www.gilhedley.com In this video I explain the difference between gray matter and white matter in the brain, with some discussion of myelin sheathes. For more detailed explorations of the brain through on camera dissection, see the 7th video in the Integral Anatomy Intensive found in both the Easy Rider and Explorer memberships on my site, Enjoy!

I love the words you use and the images your create: shrine table (so perfect); "coastline"; arachnoid as "drapery". I makes the learning so much easier and relatable. And yes, with thanks to the Captain-and you!

Thank you so much! Although all these other videos explained things similarly, being able to see a real (not a diagram) really helped solidify my understanding! Thank you so much!

Gil, curious about your thoughts on this, What do you find to be the relation between THC use and grey matter reductions, and what does this imply on a holistic scale? With you deep understanding of the brain and body, would you warn against the use of cannabis as a therapeutic tool as it weakens the sensitive processes of the grey matter facilities of the neocortex? Thanks, you’re the best!

Hi Aidan! THC is medicine to my mind, and like all medicines there are downsides, especially if overused. Too much of a good thing becomes not a good think~ Thanks for adding this here!

Thank you so much for this! I'm wondering if you could explain gray and white matter as it relates to Alzheimer's disease. I've seen my mom's brain scans and the doctor has told me that too much white matter has led to her cognitive dysfunction

From my limited knowledge base I am actually under the impression that Alzheimer's is accompanied by a thinning of the myelin layers...blessings on your family Christine~

So, we’re supposed to have more white than gray, in a typical brain, right? What happens if the percentages are equal?

What you said about reflexes, so when persons were exposed to extreme gamma rays initially no effect, yet after awhile they developed symptoms of radiation poisoning. Question is why the delay, if the rad density is that much and the energy so concentrated... why does biology react slow? Is it all of the mind... reality is thought only?

The experience in human biology along your questioning is a key area of interest to NASA scientists whose astronauts have lived on the International Space Station for various lengths of consecutive days. The research shows that some systems display a change from Earth gravity normal within a few hours or days and some only negatively react after weeks or months of continuous exposure. The strange things is that some systems regardless of less of exposure return to baseline normal within days of return to earth and others up to a year or more never seem to return to Earth normal. Space travel just seemed so benign and normal in the days of Star Trek. As Spock would say, "Fascinating!"

@Barry Craig a bit more than Spock said, and yes, something more than physicality is omnipresent.

Radiation poisoning is likely just what happens when part of the body is kept from cleaning itself normally. The body probably doesn't expect continual exposure to radiation.
@wayneeligur7586

@@ThePallidor Yep, what gets my attention is the amount of initial exposure [a lot] with small effect usually then later the onset of complete bodily shut down, which varies from case to case, some recover o.k. My idea is the layering of the body hundreds of thousands say, and the immune function, overall health, sure, yet the mental [mind over matter] component is the elephant in the room for me. How many books on spontaneous remission have been researched and written? Not nearly any. This compounds the issue a lot
