will be great when you do.

After watching many videos, I think a couple highlights might be the way I go if I get to a point where I am annoyed by the demarcation line. I have long hair also, thanks for the messy bun tip.

I’m about where you are re grow-out. I used black the other day, but only applied to the brassy bottom part. Left gray alone. Love it!

I think you need to use more. My hair is thick and I had the larger tub. It was good for 2 uses, half each time to make sure it covered everything and was saturated. My hair was blonde and I was using the golden brown. The 1st round I wasn't crazy about it bc it was too honey yellow instead of honey brown. I ended up buying the daily conditioner in brown to mix in which definitely helped get the desired look. I also suggest a toner and daily conditioner for the gray. It'll help maintain the color since overtone does wash out eventually. 👍👍

I'm doing it differently than you...I put my last ever box color of chestnut brown on in the 1st w/e of Oct. '20...letting the white/silver roots grow in until next Spring. Using a clarifying shampoo about every 3 weeks to lighten the box color until Spring. Getting regular trims every 8 weeks of about an inch. Then likely in May using a professional color correcting remover used by colorist to try and lighten up three levels of what ever color there is left. Then a using a professional permanent color remover to remove the rest of the left over box color. If there is still a slight color left I will continue to use my clarifying shampoo to help lift the color and continue to get every 8 week trims. Hoping by summer's end to be fully without box color and just use purple shampoo and conditioners to maintain. At least, that is my plan.

I think its really hard to get rid of that demarcation line. This is fabulous, because it atleast blended it and the seperation isn't so stark? Is that the word? I really like it. Makes me want to try it. - but i am a lot earlier in the process of deciding to change. I have a darker brown with highlights all thru it and greys peaking back in that refuse to stay colored, or mostly even be colored. I had a good stylist for a bit that could blend blond highlights in and make it not so overwhelming for me (I don't really care about what anyone but hubby thinks, and he just wants me happy) but she got married and moved away, and I haven't been able to find anyone since that could do properly. I have health issues and just don't want "overwhelming" all over the place when I look in the mirror, but just too exhausted and on a budget that wouldn't allow for all the trouble of keeping it colored. I am now 45, and I don't think thats a bad age to get started, but the demarcation scares me. On me it just looks really dirty and like I don't care about myself, and more sickly - not just drab, or whatever others say about the process. Have thought about dying it all silver or lilac if it was a simple as just being for the fun of it, but bleach terrifies me in fragile, fine and thin hair. But it has been my only happy thought/idea on this. i've thought about boxed color that promises to hide grey, but i am finally atleast at a point where ask what is the point on that. I guess i am just rambling. I apologize and I am sorry for the typos. But even tho this was kind of subtle, it did blend things much nicer I think, and I think, but not sure, that overtone is actually good for your hair? I need to research more. Many blessings!!

Personally I did not see a difference at the end. I think you should lighten the dark part and then apply the silver overtone.

your hair looks great! Overtone didn't work super well for me (because my dyed dark hair was so dark) but I bet it will work on yours! Your hair looks fantastic, btw!

I'm thinking about low lighting a few thin lowlights and then overtoning. 🤔 I wonder if that can get me the nice blended look without an obscene amount of bleach and dyes. My colors are almost identical to yours.

It’s really hard to predict what the outcome will be like but just make sure that you go to an experienced stylist and get a consultation before hand. Make sure she shows you before & after photos so you can feel confident that she knows what she’s doing ♥️

Did you apply and fully saturate the brown? I didn't notice but I would expect more cool tone deposit on the dyed bits aswel

I did. I think my hair was just way too dark for this to work properly at the time. Now that I'm fully gray, it probably would (but no need for it now as I like my natural color).

If the orangey-red color was a permanent dye, you will not be able to use Overtone on it. It will only work on blonde hair. You could use a Demi/Semi color shade that is close to your root color to help with the demarcation, as Demi/Semi will fade.

Thanks for your review. My hair is brown with about 40% grey streaked through it. I don't have a line, but I'm not sure what degree of color I need...the pastel or extreme?

I would send photos of your hair to the team at Overtone and they can advise you. They are SUPER Helpful - just find their customer service email and send them photos and what the result is that you are hoping to get. Good luck!

I think nothing from the overtone will work on your Hair because the old colour is too dark and overtone is only a direct toner it s only to refresh your old colour so that it gets brighter or if your already have a lighter colour than you can use it. I would think the best way to break the line would be to make Highlights.

I don’t know what this overtone stuff is. I know we have toner and there is mineral hair colors and Hannah colors toner can be semi permanent to Demi permanent hair often for pure gray hair. That’s not too poor us we’re still gonna need some degree of peroxide to get any color tone.

This photo is old. You can see an updated photo on my Instagram @katiegoesplatinum. It grows very quickly, actually - even with frequent trims. Of course, salons being closed in CA since March meant I had quite long hair for a while :-)
