I remember one of the very first lectures I watched was on Smyslov, and never forgot that he attended Ben's first marriage in London. I love hearing some of the old stories of things that happened way back when, stories are good 😊

When Ben asks his class why he would easily beat Smyslov today, and no one immediately blurts out the frankly obvious answer, I find that very suspicious.

I think this is one of Ben's best. I've probably watched this 6 or 7 times since it originally was posted

What Ben said at 30:35 is undoubtedly true. I can't tell you the number of times I have said, right in the middle of a game with the black pieces, "Ha-ha. Your pawn on d4 is weak and you don't have any attack because we traded off all the pieces." I say it all the time, except for one thing. I've never said it. 😂

- Why would I beat Smyslov today in this position? - Because you'd put on the engine over the weekend? - Correct!

Everybody remembers the Roulette Wheel, but most early Candidates Matches were supposed to be tiebroken by coin flip. That never actually happened, but that was the rule. It's hard to find that mentioned anywhere because it was so ridiculous that they didn't want to talk about it. By 1980, they had something almost equally crazy, which is how Spassky-Portisch II was tiebroken by who won the most with black.

"You've got to beat Botvinnik twice". That's not quite true. Smyslov only had to draw the rematch, not win it.

Yeah, and it’s the same games from when he did the original lecture years ago. Unoriginal, so ppl have to specify what games so they don’t pay for an already free lecture that St. Louis CC has
