Thank you Lloyd for such a gem of a video. As a beginner, I naturally do not have the fluidity, deeper edges and correct knee bends, weight transfer/placement etc. So it was a struggle. Your video explained all that n showed me where to start at the basic level so I can work my way up. All your tutorials r of very high quality n so helpful. Thank you. All the best in 2021!

And thank you so much for all these videos! It's interesting how all my coaches used to tell me that I had to twist the body and i never managed to make this move smooth, always scratching the ice

Jeez, such close footwork, so smooth, incredible, awesome. Brings terror to my heart having snagged my blades more than once. If anyone could take a more ignominious splat I'll eat my blades. You have an unusually fluid technique. It's just something very special.

You make this look so elegant and easy. Is it harder in hockey skates? I wear hockey skates, and this was so scary. I’m starting to get it, after a year of trying. I’m told that I used to have a look of terror on my face. I’m 59, adults like me are such scardy cats.

The first while as I tried to learn that, I just couldn't figure it out at all! It wouldn't work. Once things snapped into place, I realised that my problem had been weight distribution. I had tried setting the foot backwards fully first to then try transferring my weight. But the weight is actually shifted backwards.... midstep, I guess? It's more like letting myself lean into the backwards motion? And that part is actually quite scary at tge beginning. Simply because there's that feeling that I might gain speed and my feet might fail to catch up. X'D And yet it's surprisingly comfortable as long as the timing is right. Thank you for pointing out the hip twisting issue and showing how the free legs are travelling. I've been moving my free legs backwards in a wide half cycle (hello ballet motion) and it occasionally threw me off balance.

That's an interesting point! I too have problems with the weight shift and am realizing that I too have been doing what you did - cross fully before transferring. I'm re watching that part in the vid about weight transfer and the push. I find I dont have the leverage to push one I cross the foot back.... shifting the weight backwards. I'll keep that in mind with this vid. Love learning small things like that because someone can tell you to do something but not really teach you how to think about what you're doing or where to put the weight on the blade or how to use your knees to make something work.... This channel and comments like yours are helping with that. Thanks!

@@MsLadyFuchsia RIGHT?!!! I'm the same. When things don't work but look easy and are clearly not labelled expert level, it's usually some minor detail. Something that the pros do without even thinking. While a beginner may be lacking some little step on their way. And then you either are lucky and accidentally stumble into "it feeling right" (followed by the painstaking search of how to reproduce it and what made it work) OR someone did the analysis already an cares to share it where you can find it 😂. And sometimes the answer is so simple that I don't know if to laugh or cry. Like: "Get a pro to sharpen your blades" or "practice pick-heel-pick-heel sideway steps, it helps your Twizzles" or "Don't press into the ice when you're trying to get your 3-turn to work". A community is needed for such matters. Every group of ppl encounters another problem within the same exercise. 🤣

@@KxNOxUTA omg exactly! It took me well into years of adult skating when I finally realized the importance of pick-heel and weight transfer in 3 turns (I stumbled upon that one). No one explained that to me, so backward 3 turns were hard and scary (thanks @Ice Coach Online for that exercise on pick-heel sideway steps!). And I think that the same goes with jumps....they just say, pick your toe in and jump, without really explaining the feeling you should be feeling to make it work - the draw back, weight, momentum, leverage to make the jump happen, etc. Totally agree with you on all points!!!

Would you consider these to be back cross strokes? I have been working on getting the rip noise in the back cross strokes and you do it quite nicely in your video. Thank you for your videos.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos. I have never heard the term backward cross strokes myself. It could be due to there being a different name for it in your country. Where are you based? That rip noise is like the ice telling you "good job" 👍 .

I am an adult skater from Wyoming, USA. I am working on the Adult Silver Moves in the Field. They are call forward and backward Cross Strokes in the Moves booklet. I really think they are the same as your tips have helped me hear the rip noise.

Lloyd, can you please drop a comment why to bend or when exactly? 😬 I feel like I make a move when I push the ice with the leg that becomes free in a second , and anytime I bend seems to be too artificial for me and looks like unnecessary effort 🤷‍♀️
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this one before! You need to deepen your knee bend as soon as you move your free leg back. you do this because you are trying to generate more pressure into the ice to get ready to push. Doing so is what creates that crunch sound as you grip the ice and push. Does this make sense? If it doesn't i can try to explain it again! - Lloyd

Backwards crossovers are completely different and much easier. I can do them quite well, but backwards crossrolls scare the life out of me, mainly because I can’t figure out where my feet should go!
