Twice a year, the deserted Bonneville Salt Flats are transformed into the Valhalla of speed where land speed racers battle it out to claim a record. There's no prize money just the glory of saying you beat the clock. These speed freaks bring everything from jet-powered monsters to old roadsters to see who can claim the bragging rights until next year. Our in car cameras, long lenses and roving crews capture the drama of the racers who've decided to shift their dreams into high gear.

I am 70 now...but when a teen in the 60s, Bonneville was a big deal for a few Salt Flat competitors from my tiny town of Eureka, California which is about 270 miles north of San Francisco. My neighbor was a master machinist and us kids in the neighborhood would hang out at his house as he worked on his car (he had a lot of patience to put up with us)....a Ford roadster and later a Bantam roadster. He did get into the 200 mph club with the second car. This was in the era of Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons jet cars. In addition the local junior college, Redwood Jr. College had a diesel powered stream liner that did break the worlds record for that class I believe. I remember the hours put into my neighbors car....and the goal was that hat. To me that was the purest form of the racing sport. As a result of that exposure I have always been a car nut...road racer and sports cars....but not a Salt Flat racer ;-) Great memories!

Has anyone used a 4G63 4 cylinder at bonneville? These engines if built right can handle 80 psi boost and make 1,500 horsepower with the stock block. The billet block versions are well over 2,000 horsepower. That could push that cobalt powered bullet car well into the 400 mph range!

The new belly tan car was over done. It had too much suspension grabbing wind and was unnecessary for the task of going straight for a few miles. A friend of mine has a kid with a Cobalt that's supercharged, I'm not sure what mods he's done, enough to break parts on a regular basis. I took a ride with him in it and Lord have Mercy, the thing is brutal. He claims it'll spin the front wheels in fourth gear at 70 or 80 mph. Just stomp the gas pedal and shred the tires. It's sitting behind his dad's shop now gathering dust, he couldn't leave the loud pedal alone and can't afford to keep pouring money and parts into it. I will say the motor itself has held up, they are a well designed tough little power plant.

Boy you couldn’t be more wrong. Over the last several years (except 2018) the course has been a kidney splitting wreck if it didn’t get rained out altogether. I worked as a roving patrol on course 1 (the ‘long course’ - 9 miles - 5 under power + 4 shutdown) and have had some of the toughest, fastest dudes on earth getting their asses kicked in unsuspended vehicles. Tons of spins and broken driveline parts from washboarding at speed too. But the suspended cars, especially those with downforce, could do far better speeds and the drivers weren’t getting their bells rung. Everyone thinks it’s easy to go straight, fast. It ain’t. I’ve been going myself on and off since 1970 and grew up going. My dad got in the 200 MPH Club in 1969 and was the fastest open-wheeled driver on earth until 1975 when he crashed and lost his paw

The Salt Flats are not 14,000 years old but actually date back to the draining of teh water of Noah's Flood 4,350 years ago. Water was trapped in the basin formed by the mountains and evaporated away concentrating the salt. Each year teh winter rains refill and dissolve all the salt and then the summer sun dries it off rady fo racing except in the years when the extraction company drained too much brine to process into sodium.

The hotrod records are not governed by the FIA - who does have that rule. there are people who are trying to have the time between runs lengthened due mostly to the fact that a hundred years ago, when the rule was first written, the cars involved simply turned around and drove in the opposite direction. With an 800 MPH car though, the safety checklist after a run is massive and without maybe 50 people to do it in addition to turn the car around, during which time, checking cannot safely be done, that one hour time frame is a major challenge to say the least. In 1997, Craig Breedlove did not make it in the hour. The SCTA and other hotrod sanctioning organizations had a summit over this issue in the early 1990s. The crux of the matter was that, while the records set within the hotrod organizations did require two runs, the magnitude of being able to do so and run an event with 400 and now more competitors simply made the two impossible to do together. The predominant amount of competitors, myself included, are low bucks back yard guys. The maintenance and the safety check lists alone take a few hours between each run. In the interests of safety, with the appalling conditions of the Bonneville Salt Flats at present also dictated that the direction and placement of the courses no longer allowed for safe running in the opposite direction. The requirement to have two opposite direction runs was waived a few years ago due to this.

The push truck was actually neither; it was a GMC Canyon (ancestor of today’s Chevy Colorado!), turbo-ed up to add an extra 130 hp, among a few other customized niceties. But it's not surprising that the commentator assumed it was a Syclone. GMC produced just under 3,000 of them in 1991, and the it was the first truck to break 200 mph at Bonneville in 1991. The Syclone was also just enough of an upstart to inspire Car and Driver to send it up against - and best - a Ferrari 348t. To this day, it is considered a cardinal sin to bring up the incident in Maranello.

Genius is what Burt Munroe did with a 47 year old Indian V twin with only 953 cc in the under 1000 cc class. 184 miles per hour. He used an engine from 1920 and set the record in 1967. He cast his own aluminum pistons in his garage and welded and ground his own cams until he got it all right! In 1920 that engine pushed the motorcycle to a top speed of 55 miles per hour... Now that, is genius!!

I have been a Bonneville racer for going on 48 years now...I have also drag raced and been involved in building cars and motorcycles for both of those motorsports as well as others. In my years of racing, I have seen A LOT of people like you - who seem to have ALL of the answers (only - you just do not seem to know what questions to put them beside) and you make comments just like you did. That car that never did go faster than the Auto Union special never had a chance to as it got destroyed in a wreck before larger, more powerful engines got installed in it - and believe me when I say, the SoCal team was eyeing faster engines.... Had that car not been wrecked, a 300 inch hemi with a blower on it would have put that car into the books withs seeds a long way into the 200s or even the low 300s. They went fast with other cars and fast engines in later years. There are names that I would say that most, if not all of my Bonneville land speed friends would say I would be justified in calling you, but I will refrain. Suffice it to say that I would like you to tell us all what you really do know about building land speed cars and running them at high speeds that qualifies you to be so wise and knowledgeable so as to make such a dismissive statement of great achievements that took place nearly 70 years ago by people who are widely regarded assome of the godfathers of modern hotrodding. I would really like to hear a detailed answer and see some serious posts of your land speed achievements so that you can prove me wrong! Will we see you at Bonneville this year with a potential record breaking vehicle? So, how, I doubt it - for both this year and every other year in the futre as well.
