Always cracked me up how everyone has always thought what a wholesome movie this was because of Olivia Newton-John. Yet it has teen smoking and drinking, potential teen pregnancy, very close to a sexual assault, mention of a gang bang, and Greased Lightning is one of the dirtiest songs ever written, especially for the 70s. 😂

I think people underrate Rizzo's story... She was dating Danny before the summer, and then he fell in love during summer with someone else! So that's why she and her friend group were kinda mean to Sandy and why Rizzo made fun of her. After the sleepover she tried to make Danny jealous by flirting with his friend but he didn't care at all, that has to hurt. Kenickie was the only one to treat her right but she didn't trust that any more. She lied about him being the father to get him off the hook. And when she sings her songs she talks about how she goes out with a lot of guys but she never double crosses them. Great reaction!

That's the way I (and most of us) viewed it when first I saw it in the theater in 1978. Rizzo is definitely an under appreciated character that a lot of younger audiences don't seem to get. She has as much of a character arc as the two leads.

I love Rizzo’s “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” song so much. Rizzo is one of those characters you hate as a kid but as you grow up you realize that even though she acted tough and like she didn’t care she only did that because she felt really vulnerable and she was actually really hurt by Kinickie calling the baby a mistake (even though I don’t think he meant it that way) so that’s why she lied about it not being his but of course both she and Kinickie actually adored each other and were both really hurt by the misunderstanding.

That's pretty much why I sang the song in my jazz recital. The whole programme was called, "There are worse things I could do", and most songs were about/from the perspective of women in extreme love-related situations. "Love for sale", and another German prostitute song "Nur für's Geld" (only for the money), Kate Bush's "Wedding List", etc. But Rizzo, full of passion and trying to find love and her place in the world, was the inspiration.

Grease was originally a very popular Broadway Musical and then made into a movie. Olivia Newton John was a very popular singer in the ‘70’s and John Travolta was a movie star. So for both of them this was challenging their talents. When this movie came out it was very popular!!! I remember going to the movie theatre at least 3 or more times to see it. When Sandy and Danny drive off into the sunset, Sandy looks back with a smile and a wave... Oof, that hits so differently now. I can't help but tear up. Sweet and genuine human. ONJ will be greatly missed. Since yous guys seem to be jonesing for a deep dive into ONJ's catalogue, I can't encourage it enough! What's kind of gnarly to think about is that like Cher, ONJ had eras ... the early 70s was like her folk/country era, mid-70s contemporary pop era, and late 70s disco/pop rock-ish era, 80s pop, 90s new age, 00s kind of came full circle going back to her roots to country-ish Just food for thought... No matter what, you can't go wrong with ONJ, she's friggin' awesome!

Olivia just recently passed away. This is one of the best musicals ever produced. Just so much fun. It has been reproduced in just about every high school drama class in the nation. John Travolta suggested Olivia Newton-John for the movie and he won thank goodness she's perfect for the part of Sandy. The two remained lifelong friends, unfortunately for John it was the third woman he cared for to lose a battle with breast cancer his first love Diana Hyland, his wife Kelly Preston and now Olivia rest in peace to those beautiful ladies. I did see that a church in the Netherlands had the Bells tolling the tune hopelessly devoted to you in honor of Olivia Newton-John which brought me to tears. Great movie I had been a fan of Olivia Newton-John before the movie I grew up listening to her music. Beautiful voice, soul and a hell of a fighter rest in peace Olivia Newton John Heaven choir just got a whole lot sweeter.

The guardian angel in white singing to Frenchie is Frankie Avalon. He was a teen idol in the 50's and 60's. Mostly because of his music like *Venus* but in the 60's he did several beach movies with previous Disney Mousketeer Annette Funicello. It came out in 1978, but was based of the 50s. At the time Sandy (Olivia was 29), Danny (John Travolta was 23) even tho their characters are supposed to be about 17 or 18. The actress who played Rizo the one who thought she was pregnant, her real name Stockard Channing was actually 33 at the time of filming. I was 2 years old when this movie came out, so really didn't pay attention till I was older in the 80s when I came on TV. 😎👌📽️🍿 R.I.P Olivia Newton John.✝️. @@viacrucis2509 yeah - they used hyperbole because it's a musical and the exaggerations make it funny. But the stuff that they exaggerated still came from real things. They even referenced the popular belief, at the time, that mixing aspirin and Coke made people drunk (e.g. Marty says to Rizzo in the restroom at the drive-in, "I caught Vince Fontaine trying put two aspirin in my Coke at the dance"). Not even "American Graffiti" nailed that one.

Grease got its start as a local theater musical in Chicago before moving to Broadway in 1972 where it was a smash hit, becoming the longest running show (at the time). Some of the actors in the movie, like Jeff Conway and John Travolta were in the stage version. Travolta played the role of Doody in the national tour. At the time Grease came out in the theaters in 1978, I was 9 years old and being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional household. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV and went to the movies as a way of providing myself with escape and comfort from my misery. Back then I was going to the movies with my then best friend. We were a couple of fanatics about the movies. We talked, read, ate, drank, and slept the movies. And we went to the movies together once a week, every week for a lot of years from the 1970s-1980s. We saw literally hundreds upon hundreds of movies over the years. We tried to see every new movie that came out regardless of plot, genre (he loved horror films, I preferred comedy), critics reviews, who was starring in it, etc. So there was no particular reason we went to see Grease. It just happened to be a new movie that was just released. As much as I loved the moviegoing experience in itself, you wouldnt think a movie musical such as Grease would appeal to a 9 year old boy. But being an abused, neglected child, Grease managed to hit me in the very right places at the very right time. Right from my very first viewing, it quickly became one of my all time favorite movies and remains that to this day. After seeing the movie, later on I would buy the Grease soundrack record album, the Grease bubble gum trading cards, and the Grease fotonovel. In the following years, whenever Grease popped up on tv, I'd drop everything to watch it. Today I own the movie on DVD. So, I say to the cast and crew of Grease, from the bottom of the heart of a young, abused boy, thank you. Thank you all so very, very much

She was honestly one of the most genuine, kindest woman in show business. She never tired of speaking about her experience with cancer in the hopes of helping other people with their own struggles. She lent her name to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia and donated tens of thousands through fundraisers. She will be forever missed. Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was the oldest at 33. Travolta was 23, Olivia Newton-John turned 29 during filming.
