A truly tragic tale of Roslavets, how those thoughtless drones sought to remove him history and defile his grave. It is a godsend that so much of his music still survives today

Nice job in putting his wild biography together clearly and briefly! Did you read Lobanova's book about him? Also could you give an example of how the synthethic chord system works? Thanks!

I've not read Lobanova's biography firsthand, but the sources I pulled from used it nearly universally. As far as the synthetic chords work, I'm not 100% sure I've got a good grasp on it and I'd be remiss to create a video until I have a full handle on the exact process. It's certainly on the to-do list, though!

I have this book from Lobanova, but she does not have a good explanations about his chord system. She writes more about his life and circumstances. The synthethic chord system is very clear showed in his 3 Compositions (1914). This is quiet the same methode like Schönberg with a difference that the row is not horisontal, but acts vertically and consist of 9-10 tones+transpositions. Roslavets used his system very free, it means that he left it often for free composing. This system was rather a guideline for him

If anyone could elaborate, what exactly is a synthetic chord?
@ClassicalNerd
@ClassicalNerd 3 жыл бұрын
"[T]he whole harmonic plan of the work could be born [from "synthetic chords"]. One can easily build most of the old harmonic system's existent chords out of these "synthetic chords," which contain 6-8 or more tones. Thus they were chosen to play not only the external role of tone color in the entire plan of the composition, but also the internal role of deputies for tonality." For more, see Terry B. Ewell's "Set Operations in the Music of Nikolai Roslavets" [ archive.bridgesmathart.org/2002/bridges2002-17.pdf ]

@@ClassicalNerd you said " the external role of tone color" i see you are quoting your source but what does that mean? - I think the translation is wrong - I don't think it is talking about timbre. Also, what in the hell is the "internal role of deputies for tonality?"
